What the hell, my school sucks!
2004-08-31, 6:35 PM #1
I have about had it with my stupid school district. They are the most strict bastards I have ever heard of. I am tired of their stupid rules that are litterally pointless and just there to make our lives miserable. Today, my favorite site of all time, has been blocked at school, http://www.massassi.net I sware I must be the only one for sure that accesses this site in the Plano, Texas school district. When I tried to load up Massassi, it gave me a message saying "This website has been blocked due to: Games." I was like WTF! I can understand them blocking game websites, and I understand pornography, but you do NOT block my Massassi. AHHHHH!!!!!!

Please comfort me [http://forums.massassi.net/html/frown.gif]

I don't really see a problem with your school blocking massassi. You can do that on your own time, you know?

There are usually really simple ways around those blocks. You can quite often get to the forums using the forum address even if the main site is blocked (depending on the software being used). Anyway, you're in the clear it seems.

/me laughs.

I had to put up with garbage like that last year. And I'm not just refering to Massassi. The system litterally blocked so many sites the internet wasn't worth using. They blocked EVERYTHING. If it got too many hits it was blocked. It didn't matter if it was educational. They blocked CNN.com for the love of God.

Our solution?

http://nosensor.citizenlab.org/#4.5

Try a link. If it doesn't work, try another.

See, I don't have a problem with them blocking web sites. That's all well and good. What gets me, is they block things that shouldn't be blocked at all. Massassi is up there. Is there any reason to block it? This site would rank near the bottom of any list I came up with of sites to block. It's harmless. They don't look at what they're blocking and censoring, they just do it.

My old school was always behind on their block list because I think they had to do it manually. When they blocked the site everyone was going to, we all just found another one. They also didn't even account for the Google Cache. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

My old high school had similar blocks in place. Doing research on certain subjects, say baseball for instance, was nearly impossible. Many baseball sites mention Babe Ruth, but because of the word "babe", they were blocked.

One of the librarians (namely, the one with a particular hatred of students) used to spend a great deal of her time slowly circling around the bank of computers in the middle of the library, carefully studying the computer monitors and asking each student exactly what kind of site they were looking at. One day I was browsing through the editing board of this site, and literally got yelled at: "NO FORUMS!!".

Naturally, nearly every imaginable free email site was blocked, too. Back then I had Massassi mail, but since nobody in the school district had ever heard of it (and thus couldn't block it), I was still able to check it through the library computers.

In my high school, we werent allowed to type anything on the computers that were for internet research, except to enter a url in the address bar. Yeah, the rule didnt make that much sense... but in a few years, you'll look back and wonder why you were making such a big deal about this. School is for education, if you have free time, go read a book or play a sport outside. When you look back on the time you spent in school, do you really want to remember it as being time spent in front of a computer?

I've never been stopped from doing anything on the computers, and I really don't know THAT much about getting around security. I've always simply disabled the security in one of the simple ways you disable any other program.

But then again, I only do these things when it prevents me from doing something education related. I see no reason to need to read massassi at school.

At my school, they don't let you on any sites for non-school related stuff... that includes email, unless you're sending research info to yourself. BUT we don't have any filters or anything; if I wanted, I could go anywhere. And actually, they're kinda slack with the non-school part; as long as it's not porn or an all-out gaming site (like battle.net), they'll let you on.

The 4 minutes between classes at my school isn't enough to do anything. I can't go to the bathroom and my locker without running to my next class all the way downstairs. WE NEED MORE TIME DANGIT!

The moral, there's something wrong with EVERY frigging school.

Palm Beach County has a firewall that blocks it too. It would be funny if it was the same firewall page. The firewall list got cleared once, and then massassi was unbanned, but then they added sites and it was banned once more. Wierd thing is that other community game sites are unblocked. I used a proxy site to get to massassi and it worked fine and everything except today the proxy was blocked, so was the one I used last year. They do watch what you do, but apparantly they care more about the proxy than blocking all the other game sites I've been on. They also block translators, cause they are somewhat of a proxy.

66.208.97.18 is the IP for massassi.net, but Massassi does not have a dedicated ip so it does not work.

However, if you get a blocked site to work by IP, but the IP is blocked too... here's a trick you can use with windows.

Convert the IP to a 32-bit integer and enter it in the url bar in any browser. Windows will treat the 32-bit integer as an IP address.

Here is how you do the conversion:

Open calc.exe and switch to scientific mode.

For each of the four parts of the ip, convert it to hexidecimal.

66 -> 42
208 -> D0
97 -> 61
18 -> 12

Put 'em all together to make your 32-bit integer in hexidecimal, and convert back to decimal:

42D06112 -> 1120952594

Add your http tags and you're done! http://1120952594/

Note it goes to the same error page as the ip. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif]

Oh, and it doesn't seem to work behind the squid proxy (just tried it now). Dumb proxy. -_-

If you need a site to try it out on, try google.com. You can get the ip of a site by doing a WHOIS lookup, or by pinging it with ping.exe, which will resolve the domain name automatically. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif]

Free time?
Heh, in Cherry Hill, New Jersey (US), they passed a law that says that for summer reading assignments must NOT require the student to read more than one book because otherwise it takes up too much free time.

At least *someone* has *some* common sense. Of course, by the time it spreads down to where I live, it'll be too late. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/frown.gif]

Use the site I provided. It's a freaking list of about 30 or 40, maybe 50 different proxies. Last year, they'd block one of the proxies on that list, and we'd find another that same day. For some reason, they never blocked the site itself. That thing is updated all the time with new ones too.

So, unless your IT security people are smarter than ours were last year, that site should last you a long, long time.
