This was something brought up in the chat yesterday, which I think is worth investigating. If you have or are working towards a degree, what discipline is it in? All answers will be given to the fine folks at Maxwell and Associates Marketing Solutions to provide better ad quality for this site. jk

I have a Bachelors in Arts in psychology. That means I spent four years at the dog and pony show and have nothing more to market myself other than simply having a four year degree.

I have this piece of paper that says I am good with Computers and, specifically, Computer Science. Strangely, this $80,000 piece of paper has not helped me become employed. This angers me.

I have a degree in Theoretical Physics, so I voted both Mathematics and Physical Science

I have a B.A. in "Music" (which means the academic study of music as one of the humanities, rather than a degree in something practical like performance or education) and am in coursework for a PhD in the same.

I was in school to get a 1600 tons third mates license. But I dropped out, and now I'm trying to get a job with the Washington State Ferries, so I can spend the next 10-15 years working up to Captain. And then some more time after that I could potentially work up to being a Pilot, and make asstons of money guiding container ships into the sound.

True, but I couldn't think of a better category to put them in, and for the sake of the discussion I wanted to see if there were any people who studied mathematics without majoring in physics or CS as well.

...and there were a bunch of redundant categories added the list gg

Hey stat did you structure the poll choices so it would make what looks like a normal distribution (at least the top half) on purpose

Not consciously, no. I wanted it to be ecumenical without having an overbearing number of choices, but still clearly showing the distribution of disciplines. I was really only interested in the answers 2-6, but I didn't want to be accused of being elitist against people without academic degrees. Everything besides those up to liberal arts I wrote down as they popped into my head or I took from Wikipedia. I meant to add professional degrees to the first option and add an other option but I only remembered after I had posted. I put IT with CS because I didn't think there was anyone who had studied it. I knew there would be some people who wouldn't be happy, but appropriate generalization is a rare skill.

Social work is a selfless field, but it's really really difficult. You will see people and especially children in the worst situations, held down only more by the system and you will more or less powerless to help them in any meaningful way. I don't want to discourage you from going down that path, as it is selfless, but it'll break your heart every single day and the pay won't be very much. I've heard it's much better to do social work for a smaller organization rather than the state's Department of Children and Family Services.
