Calling car experts......sort of....

I dunno anything about this sort of stuff, but... I have a 1994 Cavalier. My problem is that lately I noticed my "Check Guages" Light comes on, which in the past hasn't meant anything relatively serious. However, when the light comes on, my car will studder for a short second, then when the light goes off, it studders again. This continues every 15 minutes or so.

I have a new battery, new clutch, and a new alternator. I suspect it may be the battery, since I've got a pretty booming sound system....However I doubted it would take that much juice.

Any ideas?

Well, anyone got a clue what kinda problem it would be with my car at all?

I just suspected it was my battery because I had the same thing happen before and it was kinda like this. I'm just not really sure since I know practically nothing about cars.

a trip to the nearest car crusher should solve the problem. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif]

Seriously, i have no idea what could be wrong.

Can't say i know enough to know incredibly definite...

How's the oil? Been following the typical maintenance 'guide' (changing the oil every 3,000 miles, etc...)?

And are you sure it's a "Check Guages" light? I can't say I've heard of a "check guages" light, but I don't know much at all about cavaliers, or the service lights, I do know of the check engine light...

It really could be a lot of things... might be bad timing, possibly clogged fuel injectors... might want to check the spark plugs too....

Best thing I can tell you though... take it to a shop and have them look at it... I know a few people with greater knowledge of cars I can ask though.

It's not fairly new oil, but the oil is within the specifications.

I dunno what else it could be, I'll have a look at it tomorrow.

Thanks for the help tho [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

Yeah, I would suspect that your plugs are bad and/or you're having problems with fuel flow.

Does this occur when you're driving? If so, you may have spark plug issues, or possibly bad battery cables. Battery cables are a very common and somewhat overlooked problem.

To be honest, I wouldn't recommend taking it to a mechanic. Use those crooks as a last resort. As knowlegdable freinds, neighbors, or anyone who might know. Most mechanics will charge you $50-$0 just to hook your car up to a computer and see what's wrong. Often, the computer can't find anything, so they charge $70-$100 to open it up and look. Only go to a mechanic if you can't find someone else who can help (unless you have a reliable, trusted, honest mechanic who does this sort of thing for free).

Just put some black electrical tape over the light. That should fix it.

Isn't the battery only used to start the car? I thought the alternator took over everything electrical once the car was running.

Try disconnecting your system's power for a day and driving around the entire day. It may be that you bought a battery with not enough juice, and your alternater is having a hard time keeping up.

Thanks for the ideas guys. I think I finally found out what it is.. My temperature gauge keeps going to high levels when the Check Guages light comes on, so it might just be a lack of coolant..Gonna fill it up and see how that changes things.
2004-09-02, 10:59 AM #15
My car does that. It means you need to refill the radiator with coolant(water). Something has gone wrong with my radiator and it will slowly leak out the water so I have to refill it every once and awhile and carry extra water with just incase i overheat. You will probably want to carry a little water with you just in case as well.

Make sure when you refill the thing with water(or whatever you use)that you let the water cycle through the radiator. Otherwise you might not be filling it all the way.

Hope that helps...
