Why you don't buy a cheap power supply

So I bought a cheap power supply when I built my computer, and it died on me the other day.

I took it apart and took some pictures (sorry they're a bit blurry)

You can't really see much more than the burn marks on the circuit board, but the capacitor is actually cracked in half. Burned straight through. 'Sploded.

The moral of the story is: don't be dumb like me and buy a cheap PS from a company with the name of DiabloTek.

BTW, the new one is an Antec 480W. So I should be ok. Didn't damage my other components when it blew either.

I once had a crappy power supply which refused to acknowledge any of the buttons on the case. The only way to turn the PC off was to yank the power cord out of the back. Lasted about 2 days with that...

I ran a $20 Powmax 400w for a while..that's with a 7.2k rpm hd, two optical drives, Geforce4, TBSC, NIC, etc..and a P4 1.6 overclocked to 2.133 -- it ran fine. Once a month or so it might shut off, but hey..it usually worked.

I bought an Antec Truepower 430w to fix the low 3.3v rail, and it's been great ever since. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif]
