Hmm, I used a program a few years ago after I was forced to reformat without being able to back anything up. Let me see if I can find it again...

What filesysem are you trying to recover from? What media?

PhotoRec on Linux is good for FAT32, EXT3, HFS+. If it's NTFS try GetDataBack NTFS, which can be free if you want it to be...

Whatever the case, don't write to the disk. If it's your boot drive, power off the machine and cable the drive into another, or use a live CD.

Recuva was the best I've ever used, and it doesn't just focus on photos. It's also got a nice UI as opposed to being mainly command line.
