HD tv 'halo' effects

I've got a brand new 1080p lcd tv. Sometimes when the picture changed rapidly, I get this 'halo' effect around objects. I've seen it a lot watching television, and I've seen it in Assassin's Creed II.

Anyone know what this is? Is it normal, or is something wrong with my tv or my other equipment?

some lcd controllers increase voltage when there are rapid color changes. it does improve white-black response times but it has visual artifacts similar to an unsharp mask

Yes, that's exactly how I would describe it. I was thinking it looked like jpeg artifacts, but it looks more like an over-done unsharp mask.

I'm going to try the low-energy settings and see if changes anything.

I've seen those on LCDs a lot. I have a plasma at home and it doesn't happen while watching blu rays. However, it does happen when streaming from netflix (even in HD) -- although I think they're compression artifacts in that case.

If you don't like it, take it back and get a plasma ;)
