Help us playtest MP levels!
2010-01-09, 3:51 PM #1
The judges and I are unable to find a time when we can all play through these levels and form a real opinion on them.

This is where you come in, Any Massassian with JK, MOTS, and/or JA is welcome to help.

There are rules however:
1: None of the level devs are eligable to play, this includes SP level devs.
2: For the purposes of this it's just a game, no mentioning the contest or reviewing levels on the fly.
3: This doesn't make you a judge, you're just needed to help us formulate our opinions. This means you can't try to sway our votes and we will not share them with you.

Please post here if interested, and we can set up a time.

Well I can't really rate the MP levels if I can't play them with multiple players!

Even without being able to play them you can look for the following by yourself, it's what I did:
- Visuals (archi, textures)
- Weapon placement (are the more powerful weapons harder to get or out of the way? Ammo/health/shields in good quantities? Too many powerful powerups?)
- Level flow (The more rooms with dead ends or only two ways in and out, the worse the level flows. Dead ends can be good in some cases however, like for storing a powerful pickup so someone is more likely to run into you to kill you, making it a bigger risk.)
- Anything interesting or innovative that you haven't seen before in MP

If we can playtest that would be great, but I also think all the judges should look for some of this stuff in the MP levels too while forming their opinions. Of course despite breaking all of these rules TF2's ctf_hallofdeath manages to be fun I guess... so whatever.

Keep it in the X-Files thread.

Looks like an Asgard to me.
Seriously, look- Just because something is an irrational fear doesn't mean I **** my pants at the thought or sight of it.
If anything, this is helping to desensitize me.

I don't see what this will achieve. If you play with guys who whore the conc, time vests and whoop your arse then you will rate the level poorly. Rather than trying to use a tiny sampling, being a couple of games against complete randoms to try to judge the MP characteristics of a level, why not just use MAZZTer's criteria?

Yeah I was thinking about that too GHORG, the experience largely depends on who you play against. Jedi High School is a testament to show that even poor levels can be well liked in MP.

Still an MP playtest can bring out problems or show quality in weapon placement and level flow that you might miss otherwise.

You can objectively rate an MP level's design on your own. But you won't know how fun it really is until you play it.

That being said, there were two MP levels both by competent authors so I'm pretty sure you don't have a difficult decision to make.

Volunteering to be a judge was probably not a great idea if you don't have time to play, tibby. Just saying.

He didn't say anything about not having time to play...
