Why do people still go to see Tim Burton films?
2009-12-06, 11:28 AM #1
Honestly, I'm sitting watching that awful Charlie and the Chocolate Factory film on tv and I'm starting to wonder when was the last time he made a decent film; they're nothing but kooky visuals and thats about it.

I can count about 5 films that are genuinely good - Beetlejuice, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Sleepy Hollow, and the first 2 Batman films.

Anyway, post things that you think have questionable levels of popularity. :P
nope.

I wish he would do an R rated psychotic horror movie. I'd imagine it would be something like playing silent hill.

I though CatCF was pretty good actually. Not amazing, but not sucky.

I do love me some Batman Returns though. My fave Batman film.

Tim Burton didn't direct The Nightmare Before Christmas. But of good Burton films all I can think of is Beetlejuice and Sleepy Hollow - to some extent Big Fish as it was such a different film than he's ever done. His other films either haven't aged well (Batman) or were just bad.

Good point, that's my list down to 4 films. :P

I'm pretty sure he doesn't make films like that for the same reason that Frank Zappa didn't do drugs. People's heads would explode.
nope.

Say what you like, but I loved Sweeny Todd.

The only good thing to come out of the the first two Batman films was the music.

Speaking of which, Danny Elfman is kind of in the same category today too. Not creating anything really memorable (though I did like his score to Milk).

Yeah, I was not a big fan of the Tim Burton Batman films either.

I thought Second Hand Lions (similar story) was executed better.

Um... that main title was created in 1989/90? I said he wasn't making anything memorable today. Hans Zimmer did the music for the motion picture, so Elfman doesn't even factor into that one.

I thought Spider-Man had a pretty good theme, it depends what you mean by 'today'. Nobody is going to be putting out amazing themes endlessly, and a lot of it is going to be down to what the director wants.

I agree with Baconfish here. I don't think Tim Burton has made a worthwhile film other than Beetlejuice and Sleepy Hollow. The rest of them are horrid.

Did anyone see 9?

Yeah, I thought it kind of sucked. Weak plot.

I thought it (9) was pretty good. But it had much, much more potential. Nice, but extremely short, and having sort of "meh" parts in the plot.

I very much liked Sweeney Todd. So is Alice in Wonderland out all ready then?

Tim Burton didn't direct Nightmare or 9. Also, people still see his movies because they are awesome.

Sweeny Todd was phenomenal. One of my favorite films from that year. (Granted the year was not one of the better years for movies.)

CatCF had some great visuals, and while I liked the direction they went with it, they didn't go far enough. I think he was pressured by Warner Brothers to make it more kid-oriented and wasn't able to make the movie he wanted to.

I think he's been given some leeway after his last films have made 3+ times the original investment.

I don't see Tim Burton movies. I don't see "XYZ" movies.

I see movies that look good. Who the hell cares who was involved?

The [89] Batman film is awesome but, due to its success, Burton was given too much freedom with the second one.

I liked:
Peewee's Big Adventure
Beetlejuice
Ed Wood
Edward Scissorhands
Nightmare Before Christmas
Sweeney Todd

I didn't like:
Corpse Bride
CatCF
Big Fish
Planet of the Apes

Ambivalent towards:
Batman 1 + 2
Mars Attacks!

It's sort of hit and miss, but I really like the hits.

I thought 9 was great visually, weak in plot, but he was just a producer for that, so it's hardly relevant as they have little creative control.

Oh, I forgot about Mars Attacks. I loved that too.

I've been thinking about this recently. Most of his movies lack any character development or even a plot. Sweeney Todd was probably the most dissapointed I've been with his movies and kind of when I realized he's not all that great. I loved the soundtrack for the movie but the movie itself was...ugh. I'm tempted to go see Alice in Wonderland, but from the previews it looks like Johnny Depp is taking the lead...again.

I mostly agree with you, but there are some actors/directors that I have found I always end up hating/loving almost everything they're involved with.
But I gotta say Tim Burton isn't one of them. Some of his stuff I like, some I don't, so hearing his name doesn't impact my expectations either way.

Yeah, I like some Tim Burton movies, some I can do without.

David Fincher on the other hand ... well, let's say he can join my ManTrain any time :P

I don't even know whats the last movie of his I saw. I saw 9 because his name was attached and it had a cool visual style. It was really disappointing story wise, but still a cool movie

umm Corpse Bride was an awesome movie... I thought. Nightmare Before Christmas was good too. Otherwise, I'm kinda "meh, whatever" about his films.

The songs detracted significantly from Corpse Bride. More of a Danny Elfman issue I guess.
