So yeah, I couldn't get my network settings working at college here because apparantly XP SP2 crippled my "Network Connections" control panel, so it wouldn't run.

My attempt to uninstall SP2 ended oddly when SP2 uninstall apparantly sat around doing nothing when it was supposed to be uninstalling services. I was forced to reboot.

Then surprise! Windows uninstalls my video card drivers and monitor drivers. WHEEFUN.

Luckily, I was able to config my network settings and get the internet. I downloaded my card drivers and installed them, popping on #massassi for a bit and ranting about MS in the process.

The setup for the drivers froze and I had to restart my computer (probably due to the only 99% complete sp2 uninstall). Luckily the drivers seemed to work fine on boot.

However, I could not now connect to the network, getting a "System could not find the file specified" error when trying to "ipconfig /renew" on the LAN connection (whatever the heck that does, ITS has it in their instructions).

An ITS guy told me to leave my comp at ITS, thus now I am waiting for it to come back. Hopefully with all my documents and projects intact.

Oh, and the night before I dropped off my comp at ITS, I decided to defrag my hard drive. I swear to you, not 5 minutes after I started it, I went for a walk and WHAM. The power went out on the whole block for the next hour. -_- Luckily my HD was ok when I booted it up afterwards.

I've been really bored waiting for my comp, but this little internet fix I'm getting at the local computer lab is helping. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif]

So... pity me... or discuss... or something...

Uh, all you had to do was disable the firewall.

When you install SP2, it turns on the Windows firewall. That thing has a tendancy to block everything (making it the most secure firewall ever, I suppose). All you had to do was open the security settings and turn it off.

Wtf? Dude, the firewall has nothing to do with Windows REFUSING TO LAUNCH A CONTROL PANEL.

Note that said control panel works fine now in SP1.

Besides, the firewall was off.

You didn't know what IPCONFIG was?

It's the Win2k/XP equiv of Win98 WINIPCFG, it is a program that lists your IP, and can obtain one if windows didn't do so on boot.

Whoops, sorry, I stated that bit wrong.

I know what IPCONFIG ALONE does, I just don't know exactly what the /release and /renew switches do (or at least what good they do).

Does /renew basically ask the network "Gimme an ip"?

[EDIT: BAH! I'm on the wrong side of the table... stupid sun is in my eyes... I want my own comp baaack :'(. ITS is probably closed now, wtf... I better get my comp back before tomorrow afternoon, I need it for homework!]

Lots of people have problems connecting to the network at our school. .'/

They have a series of steps you gotta do like... set up TCP/IP to use a dynamic ip and dns, yadda yadda yadda...

I got a booklet that had the instructions inside it, it says to go to the website and read it. If we didn't have computer labs on campus w/internet access it would be quite ironic... I don't think they were thinking when they typed the pamphlet [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif]

UPDATE: I am, on the suggestion of ITS, reinstalling Windows. However, likely because my computer manufacturor sucks, the install keeps freezing at Driver installation or Network installation.

'scuse me while I go figure out where their HQ is and buy some plane tickets...

Did you guys install SP2? Because that's still somewhat buggy(read, really buggy).
