So I recently befriended a guy, nice guy, fun to talk to and be around.

Until today, when I found out something which he himself told me.

He told me he had never heard of The Beatles or U2 until I mentioned them. What the hell? Doesn't that seem odd to you guys?? I mean who hasn't heard of THE BEATLES? U2 I can kinda understand, I mean with the stuff they put out nowadays, makes me wish I forgot about them too...until I randomly overhear the intro to New Year's Day and my faith is restored. It's kinda like with God, you know? Your prayers aren't answered in a while, you start to have doubts...until you see a nip slip on TV and realize that He must have just taken some time off.

My new friend is from Nigeria (Biafra to be exact, apparently they yearn to regain independence), maybe that explains it. And before anyone cracks an email scam joke, the guy told me the vast majority of Nigerians aren't online, and that he's not associated with any rich prince who wants to flee the country and store his millions on my bank account - temporarily of course.

Is this a joke?
Code to the left of him, code to the right of him, code in front of him compil'd and thundered. Programm'd at with shot and $SHELL. Boldly he typed and well. Into the jaws of C. Into the mouth of PERL. Debug'd the 0x258.

2009-12-27, 12:43 PM #10

seriously though, i know someone who did not know who superman was. some people just don't have the same access to media that the rest of us do.

*dang steven beat me to the joke.

Actually Kroko beat both of you to the joke.
2009-12-28, 2:32 AM #12
no, doesn't seem odd to me.

no, you shouldn't be worried.
2009-12-28, 5:49 AM #13
That's not odd at all considering the fact that he's from Nigeria. I didn't know who Charles Aznavour was before I met my wife. He's one of the most famous French singers as well as one of the most famous singers in the world. She probably thought that I was retarded but the simple fact of the matter is that 99.9% of Americans could care less about France or French culture. Maybe it's the same in Nigeria. I must admit that I had the same reaction as you did with your Nigerian pal when I discovered that half of Massassi had never heard of Shirley Temple.
? :)

Stop sympathizing with my friend, you fools! For he has failed mankind...there is no hope for him in my eyes, for the lack of knowledge on something such as this will mean that he is also ignorant of a number of other facts, such as man's goodwill on his fellow man through liberty and democratic integrity.

Don't close your eyes, my fellow members of our Star Wars related community! See for yourselves the crumbling foundations of our wellbeing, and do your part in aiding its struggle for survival.

It's just weird because you don't even have to know a Beatles song to know who they are. Just turn on the freakin TV and you'll see something about them somewhere.

YES. Or you can turn on the internet, or Xbox Live (though is that available in Nigeria yet? I would think so), or your iPhone...

Some people just aren't into music enough to care. I have a hippie friend who thinks I'm musically challenged, when it's really that I just don't care about music anymore. Ever since the RIAA and the Napster debacle from some time ago, I stopped listening/downloading/buying anything that isn't broadcast right into my car.

And that was the day Kroko discovered the Beatles weren't as big as he thought they were.

Does he know Elvis?

Does he man? That's the real test. I found an Elvis themed diner in Israel once. Really threw me off...

I did mention Elvis to him actually. Guy didn't even flinch. For all he knows, Elvis Presley might as well be working night shift at a Wendy's drive-through to this very day.

:gonk:

The Beatles are one thing, but Elvis?

How about MJ? Regardless of where he is from, the fact that he is living here, in the obviously-superior-in-every-conceivable-way first world and doesn't know who they are, just means he needs to get out a bit more.

I didn't ask about MJ, I agree fully though. But I won't tell him he needs to go out more, since apparently he got plenty of fresh, albeit bullet ridden, air back in his native continent.

Spook, I would consider The Beatles much bigger than Elvis. I don't know if they are number wise, but I guarantee everyone I know could sing a Beatles song line for line, but only a few could do the same for Elvis.

Hey Kroko, ask him if he has heard of Michael Jackson.

"never mind looks like you mentioned that already.

I think it really depends on where you're at, but often, yeah.

Either way, the Beatles could sing all of Elvis' songs.

My brother was in Equatorial Guinea for a while and he witnessed their first rock concert.
Apparently the crowd went wild on Johnny B Goode.
