I got one of these as a gift from my grandma at Christmas. I turned it on and it seems pretty cool, couldn't get it connected to my wireless network but, for someone like me who hasn't touched a hand held since the Gameboy color. What kind of cool games or apps should I get? What does this thing do anyway?

ScummVM has been ported to the DS, also DOSbox and other emulators

My personal favorites have been Final Fantasy Tactics A2, Trauma Center, Animal Crossing, Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow (heard order of E was better, don't bother with PR), and the Phoenix Wright series.

If you want to run homebrew, get an Acekard2i. I have one, and it works marvelously once you put the right firmware on it.

Yea, too bad you got the DSi, makes the whole homebrew thing more difficult (but not impossible). Plus the lack of a GBA slot and less battery life.

But at least it was a gift, so that's good :P

Both Zeldas, New Super Mario Bros.

From the homebrew standpoint, as I understand it, the DSi sucks. If you simply are interested in great games for the DS then check out Ninja Gaiden and GTA. Even if you've never been into the mainstream titles of those franchises the games are still very entertaining (and highly rated in reviews).

Scribblenauts is my favorite for that handheld. Spirit Tracks is pretty good so far as well.

See, I'm glad I got the DSi. The shop doesn't have much but it's better than no shop, the camera's are as bad as the camera on the iPhone but it adds a little something extra to the games. I don't own any GBA games and don't see myself buying them. Nothing seems difficult about running Acekard2i.

Actually, the cameras are worse than the iPhone's. And the GBA slot is killer because, really, there are a ridiculous amount of good GBA games (more than there are DS games easily).

The cameras are much worse than the iphone's, the iphone's one is actually pretty good

Who cares, buy a camera. My D90 is better than your iPhone.

YOSHI'S ISLAND DS

Seriously. Tons of fun and challenging to beat.

Well of course it doesn't stand up to an proper camera.
But as far as phone cameras go it kicks ***.

And your D90 is not in your pocket all the time.

Cameras on phones like the iPhone (and Pre, and Droid) have rather good picture taking abilities. No, it will not measure up to a DSLR, but it takes usable pictures. They're not grainy hell (in decent lighting), and they're even able to go up to sizes usable for printing.

Example of good photo taking from an iPhone >.>

I have an iPhone, and really it is not very good at all compared to other phone camera's. My 4-5 year old Sprint Samsung 920 camera blows the iPhone out of the water. I carry both phones with me at all times, and if I ever want to snap a shot or video, I use the samsung. I'm not a photographer, I don't aspire to be one, you wont ever see my carrying a DSLR or digital camera. Also, you will never see me carry around the DS to take photos. Its cool because I can take photos on certain games, and what have you, that is all.

Another problem I have with taking a photo on the iPhone is, my hand isn't very steady.

Is your iPhone a 3GS or an older type? The older ones did have rather bad cameras (still better than the DSi's pathetic 0.3 megapixel), but the 3GS is pretty darn good.
2010-01-12, 1:57 PM #21
Older 3G :(

2010-01-12, 1:59 PM #22
Yeah, the 3GS was stepped up to a 3 megapixel, from a 2 megapixel, and seems to have much better software under it as well.
2010-01-12, 2:00 PM #23
Oh yeah, it's significantly faster (so when you try to take a picture, there's a much better chance that what you were looking at didn't move and cause your picture to become a blurry mess), and the autofocus makes a big difference as well.

ah, well then my argument is almost invalid
