Hmm, I used a program a few years ago after I was forced to reformat without being able to back anything up. Let me see if I can find it again...

What filesysem are you trying to recover from? What media?

PhotoRec on Linux is good for FAT32, EXT3, HFS+. If it's NTFS try GetDataBack NTFS, which can be free if you want it to be... :)

Whatever the case, don't write to the disk. If it's your boot drive, power off the machine and cable the drive into another, or use a live CD.

Recuva was the best I've ever used, and it doesn't just focus on photos. It's also got a nice UI as opposed to being mainly command line.
