If you are watching the Republican Convention...
2004-08-30, 5:31 PM #1
...Be sure to keep an eye out for Greg Laurie, who is the pastor of the church I go to called Harvest Christian Fellowship, who will be making a speech tommorrow night. Just thought I'd share that.

NOTE: If you want to start a discussion of the convention, START YOUR OWN THREAD. Don't use mine, thank you. Also, if you're a stinking heathen, (aka not a Christian) don't bother starting a religious debate or straight up christian bashing here either. That would not make my day.

Edit: Go ahead and talk the convention if you want. This thread was originaly supposed to be an announment and nothing more but this is after all a discussion forum so go ahead and talk about it.

I've admired you for a long time Savage, but it makes me rather disappointed to here that, in your opinion, if you're a Christian, you must also be a conservative.

I'd just like to point out, nowhere in the Bible does it say God is a Republican.

Actually, most Christians are conservative. The liberal ideology doesn't suit the teachings of Jesus Christ at all. Not only that, the Republican platform suits Christian beliefs because of issues of Abortian and Homosexuality. I be damn surprised if I met a Christian (non-denomination) that isn't a conservative.

To be fair Trigger - The democrat convention was the same as well.

I sometimes get tired of this formality of clapping after every semi-important statement.

Sometimes, just let the man talk!

I don't really see the conventions doing much voter changing, as lots of the voters who need to be swung just don't have time or the patience to watch 2 five day conventions.

Oh really?

Pretty sure Jesus would be into the New Deal, the Great Society, and other Liberal social reforms aimed at improving the quality of life for the poor. Early Christians were radical liberals and would sell all of their possessions and donate the money to the poor and the church.

I dont think that modern Christianity suits the teachings of Christ at all.

I wouldn't say "at all" but generally speaking, I'd have to agree with you. Christianity has been diluted over the course of the centuries, much of which is due to the 'assimilation of pagans' strategies used by the Catholic church. Despite that, I do however feel that there is a rather large movement of folks who are returning to their "Christian" roots.

Indeed. I grew up in a Christian (Pentecostal) church where they teach of something known as "the world"? What is the world, you ask? Everyone and everything outside of their little community. We were never encouraged to help those in "the world", only those "chosen people". In other words...don't help those starving pagans in Africa, or even California...give us your money so that we may build an even bigger business...err...church. I could go on all day, but that I that my feelings here were relevant to what you stated above.

I also feel that liberal environmentalism is a "Christian" value. Let's also not forget that there ARE liberal Republicans.

I thought the later part of the RNC (McCain and Guliani's speeches) was a total sham, and they should really be ashamed of themselves, particularly Guliani. He constantly recalled September 11th, constantly citing that day when "there were no Democrats and Republicans, just Americans." I totally fail to see how making that statement and following it with "History will see George W. Bush as the best president ever." America may have really united over the course of the days prior to Sept 11th, but America didn't need its president to do so. Its not like Bush came to New York and said "be nice to each other."

But the thing that drives me totally nuts is nowhere does Guliani or McCain talk about DOMESTIC ISSUES. The War on Terrorism only represents a portion of the issues on the upcoming election.

I'd like to see RNC bring up the deficit...

The difference is that Republicans believe it's not the place of the government to behave as the church (that is, funding the poor).

Liberals, I suppose, just want the government to replace the church altogether.

This is where the collision is, and why many Christians are also republicans. They just want the government to butt out.

Not that this really has any bearing on modern politics, where both parties want big government.

I don't think FDR was into lowering taxes while suggesting we begin plans to go to the moon. FDR's reforms were for the good of real Americans, not for vanity.

Plus, the economy is very poor right now.

-----

I don't really agree, oSiRiS. Both parties acknowledge that it is unconstitutional for religion to have any effect on the American government.

The funding of the poor is really independent of Church vs. State. The GOP's idealogy is simply that its a waste to spend tax money on the poor.
