Why use Windows 7?
2009-12-07, 4:58 PM #1
I want to build another system, something powerful. I run a business from my PC and usually have buttloads of windows and internet browsers open. I'm familiar with XP and I know many of the little nuances, things I pull my hair out trying to figure out on a Windows 7 machine. Is it really worth sucking it up and re-learning these things? Do I need 7 to take advantage of the latest hardware in making a fast PC, or will a 64 bit version of XP do that just fine? I always drag my feet when it comes to switching away from things that seem to work absolutely perfectly for me, but maybe there's more to it hence the post.

I can't really articulate it but after using 7 (or even Vista) going back and using XP makes me so angry

I wouldn't say it makes me angry in the slightest, but after using 7 for a while it is really easy to see how dated XP is. Personally I prefer it just because it's slicker, though I don't see much of a difference from Vista.
nope.

Because it is awesome.

If, for some ungodly reason, you do want to try XP x64, I have a copy you can have for really, really cheap. Good luck finding drivers for anything, though.
woot!

A- It's not 9 years old.
Seriously.
In more depth- Win7 has great multicore support, DX11, and other stuff relating to newer hardware.
I can't even run XP on my machine without a couple BIOS switches that slow it down, I would assume because XP just doesn't support some of this stuff.

7 is nice. I'm liking it.

Windows 7 isn't THAT big of a departure that you can't figure it out after about 10 minutes of working with it. That said, the improvements in the OS FAR outweigh anything XP has to offer.

I was shocked when I set up a homegroup - by far the easiest networking stuff I have ever done.

Sorry for the meganoob question, but if I install 7 over XP, would I have to re-install all my apps (games, graphic editors, etc)?

No, Only a clean Win7 install is supported from XP

I installed windows 7 over xp... and while my installations didn't carry over... the content of my "program files" "my documents" and "windows" folders were moved to a folder called "windows.old" so i still had access to everything. No need to backup

I've tried all of their stuff on my work system that has XP. They're all hackish, slow and unpolished.

Windows 7 - Just one more step away from JK compatability.

Because, components will force you to pretty much go with a new OS anyway in a couple more years.
obviously you've never been able to harness the power of cleavage...

If your primary concern when it comes to an OS is a 12-year old video game, you need to stop tryinig to live in the past.

That's what multiple PCs are for. The rig I'm on now will be XP-32 until enough parts break to warrant throwing it out. I've got another rig with Ubuntu on it, but I still don't have that machine purposed yet. I haven't decided if my next rig will be Win7 or XP-64, that's more of a back-end functionality issue for me as I don't give a **** about "flashiness" or useless crap like Aero.

Aero, especially with the enchancements in 7, is a huge step forward in usability. Even simple little functions like Aero snap are huge improvements, especially in dual-monitor setups.

You do realize that Aero is one of the greatest benefits of Windows right now, right? It's not just there for looks, it's GPU acceleration across the desktop. Also, with virtualization, there's almost no reason at all to keep an XP system around just to have it available.

Haha, no, usually my primary concern in an OS is "Can I get it for free?"

Also, what's wrong with living in the past... hello? This is MASSASSI... it's what we do.

This topic gives me mix feelings. Part of me says "Use whatever OS makes you happiest." but then the other part that loves hardware says "The OS should be matched to make full use of the hardware."

For example: Hearing about people running XP with a DX11 videocard makes me :(

But JK itself does work fine, It's just the installer that's 16 bit and broken.

Speaking of free OSes, I pulled a bunch of stickers off the school computers.

Well Win2k and NT4.0 don't do online activation/verification so you can use the same valid product key over and over. Pretty pointless to steal anymore of those.

Vista has huge IO prioritization changes that make the system a lot more responsive. IO no longer hogs all the CPU time. Windows 7 has, if I recall, some minor multithreading optimizations most useful on multicore machines.

Sounds like I better use Windows 7 since I plan on focusing on processing power and something just flat out fast for mostly non-gaming multitasking (lots of photoshop windows, lots of web browsers).

I can deal with that I guess. Just have to get used to it.

ViGlance is pretty good. ViStart just got an update which makes it pretty stable as well, although it's missing pinned apps which makes me sad. ViSplore is alpha quality at best, sadly, and it can't replace Explorer so what's the point?

How do you hack the JK install to make it work? (I'm not very comp savy). :saddowns:

Their is a guide and a tool to make it work on newer cards (Here) up on JKhub.

I thought the patch was for video problems for running JK, My problem is that I can't even begin to install JK on a new comp with Win 7.
