Any sword owners?
2010-01-09, 8:54 PM #1
My latest kick is that I want to buy a sword. A Roman Gladius, to be more precise. Not an original of course, but something legit and "battle ready" as they say, like this....

http://www.darksword-armory.com/1323.html

I don't know why I want it. I just think it would be a cool thing to have kicking around the house to show off, perhaps on display on a shelf, possible home defense should the need arise, or whatever. (Hey, mom has a baseball bat by her bed just in case, so why not a sword???) Maybe even start a small weapon collection.

Anybody have something similar?

They use good steel. I've never heard of that smith, but they provide good info. 1060 is a high carbon steel. It has good hardness (will hold an edge for a while, but will be difficult to sharpen) and good toughness (won't break it you hit something solid, but DO NOT use it to pry). It's not stainless, though, so don't let it get wet, and oil it with steel oil regularly.

Sword for home defense? I refer you to Tibby's screenshot. Didn't do that guy much good, did it? For home defense a gun might be more appropriate.

If you really want a sword, I suggest you save your money and go to a local Renaissance Fair and buy one there. Support your local bladesmith, you'd be surprised how many there are. Plus, you can ask him questions, get it sharp (no one ships sharpened swords unless you want to pay a lot extra), and hold it to check the size and weight.

If your goal is to dissuade guests from ever returning to your house, display a sword.

This. And if your Faire is anything like the one here, there are literally at least five smiths there at any given day. They have demonstrations showing the process of smithing the blades. And a couple of the guys who display works here are real artisans. Fancy rapiers and the like that are really gorgeous pieces of work.

I love watching the smiths work. I've got a friend in Germany who does some smithing on the side, and the joke is that us and some other friends will all move to Canada and just make swords and stuff all day.

I don't have any swords of my own yet, but I have some nice knives.

Why does everyone buy swords when they go to Spain? Is Spain filled with sword shops or something?

I rather like Roman swords like that myself (though I prefer the sparta myself). Never been much of a fan of the traditional cross-guard European style in any case, even if such a guard offers more protection. If anything European, I probably would lean towards something like a viking sword.

I feel if I were to ever get a sword, I'd want to save an absurd amount of money and get something super-custom made that I know only I would own and would be built for me.

And make sure that it happens to slip and stab the maker, thus the secrets behind its construction are only known by you. Also, have it infused with the souls of a thousand orphans, and encrusted with jewels made from the sacrificing of a thousand woodland creatures. And made from the steel from a long-lost civilization. Call it Timmy.

Most tourist cities in Europe have sword shops, unless they're London. :P
nope.
2010-01-10, 1:01 PM #21
The laws against weapons and arms have left London's smiths without business, so they've resorted to converting their smithies into fish and chips restaurants.

Not sure, but I have heard that Spain has some *really* good blacksmiths.

I just inherited a Union cavalry officer's sword from the civil war from my grandfather. It's pretty dope, surprisingly long, authentic, and probably worth a pretty penny. My current objectives are to clean it up and find a way to display it at my house. I just left home to go back to school, but I should be back home in a week or so if this thread is still around (or needing to be necro-ed).

In his will he also left me a US Army tomahawk from when somewhere in that time period when skirmishes with the natives were more common. And his bayonet from WW2.
It took a while for you to find me; I was hiding in the lime tree.

when cleaning an old sword make sure not to overclean it or you'll ruin the value

Yeah, I'd say don't clean em at all or even do anything to them, you'll ruin them.

Not always the case my friend.

I have two katanas that I keep on display in my home from when I studied kenjutsu and iaido for several years. They make excellent conversation pieces.

Yea. I was definitely going to do my research and ask about how to do it and what kind of stuff you can use on it that would be safe for the metal. :hist101:

Olive oil.

If it's already got spots, don't try and scrub them off. Keep it well oiled so they don't spread.

Never touch the blade, and then stick it back in the sheath without cleaning and oiling it. My ******* brother took one of my swords out. I found out a month later when I took it down to oil it. His fingerprints are still on it as rust spots.

Perhaps, but because of the level of stupid japanophiles wanking about anime and crap, the real culture of Japan has gotten dragged down to the point where if I saw someone with a Katana I would instantly think "Oh god he's going to go on about how it was in an episode of bleach and how Japan is so much better then us.".
2010-01-10, 8:23 PM #34
Or maybe you just think Katana swords are cool.

The Katana is one of the most useful swords during a zombie apocalypse. A machette also works well.

If they are bad, refinishing it surely is a better alternative?

Not when it's a genuine Civil War Officer's sword.... It's more valuable as a stick of rust than refinished. Same with any antique or collectible blade/gun/whatever as far as I know..

True but I don't have plastic display action figures on the shelf below them. =P

Oh, sure that makes sense.

What about electrolytic rust removal? It's like reverse electroplating. It takes the rust off without changing the finish of the surface, i.e. pitting will still be there. I wonder if that's acceptable for antiques. Certainly it could get so rusted that removing the rest removes a significant amount of material, though.

Don't bother. A civil war era officers sword isn't worth all that much. Some of the modern replicas are better made, and cost more. The originals are plentiful enough that to be worth good money, they need to be absolutely perfect.
