Anyone ever try absinthe?
2009-11-19, 11:13 PM #1
I'm very curious about absinthe, but have never gotten the chance to try it. Anyone have any recommendations for brands, types, etc?

Edit: it should be of note that I reside in the US, so the laws might make some varieties illegal for me.
It took a while for you to find me; I was hiding in the lime tree.

If it's green it's not real absinthe.

If the bottle tells you to pour it over a sugar cube or light it on fire, it's not real absinthe.

Not real? I know you can get it either way, but I was under the impression that it was mostly drank verte back in the day.

Yeah "real" absinthe, as in the hallucinogenic kind made with wormwood or some such, is illegal just about everywhere.
Fincham: Where are you going?
Me: I have no idea
Fincham: I meant where are you sitting. This wasn't an existential question.

Listerine green.

I've had it a few times. There was a bar in York that used to keep some under the counter. We'd only let a birthday boy have a single, but that was plenty :)

the fun colored poo that jonc is referring to usually comes from Czech republic. and usually made by adding wormwood and star anise extracts to already distilled liquor.

any respectable absinthe will probably be light yellowish green to an amber color, or sometimes clear.

st. george is an awesome absinthe

it is distilled in small batches in northern California i believe.

or the classic pernod absinthe is usually always a safe bet.

oh! many absinthe brands are now legal again in the US.

It tastes and smells like cat piss. The more it tastes and smells like cat piss, the better it is. If it tastes primarily of licorice or anise, it's fake. It has no psychotropic effects beyond the high alcohol content (up to 90%) and even in Europe costs you an arm and a leg for a bottle. Ignore the hype and legends and drink something worthwhile.

Pernod does not make absinthe anymore.

I've had it a couple of times, at bars in Sweden and in the Czech Republic. Can't be entirely sure about the authenticity of the stuff I had, though. Regardless, like stat says, the reality doesn't live up to the myth. It's just alcohol.

So? I can piss in a bottle of Absolut and sell it online as Absolut Absinth. The Pernod website doesn't call it absinthe, merely Pernod "now with wormwood!"

I, like many people who admire certain literary characters, had to try it. I was going to buy a very expensive bottle online, but my father went out of his way to get me a bottle of Lucid, which many people argue is not traditional. I still enjoy it with sugar cubes, as it's a strong licorice tasting alcohol high.

I'm still interested in trying a Spanish medicine-based Absinthe sans ergo thus ala ie For Whom The Bell Tolls, but I don't really know enough or drink enough to justify importing a $200 bottle of absinthe that might not even be genuine or safe.

I don't like the flavor, but the high alcohol content makes up for it. It's not 'good' but if you're looking to get smashed, its great.

I don't think "sans" means what you think it means. I wouldn't mention it except I spent a few minutes trying to figure out what you meant before I realized you just used the wrong word.

Sorry? I wasn't paying attention. I know that sans means lack of.

A better translation (usually) is "without".

Which is the same thing, sort of :P

Hey, no offense intended, I just got confused so i figured others might also. What word did you mean (I tried to fill in one but I still don't really know the relationship you intended)? Haha.

Anyway, regarding absinthe, I had a friend who studied in Spain a couple years ago, and he brought back some "absinthe" (which if I recall was very bright green) which he claimed was "the real stuff". I never tried it, but I always wondered what the hell he meant.

If you wanna trip just use what's good for that.

I always wanted to the stuff too, for that purpose, then I was like "damn this is a lot of effort" and just bought a bag of shrooms and 6 pack.

Thanks to the efforts of opinions like this, absinthe's reputation has grown immensely in recent years causing a surge in popularity.

illegal (or used to be) + wildly exaggerated rumors that no one bothers to confirm = the legend of absinthe

My buddy here at school is from the Czech Republic and brought some back. It just got me really hammered. Not in a good way either. Ended up making some bad decisions and not even remembering.
2009-11-20, 11:53 AM #25
I remember reading something a while back that said that the majority of hallucinations traditionally associated with Absinthe were as a result of the chemicals they used to use to color absinthe green, not from the alcohol or wormwood.

I've never tried it, but I'd like to.

you're destroying your liver while drinking anyway, but this stuff really destroys some liver- and braincells. Most stuff is good for you when moderated, this stuff isn't good at all. Drink it with some friends and you'll most likely call them the next day with the following question: "what the blip did I do yesterday?"

In short: try it, once!
2009-11-20, 1:31 PM #30
Thanks guys. I know it doesn't actually make you trip, I'm just very curious about it from Hemingway and paintings and the fact that its an odd color.

So cat piss or licorice? That seems to be the general consensus.

I wasn't aware that theres a difference.
nope.

The Cat Piss thing reminds me of a funny story. In my Dendro class (course that teaches you tree identification) we were learning about White Spruce. One of the indentifying characteristics that helps you tell White Spruce apart from other spruces is that it smells like Cat Piss. Upon hearing this, everyone in the lab walks up to the spruce we were looking at outside, smells it, and responds with things like "yeah, that smells gross" and "ewww." Except for me and one other guy- no matter how much we smelled the branches of the tree, it didn't smell bad to us. to us, it smelled like a christmas tree.

Someone who thinks they're smart enough should link to a traditional, least expensive absinthe that US can order.

I've had a liquor called Absinthe before, though I'm not entirely sure it was a "traditional" drink. It was certainly not bright green, nor did it smell like cat piss. A friend of mine imports bottles of the stuff from France annually for our 4th of July party. This beverage is very much a burning licorice flavor on the way down.

I have two small bottles of the 80% stuff in my room... tip: don't have a shot of it. messy.

Oh, and yes it burns. You feel it go all the way down and then you can feel it in your stomach. It's an odd sensation... especially when you feel it come all the way back up again ;)

But that makes no sense. Absinthe isn't a liqueur... It's a spirit as no sugars are added during distillation.

Even the "pinch" Lucid is pretty steep. I guess I ought to find some sort of bar that has it before I spend that much on something that I might not like.

If you've got a metropolitan area near you with lots of kids wearing skinny jeans and stupid sunglasses, chances are there's a hipster bar there that will serve you absinthe in either the "traditional" or "Bohemian" manner.
