Anyone else here pursuing a career in game design?
2004-08-31, 4:59 PM #1
I'm just curious if anyone one else is attempting to get a career in game design like I am. I've been going to college for over two years now and I'm currently trying to complete all my GE courses so I can transfer over to the Arts Institute to pursue a career in "Game Art and Design". It is a 3-year program that will get me a BA degree (Bachelor in Arts). At present, I currently work part-time at a internet game company called BlackAngel Software as the lead modeler. Even though I already have a job in career I'm shooting for, I do not feel that I'm really skilled enough to butt heads with the big shots in the game industry because my skills are kind of outdated.

Ok, enough with me. So, is anyone else going for the same career or something else that is part of the video game industry?

Yeah, I attend the Art Institute of California - San Francisco right now and I'm in my second year for Visual and Game Programming. I tried out Game Art and Design for a little while but it was mostly a lot of drawing and I found out that I enjoyed the programming and computer bits a lot more.

It's something i've considered and am trying to keep as an option, but it's a highly competitive industry without great pay so unless you become someone of great repute times will be tough.

Well, I was originally planning to be a graphic artist, but I decided to become a programmer instead. As much as I like art, I think I made the best choice.

When I entered college to be a Comp Sci major I had all these great visions of game programming in my head. After working with some practical applications of what I'm taught, especially on the solar car team, I think I would much rather work for a company like Boeing or National Instruments etc. designing thier software.

As our CS professor put it: programming is the easy part. Once you learn one language, you know them all. Designing algorithms is what gets you hired and kept on.

If I could land a job with id I would be very, very happy. But I am focusing on animation, 3d things, not so much programing.

I really want to take CS 597C (OpenGL programming). Some of my classmates did some neat stuff in that class.

I'd really like to, but it'd probably end up as a part time hobby alongside a main job of engineering or something.

CompSci major with the school of engineering. If I can't get a job as a game programmer, I can go anywhere from freelance computer builder to tech support (though I hate working with idiots).

Really, that would be pretty much my dream job. But how many 'game designer' positions are there really? I say a finite number, which only open up when some one dies...not unlike history professors.

Like Detric said...I still sort of hold it as a dream...but its a highly competitive industry which for most offers low(er) pay. Plus, I would almost certainly have to move to that blasted California to have a real shot at it. And I would hate living in california eating ramen noodles and being taxed up the butt.

I'm just going to stick with my PC/Network support stuff and keep it as a nice hobby.

You're that young boco!?

Anyway, I think all of us here (Or most of us) are interested in game design. What makes me angry, is that I've had this dream since the day I played sonic the hedgehog, at age 4. I've wanted to do it ever since. Suddenly, it's becomming the 'popular' job to have. A bunch of kids that think it's some million dollar industry where they get to play games all day. The worst part, is it's making the schooling, and job field a bit shifty on ACTUAL game positions and teaching, rather than bandwagon companies, and seminar-like courses.

I don't know how they did it, but MTV (AKA G4 :-P) got ahold of my dream, and shaped it into this pop culture crap, and it's pissing me off.

I already kind of have a career in web/graphic design, but I want to sign on with a company and get a guaranteed wage instead of being a starving freelancer. (I'll keep that going on the side, though.)

I'm currently in my 4th year at University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC), majoring in digital animation and minoring in creative writing. I hope to enter the game industry myself in the art and/or design aspect, but I wonder about my chances... if only I was competant with programming and/or the financial/business/marketing aspects [http://forums.massassi.net/html/frown.gif]

yeeaahhh... gonna go into level design.

i think it would be even easier since in a professional setting, they gives you scetches and themes and such, cause the hardest thing for me, personally, is finding a theme for a level. ill just start out with some structure in the middle and work my way out and just discover what theme would work.

Actually, more than 50% of the workers in the gaming industry plan to leave within the next five years and it's still one of the fastest growing industries in the last 10 years. Not only that, but animators, artists, designers, and programmers can have a starting salary of $50,000.

I'm gonna be a lead game designer in the industry.

I'm also going to make ATM technology available to the public, drastically improving the world's bandwidth.

And I'm gonna be a well-known voice actor.

And the dictatorial sovereign of Switzerland.

So, basically, I aspire to be the World's Greatest.

Until then, I'm happy with my life in the Air Force. Yay troubleshooting communications.

My major is IT Programming and I have an interest in both Game Programming and Design. A friend of mine has been attending UAT in AZ for Game Design and I've been considering it myself. I toured the school recently and liked what I saw.

Yes, I'll be going for a career in Game Design when I get out of High School... in the mean time... I'm level editing and learning some OpenGL programming.
