Note that this is for W3School's data of its visitors, and thus totally not indicative of internet users as a whole. (I suspect Firefox actually garners much less)

I work at an IT call center and you'd be surprised how many people say things like that. Also, people apparently still use the AOL browser.

I must admit that since I started using Safari, I actually prefer it over Firefox. That doesn't mean that I dislike Firefox though. I still use it on the laptop. Chrome is quite nice too.
? :)

Can't stand Safari. Extension support is hell on OS X now with the change to 64-bit, and completely non-existent on Windows.

What the hell is Mozilla? That's vague. Was that suppose to be Mozilla Firebird?
2009-12-15, 10:08 AM #11
I don't really use any extensions but there is one thing that bothers me. You can't alphabetize bookmarks via the bookmark menu. You have to drag the folders in to Finder, alphabetize them & then drag them back in to your bookmarks menu. That's a pretty standard thing that most people do & shame on Apple for not allowing it as far in as version 4.
? :)

Firefox (originally Firebird (originally Phoenix)) was originally a lightweight rebuild of the browser part of the Mozilla Suite. So Mozilla users gradually became Firefox users (which you can see in the graph).

Firefox 1.5 was the ****. It was fast and lightweight and reasonably standards compliant. Now. Firefox's size has increased a lot and it DOES seem slower. If Chrome got the extension support Firefox has. It would be my permanent browser. Chrome's javascript engine is ridculously fast.

It's amazing how AOL just disappears. Though I too know a couple of people who still use it.

AOL stopped including it's own browser. They all switched to IE5.

Actually, I can't really see it in the graph. It's honestly the first time I've ever seen a graph like that and I'm finding it terribly difficult to read...

[Edit]
...I think I get it now, but it seems like it could have been represented better but not sure how at the moment.

It's probably any browser that uses the Gecko (the browser engine) component (mostly Firefox).

Might wanna be careful what you use the IE Tab for, CM said something about it phoning home.

And use my extension too! https://chrome.google.com/extensions/detail/cfkohgkpafhkpdcnfadadcibfboapggi

I used to use Netscape.

Man I miss the days of my dynamic IP DSL service. Disconnect, reconnect, unbanned :downs:

There's a new one, MZZT, called "IE Tab Classic" that apparently sucks less.

Also, adblock on Chrome is far from perfect. It'll often block things it shouldn't with no way to easily fix it (besides disabling for the whole site), it's slow, and doesn't remove things like the firefox extension does. There's like 3 different versions too, and each has its own quirks.

Yeah, I've never seen anything like that either, but it's a really clever way to visualise a lot of data. What's this sort of graph called? Tree-ring graph?

They've managed to take the basic concept of the worst type of graph (pie charts) and turn it into something genuinely useful.

Pie charts are exceptional. Detty's just a useless British computer programmer who doesn't know anything outside of computers.
2009-12-16, 10:34 AM #30
Pie charts are ineffective because judging relative sizes of slices is difficult, they take a lot of space to represent very little data, and if there are more then 6 or 7 slices then it becomes a mess of labels and values and indistinguishable colours. 3D pie charts are even worse.

The only use of pie charts is when you have one thing that is vastly bigger than another thing, and you don't want your audience to care about actual values, just befuddle them with its bigness.

Mozilla used to have a browser suite called just Mozilla. Firefox, original Phoenix, then Firebird, was the replacement for Mozilla.
