Is it worth it to jailbreak an iPhone 3Gs?

Because I'm not quite sure it is.

It would be nice to be able to categorize apps and change the txt message noise to something custom, but most of the reasons that people jailbreak are actually implemented into the iPhone 3Gs so I don;t know.

Any thoughts?

I wouldn't. It already knocks the socks off pretty much every other phone on the planet.

This is very true. I also understand that jailbreaking makes it slower which wouldn't be good
2009-11-22, 2:18 PM #4
Also it CAN allow hackers onto it if you install SSH AND forget to change your root password. But if you did that you'd be stupid :ninja:

Do it. I can't imagine going back to a unbroken phone. It would just be so stale.

That's just not true

And yes, I would jailbreak it. There is almost minimal risk nowadays, it's incredibly easy to reverse, and it allows for a lot of cool functionality. The process is now idiot-proof to the point my dad was able to jailbreak his himself.

What do you actually get from it? You can change the background and set mp3 ringtones?

Are there any apps only for jailbroken phones, ones not gone through the iTunes Store? If so, are any of those apps good?

Pretty much. I jailbroke my iPod touch and I was able to change background and "torrent" apps.
Code to the left of him, code to the right of him, code in front of him compil'd and thundered. Programm'd at with shot and $SHELL. Boldly he typed and well. Into the jaws of C. Into the mouth of PERL. Debug'd the 0x258.

I jailbroke mine, got some extra apps and stuff, it was a fun novelty, never had any problems, but in the end I updated the phone to play new games (gotten the legit way) knowing that it would revert the jailbreak.

There's a lot more apps that are jailbreak only than just theme changers. VLC runs on the iPhone 3GS at pretty much full speed. You've got task managers, lockscreen programs (that tell mail, SMS, calendar, etc), 3GUnrestrictor which lets you use any app over 3G, Scrobbl which does live scrobbling of last.fm, turn by turn GPS with xGPS (free!!!), just to name some ones that I use

Why don't those run on a normal iphone?

Presumably they violate some of Apple's Terms of Service.

Apple absolutely cannot stand anyone modifying their software. Apps in the App store are incredibly sandboxed in that they cannot access lower level system functions. This is fine for security reasons, but a pain in the *** for anyone who would like to do things like theming, etc.

Totally agree. They're over anal about it all.

BUT

It works great as it is for me, so I see no reason to Jailbreak mine. :)

There are NO drawbacks to jailbreaking. It does NOT slow down the phone, I've never heard that one before. It adds functionality, but to be honest I haven't seen many games. The jailbroken apps are mainly focused around functionality and customization. For example, I have PDANet which allows me to tether my iPhone to my laptop as a modem which AT&T does not allow. I also have Lockscreen Info which allows me to put things like weather, calendar, sms, vm, and missed call info on the lockscreen similar to what WinMo can do. It's nice to be able to make the phone do what I want in the way that I want it done. I will never go back to a non-jailbroken iPhone, you just lose way too much.

This thread inspired me to jailbreak my 3G.

I guess it's nice having a videa camera, even though the camera still sucks. Wireless file transfers, iPhone modem, new themes ect.

And if your phone is Jailbroken and you have a warrenty issue, rumour has it even if you un Jailbreak it the guys on the Genuis bar can now see if the software has been changed and if it has no warrenty.

A. I don't see how, especially if you do a full recover of the phone afterwards. There have been rumors that companies "can tell" when you modify stuff for years, but it's never true.
B. That virus stuff only applies if you jailbreak your phone AND install SSH AND leave the root password unchanged.

They could quite easily have a system whereby an unauthorised system change causes a one-way switch to flip irreversibly. It took me all of 2 seconds to think of that, so I imagine that if Apple cares enough they'd have something in place. I think they even have such a switch that flips if the iphone gets wet.

Water is checked via a sticker in most phones. This is all software.

If you can get into the hardware and dump the flash and restore it, including the "one-way switch", it's all over.

And of course there's always hacking the software to prevent that switch from changing, or hacking the hardware for the same effect.

I've been through three iPhones - 2G, 3G, 3G S. All of them have been jailbroken and unlocked. Having had issues that needed to be addressed at the Apple Store, not one employee has ever noticed it was jailbroken. Most the time I restore it before going to the store, but on one occasion I forgot, but they still didn't care/notice.

I say jailbreak it. In my case its a necessity since I run my iPhone on T-Mobile, but SBSettings is also invaluable to me.

Just picked up that program actually. It is super super awesome, definitely worth the 5 bucks

Hell yes. I still have to pay for both that and PDANet. Saving my pennies for Christmas. Try out the Matte UI plugins for Lockscreen Info. Very slick looking and adds the weather icons to it also, which I was having trouble with before.

Yeah I got the weather icons, along with his Twitter one which is in testing.

PDANet is only required for 3.1.x and up right? Because I swear before that you could do a pretty simple hack to enable Tethering

That hack only works on 3.0, so 3.1 and up required jailbreak and either PDANet or MyWi. However, he is working on a version for 3.1.2 according to his site.

I was only pointing out stuff we get told. I know what we can and cat do instore, and if its been Jailbroken we cant touch them. We just get told that if the phone/iPod touch has been Jailbroken and can be proved that it has, and caused (this is very thin) "hardware faults due to misuse of the apple sotware and circumventing the protection the equipment" its out of warrenty, and we get fined as a store, by Apple, of £180 per time. So i kid you not Apple are real pains with warranty stuff.

But then again most Apple retail staff have little or no common sense, you get a few good ones, but most of them of a) Having a Job b) Working with iPods all day c) enjoying the staff discount and the free amount of software you get or d) Enjoy the product and the company and retail, and know what they are talking about.

D option is a rare thing, it really is. Im amazed every time I go in and talk about "solutions" for a Windows switcher with the need of Access, and Outlook PSt files, that they just seem to think Filemaker and Mail for mac will be fine. Enough of the rant anyhow, you get my point hopefuly!
