Nice! I've always wanted to try mead, but it just seems so pricey.

Dude, that looks SWEET.

I love mead. It's really hard to come by. I've bought it at festivals and things like 'Medieval markets'.

I can find it down my local off-licence. :/
nope.

Mead is hard to find, expensive, and usually cloyingly sweet when purchased at a store (from what I've heard), which is why I decided to make it myself.

There's actually plenty more than what's in that picture. I still need to make labels for some of it, and some still needs to be bottled.

Have any other Massassians dabbled in home-brewing?

Looks nice. My boyfriend home brews, which means I too home brew. He does mostly meads as well and I have to say it is better than the mead I've had from a store. It's strange that everyone is saying it's hard to find though...I've never had trouble finding it here.

I've made ginger ale. I'm currently collecting glass bottles and getting ready to make root beer and some other traditional soda recipes.

Started brewing beer about 9 months ago or so. I have 5 gallons of an IPA in secondary right now.

Absolutely! My friends and I actually have a little club we meet up monthy to brew homebrew beers. A lot of fun, and considering we get about five gallons out of each brew, it ends up being a lot less expensive and often better tasting than the beer we would typically buy (a lot of craft beers at that).

Those of you who brew beer, do you have any recommendations on starting equipment? Specifically, is something like this likely to be sufficient? Or in the alternative, is it too much?

This thought actually crossed my mind when I wrote the subject. >_>

How do you make these? I assume they aren't at all like store-bought soft drinks, or like the ginger ale from the Merchant Alehouse (which is beer flavoured with ginger)

That actually looks like a pretty good set of equipment, right there. I imagine you could do without some of those items, but if you have them, it's all the more convenient. Also, it doesn't come with a corker, which you would probably want if you were going to make wine.
Another piece of equipment I have that is useful for mead, and would also be quite useful for beer, is a coiled copper pipe. Cold water is run through one end, and it absorbs heat through the copper before coming out the other end. This cools the must/wort very quickly, but it isn't necessary.

American style, Belgian, or Bavarian? I find American wheat beer insipid. Bavarian is delicious.

Ahhah! I've been meaning to make some mead. I just have to get some honey and maybe some raisins. I've got a fast-acting, high alcoholic content, neutral-flavored champagne yeast that should work pretty well for mead. I'm just going to use a simple recipe, something with honey, raisins, orange peel and maybe a little clove or something.

Any advice?

Damn it.. I'm literally watching LOST for the first time right now.. and here it is, on Massassi, following me. Only just started season 3, and the show infuriates me.

That kit is pretty nice, but I would also invest in a steel brew pot and a burner (typically propane).

This book is an excellent source of information. Amazon has a few pages available to preview also.

Soda making is a very fast process. You basically make a large tea, and use yeast to carbonate. Takes about 24-48 hours. There is the risk of exploding bottles if you don't keep them cold to reduce yeast activity.

Be very patient. Once you've got it all bottled and ready to age, you'll be tempted to start drinking it immediately. Let it age!

Also, you might want to make your first batch a small one, if you aren't confident that it will turn out good. That way, if it doesn't turn out good, it won't be as much of a waste.

That's pretty much what I thought. Does it taste fermented at all? Unlike store-bought root beer and ginger ale, it would have a small alcohol content (though not enough to make you drunk).

I'd eventually like to start brewing my own beer. I think it'd be interesting. Plus possibly better and cheaper than buying.
