I used JKUP myself for Magrucko.

Yeah. I was looking for another switch but couldn't find one.

Heh, I just played through Goit's entry and YOU'RE NO MATCH FOR ME, HATBOY. NERFHERDER. WHAT'S WITH THAT HAT? YOU'RE NO MATCH FOR ME, HATBOY. NERFHERDER. WHAT'S WITH THAT HAT? YOU'RE NO MATCH FOR ME, HATBOY.

And also I couldn't take any of the voices I did seriously. :psyduck:
Hey, Blue? I'm loving the things you do. From the very first time, the fight you fight for will always be mine.

I'll have to wait until I can get to my JK cds so I can do the patch (doesn't work on the steam version) so I can actually play the final version.

Gods sake im sick of hearing this.
Just pirate the ****ing thing, it's not a mortal sin to pirate a 13 year old game.

bad, imsoshort, bad

I agree Tibbs, after 13 years, nothing still has value. I frequent Barnes and Noble and check copyright dates on books. Over 10 years = stuffed in my jacket and out the door. :D

Difference here= Books remain in print.
He already bought it through steam, there is no logical reason why he can't just find an ISO.

So once a book is only available digitally you can steal it from the library? Awesome!

Or another fun analogy, if I buy a book online, it means I can steal the book store's copy as well!
2010-01-13, 5:52 PM #52
Er, that doesn't work, CM. In both those analogies the books disappear from the library or store.

Downloading an ISO for a game you already own is copyright infringement but it is nowhere near stealing.

If you were to buy a game, make a backup ISO of it, lose the disc then later find the backup ISO, would you be stealing the game?

I think their line or reasoning is, if you buy and book and then YOU lose it, is the bookstore responsible for replacing the book YOU lost for free?

I'm just playing Devil's Advocate.

It works just fine if you ignore this stupid triviality that we've already discussed and debated and argued to death here a billion times. For all intents and purposes when people say stealing online it is an all inclusive word combining even copyright infringement.

Yes, but, aren't you legally allowed to make private copies of your own software, just as you'd be legally allowed to photocopy an entire book for private use?

Even if that is true, I didn't make a backup copy of my own disc.

Essentially, I lost my book, and then had a friend photocopy his entire book and give me the copy.

Wrong, I never said that.
If you buy a game that doesn't have the same functionality as others who have bought the same game (I'm not talking collectors edition crap). Then it's completely viable to go and download it.

My book was missing a chapter because the store ripped it out, So I had someone photocopy the chapter.
2010-01-13, 8:19 PM #58
Haha, good analogy.

Wait, the book argument is ****ing retarded anyway.
See, Lucasarts has absolutely nothing to lose when someone pirates JK (Especially after buying it through steam.)
Indigo and Del-Rey both have plenty to lose if I go steal Dune, Because then they lose a physical product and the profit it would have made. There is no physical JK disk at stake here.
2010-01-13, 8:24 PM #60
Gah, whatever go discuss it in another thread.

I have a portable version of JK (100mb zipped) that I've been passing around for awhile on my own server. If I get more people interested in developing for this ancient dinosaur of a game, then we all win.

Here's hoping we see a MLP VI.
Lyrics are highly overrated.
2010-01-14, 6:11 AM #62
JK can get down to 100 meg?!! good knackers, why is mine 2.4gig, which doesn't include the other 2gig level stash?
2010-01-14, 3:05 PM #63
Full Instal= 160 megs.
Take out videos and MP levels (For SP on a USB stick) and it's tiny.
2010-01-14, 4:09 PM #64
GOB files compress to ultra small sizes. TODOA for example is 308mb zipped, 1 gig unzipped.

Edit: Using a base installation, patched, and compressed using ultra setting in 7zip made it; 63mb. Removing the MP levels only saves 1.3mb.
Lyrics are highly overrated.
2010-01-14, 4:43 PM #65
Well I don't have it zipped, I run it off the drive so deleting them does make a difference.
2010-01-14, 5:50 PM #66
A difference of 9mb unzipped. Tremendous savings if you are still playing JK on a Pentium 166 w/2gb hard drive.
Lyrics are highly overrated.
2010-01-14, 6:06 PM #67
Or if it's on a USB drive.
Why argue?

Indeed, GOBs are just archive files with no compression. They're like TAR files, basically.

just goes to show how smart the jk programmers were
2010-01-15, 12:01 PM #70
Compression is not an easy thing to code. There are plenty of libraries available now, though.

Is this sarcasm or not?
I really can't tell...
2010-01-15, 2:57 PM #72
I think it's silly. If they compressed them, that means every time we launched the game we'd have to wait for it to decompress. That's lame.
2010-01-15, 3:00 PM #73
You mean like how every game does it today? How textures are stored as JPEGs instead of bitmaps? The short delay of compression is offset by the immense amount of space saved.

Yeah but this was 1997.
2010-01-15, 3:47 PM #75
He's complaining about the gobs not being compressed, not the textures themselves.
2010-01-15, 6:11 PM #76
lol people still edit JK
2010-01-16, 12:36 AM #77
This post never existed, no I am not terrible at reading comprehension.
2010-01-16, 1:13 AM #78
Actually, I take that back since I don't know too well how Direct3D and OpenGL handle compressed texture formats. I don't know at what point they are decompressed and how they are pushed around in memory.
