How was your 2009 in music?

Honestly, I feel like my taste in music has just completely eroded. I used to listen to mostly new rock/classic rock and a little bit of metal/pop-metal and occasionally some progressive or vocal trance.

This year, I listened to 10 albums, mostly new rock and hip hop. But the album I got the most enjoyment out of was Lady Gaga - The Fame Monster. I have trouble admitting this in public, as it is widely considered a "mainstream-chick-album", and I've found that I started completely ignoring lyrics and I only listen to the rhythm/beat/melody. I've come to realize that I like almost anything with female lyrics, a dance beat, and pretty much anything I first hear when drunk. I now like pop music, even though I know it's not something I will listen to years on down the line like the other albums in my collection.

What did you like this year? Do I need to turn in my man card because my favorite album this year was Lady Gaga? Is it safe to say that I no longer have any taste in music because I like these lyrically brutal pop songs?

Marcy Playground - Leaving Wonderland... in a Fit of Rage
Regina Spektor - Far
Thrice - Beggars

Of all the new music I have heard, Lady Gaga made the biggest impact.

Never listened to someone who could be the soundtrack to dance parties with not only Marines in Iraq but also weirdos and flaming homos in the US.

I haven't been able to get in to much new music in the past few years. I've been spending more time exploring Bluegrass, Classical, Classic Rock, Black/Death Metal & Electronic music. Also, because of my wife we've been listening to a lot of French music & I must say that much of it is growing on me.
? :)

As far as 'female' musique electronique goes, Imogen Heap, Miss Kittin, Ellen Allien, Robyn and Ladytron had been around for far longer than Lady Gaga. Oh pop culture how you're... pop culture.

I haven't listened to her album in its entirety yet but there were some gems that reminded me of Kraftwerk's Computerwelt boosted up into the 21st century. You actually need to do something right to achieve that.

Röyksopp - Junior was the highlight album of the year for me. Pet Shop Boys' Yes was a partial return to their old school glory so it deserves a mention.

However, I discovered so many old albums this year so that could create its own thread.
Star Wars: TODOA | DXN - Deus Ex: Nihilum

I must confess that "lady gaga" was my first thought, just upon seeing this thread's title

for the comedy option, though

but, no worries, I hardly know her, and I'm cool with people liking her

I like Lady Gaga for one reason: Madonna can finally stop waving her 50 year old crotch in our collective faces.
nope.

Haha yea I actually kind of like Lady Gaga
You can see my top artists for the year here.

Out of those I'd have to say of the new artists/albums I heard this year, these were my favorite:

Metric - Fantasies
Brand New - Daisy
Converge - Axe to Fall
Mastodon - Crack the Skye
Them Crooked Vultures - Self Titled

How about a free Holiday Sampler?
Like the Mars Volta? Check out tracks 2, 8, and my favorite: 14.

Who knows any good blues/jazz?

Like 'the blues brothers' with a little bit of 'Benny Goodman - sing sing sing'

I've been listening to the same old music I've always listened to. The acoustic 'skin and bones' performance of the Foo Fighers, and a lot of hip-hop (outkast - speakerboxxx, old dr. dre stuff, eminem)... little bit of pink floyd too (division bell album, it's awesome)...

I do not think I bought many new albums this year. The only two that come to mind are:
  • Mastodon - Crack the Skye
  • Propagandhi - Supporting Caste

I found both of these albums to be excellent (and it could be Propagandhi's best).

The last couple months have pretty damn killer...

Animal Collective's new EP is exuberant and fantastic, I discovered The Ruby Suns, and Yeasayer's new album Odd Blood leaked in early December.

Man, I'm so lame. I haven't really listened to music since 2007. Other than incidental music on the radio while I drive my 4 minute commute to work, or stuff playing in shopping malls. Never anything on purpose, though.

Music in 09 sucked, and so did any concerts I went to

The Hazards of Love - The Decemberists. Best album I've listened to this year. But I'm biased because they are my favorite band.

Also enjoyed 21st Century Breakdown - Green Day. I listened to parts of Black Clouds & Silver Linings - Dream Theater, but I've given up on them, they've been doing pretty much the same stuff since Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence (which I liked, but didn't want it three more times).

Hmmm... this year I listened to a lot of Tal Wilkenfeld - Transformation. It's a fusiony jazz. It pretty much stayed in my CD player in the Jeep. Listened to some Jaco Pastorius' solo stuff and with Weather Report.

None of that was from 2009, though.

The Rippingtons - Modern Art came out in March. It's the best Ripps album in a long time.

A little Kings of Leon and a little Owl City.

I probably listen to more podcasts than music, though.
"Harriet, sweet Harriet - hard-hearted harbinger of haggis."

I stick with the classical. It has never failed me.
Code to the left of him, code to the right of him, code in front of him compil'd and thundered. Programm'd at with shot and $SHELL. Boldly he typed and well. Into the jaws of C. Into the mouth of PERL. Debug'd the 0x258.
