Pommy's Poll #59: Massassi Intelligence
2010-01-07, 10:20 PM #1
**EDIT: The poll question is w/ regards to the general population of Massassi, not ALL Massassians; that is, if you choose "more intelligent," it means you think you are smarter than MOST Massassians (but not necessarily all). Similarly, if you choose "less intelligent," it does not mean you think that you are the LEAST intelligent person on Massassi, but rather less intelligent than MOST other Massassians.**

PLEASE BE HONEST.

In this discussion thread, rather than talk about how smart or not smart you are, discuss the current results of the poll (as they develop).

(If you are uncomfortable about your answer you should vote but hold off on making a post until there are more than a few votes so that it is more difficult to associate a vote w/ your post; i.e. if there is only one vote and one reply people might think that vote belongs to the poster of the only reply).

And admins please don't use admin poll powers to find out who voted for what and hold it against him/her in the future :P

About the same. But when it comes to wisdom and worldly experience, I'm beat, seeing as I'm 19 and most Massassians are older than me and have steady jobs.

Except for poley, who works at ****ing ATLAS. He beats me by far. :saddowns:

I feel around average. I also feel, like zell, that yes the older guys are much wiser.
2010-01-07, 11:01 PM #4
I voted equally. I enjoy reading the lengthy debates, and I often feel like I would have no problem jumping in the fray and arguing on about the same level as everybody else, but I rarely actually do because I don't really feel like spending lots of time pulling facts or whatever.

I think there's a fairly wide range here. I'm not exactly sure where to place myself, but probably somewhere in the middle.

I think I'm fairly smart, but there are a few people around here who trump me hands down as far as intelligence goes. I'm looking at you Emon and Jon`C.

The results of the poll so far are pretty much what I would have expected...I very much doubt very many people, even honest people, will think themselves less intelligent than MOST others.

Well, I don't want to brag, but I *did* solve a sudoku in less than 1 minute once :p

That's because you're not as smart as Martyn. :v:

How do you rate intelligence? Half of our users are paid to be physicists and stuff. I suppose I answered my own question: no, I feel dumb here.

Intelligence is a little too context sensitive to be measured by this metric. e.g. I wouldn't trust myself to design a bridge or building, but I would trust Martyn. However, I wouldn't trust Martyn to tell me about signal transduction or substrate metabolism.

So which one of us is more intelligent?

Obviously me. How hard can it be to build something that wont fall down.

We have a few people here who I think are probably a bit more intelligent than the rest of us but I suspect they'll be hesitant to vote that way (not saying they won't) because they probably don't want to be thought of as arrogant.

I must admit that I believe the average level of intelligent at Massassi is far greater than the average intelligence of the citizens of my own country (the U.S.).
? :)

I would say that those things are more dependent on knowledge, skills, and ability/talent than on intelligence.

In any case, this poll isn't meant to measure intelligence, but rather perceived intelligence, so any vote is legitimate regardless of how you define intelligence and whatever caveats you assign to it / its metrics, as that is a part of what forms your perception.

This is also as much a social experiment (e.g. will people vote themselves as above-average, or will they, as Mentat say, not do so despite the poll being anonymous? Will people out of modesty or whatever other reason under-vote themselves? Will the answers hint at the Dunning-Kruger effect? and so on)

I think you'd need more percentiles to get a Dunning-Kruger effect (I may be wrong), but also it's a well documented phenomenon within these 4 walls, so that'll skew it as well.

But really, I reckons I'm par for the course here.

No, because you're asking for a relative measurement in a situation where there is no measure for relative competence.

I voted that I'm smarter than the other posters (on average) because I have a low opinion of the other posters (on average,) not because I have a high opinion of myself (on average.)
2010-01-08, 11:15 AM #22
I'm a proponent of multiple intelligences but on most intelligences I believe I fall along the mean. There might be some things I grasp easier than others here and some things that others here are much better with.

[Annendum]
Intelligence is a concept most people take for granted but there is no all-encompassing definition or measurement.

The only person I can think of here that should consider himself smarter than the rest of us, works at the LHC I believe.... wasn't it you Pommy? I can't keep track of internet associations that well lol.

Voted higher just so Joncy wouldn't be alone.
2010-01-08, 11:54 AM #25
I didn't seriously vote because I don't think it's feasible for me to compare my intelligence (with a focus on arts/humanities) to the average Massassian intelligence (with a tendency towards the sciences). I feel I'd be comparing an orange to a basket of apples, and I'm not one to think the arts are more or less important than the sciences.

I did, however, vote lower just because I tend to place myself lower in general.

I consider everyone to be part of my collective intelligence, because we have the ability to communicate and share ideas; therefore we're *all* smarter than the average person.

I am the smartest person here.

I have solved P=NP, the Riemann Hypothesis, invented warp travel, and figured out the female psyche.

THE PAINFULLY SINGLE HUMAN MALE IS NOT SPEAKING THE TRUTH

Beside that, it's hard to determing intelligence on internet. To look more intelligent on internet, one simply needs wikipedia and some free time. Though I suppose going through all that effort does require one to be either a) fairly clever or b) utterly worthless and unproductive, but those two options don't really help clear the matter up so I just wasted time being worthless and unproductive.

I think I'm on the same level...

Yes, I'm younger than most members, so on life-experience I can still learn a lot. I do not speak or write English as my first language, so I'll probably lose on that level too. But I honestly believe I'm on the same level of 'scientific knowledge and understanding' and problem-solving as the rest of the massassi members. Most people here are a lot older, mature and are on the 2 * sigma edges of the internet-stupidity bell-curve.

I hope the results of this poll correlate with the 'everybody thinks he's better than he is' hypothesis (can't seem to remember the name). Just so we can prove nerds are normal people too!

Match isn't going so well this year, unfortunately. I might have to either scramble or do some additional research. I applied to neurosurgery this year, if I have to do it again I'll probably apply again to general and radiology, depending on other factors.

9 of you are egotists, and 3 of you need more self respect.
2010-01-09, 3:28 PM #39
There's nothing wrong with believing you're more intelligent than others. If you have high IQ scores, do well in school, have some kind of career in math or science, you're statistically likely to be smarter than average. And that's to say nothing of other types of intelligence, such as artistic intelligence.

The problem is that thinking your intelligence makes you better than other people.

I voted "more intelligent" because Wookie06 says I'm a member of the "Massassi intellectual elite."
