Does anyone still use them?

Friend of mine has one for use with her laptops (yes, plural) and after using one from time to time I have to say it is much preferable to a touch pad

I had a thumb style trackball years ago and I liked it quite a lot. Worked pretty well in RTS games. The finger style ones look clumsy though.

Oh, I guess you would call the one I use... palm style? It almost looks like an upside down mouse.

This is what I mean by thumb style:

And finger style:

Yeah, those. I've never tried them for an extended period of time, but I never liked the idea. The thumb is the most dexterous finger, so it makes sense to let it control movement.

Hmm, that's a good point, if I ever find myself owning a laptop that's actually portable (long story) then I'll have to give them a look-in

I know of two people who swear by them.

They must be losing out to keyboard shortcuts though.

I love my trackball. I can't ever see myself using a mouse in the future unless it's forced on me (such as our Uni library). The one below is what I use, with my index and middle finger controlling the ball. The idea of using my thumb for that is a little weird to me, but I guess I've just grown so used to this style since I've used the same trackball for years.

I own 5 of these. I use them everywhere.

I've only really used Trackballs once or twice and I really didn't like them, but it's probably just a matter of what I'm used to.
nope.

I think I game better with a mouse, but I do have a Logitech Marble Mouse (trackball) which I use at my 'tech station'.

Definitley this. I love thumbstyle trackballs with RTS games. My friend who plays Supreme Commander/C&C/Company of Heroes absolutely swears by them. It was also nice to be able to stick it on the arm of his nice chair and relax while playin'

Never used one before. Never even seen one in person.

I really love the nipple mouse on my thinkpad. Does that count?
Can't stand touchpads. I use them only for scrolling.

My laptop is nippleless

I've only had small experience with the nipple mouse, found it pretty annoying myself, still better than a touch pad though.

Anyone wonder if there was a specific reason for Pommy starting this thread?

This is what I've used for about five years or so. I love it to death, but no one else can use it.
