Spider-Man 4 cancelled....for a reboot

http://hollywoodinsider.ew.com/2010/01/11/spider-man-reboot/

A very sudden news and one I wasn't really looking forward to. I was looking forward to seeing Spider-Man 4 since Raimi seemed dead set on redeeming himself due to the third movie (which isn't as terrible as people make it out to be). What's with the more "gritty and contemporary" direction all superhero movies are going now? Just because it works for Nolan's Batman movies won't mean it will work for other movies.

I never thought they'd do it, but I'm so excited. I hope snarky Peter Parker is back.

Thank God. Between MJ being a two-timing whore and Peter Parker being a whiny *******...

It should be better than anything Raimi can pull out of his ***.

Dumbest thing I've read today although I haven't checked out many of the other threads yet.

Thank goodness for that!
Spiderman 1 was so freaking lame, 2 was ok, 3 was even worse than the first one, I wasn't even planning on going to see 4.
I hope that this reboot makes the good guys likeable this time, among other things :hist101:

Maybe Cameron will finally get the franchise and make another gazillion dollars.

This time around, the series will place Peter Parker in a more contemporary setting, as a teenager battling today’s issues.

So basically... it's like Smallville but with Spiderman. Should appeal to teenage girls I guess.

I can only imagine the ridiculous scientific bull**** Cameron would insert into Spiderman. This is one instance where I don't think I'd like to see Cameron direct something.

I also think it's pretty stupid to reboot a series when the last movie in the series came out like 3 years ago.

I heard Cameron's Spider-Man script was pretty terrible and that the "good" parts were recycled into the Spider-Man Raimi made.

And maybe it's just me, but I don't see "gritty and realistic" working for Spiderman. Nothing about Spiderman says gritty.

did you complain about the Hulk reboot?

I'd like to see more integration of all the Marvel comic movies, on a unrelated note.

It has the potential to be really lame doing it in the movies, but I think it would be good. They don't seem to be stopping new movies any time soon, so why not.

hells yeah. i'd like to see a captain america movie, so that we can have a proper avengers movie.

or hell, just a Nick Fury movie with SLJ being a badass mother****er.

Yeah I thought it was a really stupid idea. It ended up being a pretty cool flick, though.

EDIT: And the Incredible Hulk almost worked as a sequel to the first.

I really dont think Spider Man needed a resetting. To my count there was 1 bad one to two good ones. I thought #2 was fantastic. The big flaw from the outset in the 3rd one was the villains. They forced Venom in there and Sand Man? I dont even remember Sand Man from the cartoons or the comics. Give me a Schocker or Mysterio any day.

Ever heard of Todd McFarlane?

He was pretty much set to direct the first one. Who knows what really happened but it didn't work out. The Cameron script was heavily reworked into what we eventually saw.

Agreed with the exception of the 3 years ago piece. I don't even see that as relevant. They did an excellent job telling comic book on the big screen. And I also agree with you that The Incredible Hulk worked well as a sequel and I think they planned that. It was only a partial reboot reworking some of the foundation. That kind of stuff happens in comics all of the time.

Toxxclause me on this, it's going to be "Darker" and Spider Man will kill someone to be "Edgy".
2010-01-11, 8:25 PM #23
Yeah, because making Batman gritty and realistic led to him killing people to be edgy....

Nothing about Batman was gritty way back in the day either. My mother still thinks it's bizarre that they have it gritty

Except the original detective graphic novels. Not exactly pushing any limits or bloody in the sense that most are, but it was definitely gritty compared to what the Batman movies later did.

The whole YEAH GRITTY REALISM is starting to get a bit old really. I'm still waiting for the gritty film remake of TJ Hooker starring Christian Bale, or an even grittier version of Scum.
nope.

Great - so every ten years, we're going to see the same superhero (but portrayed by a different actor) fighting the same three villians again and again.

Makes me mad. Batman, Spiderman, Superman.

Batman has only fought the one villain twice, and that was his arch-nemesis. :P

Spiderman needs fixing though, Batman I'm very happy with, and I would be quite satisfied to hear the words "there will never be another Superman movie again, everyone has realized how lame he is"

One word - REBOOT

My god, come on holywood do something better than just keep doing the same ol' stuff time and time again.
There are too many reboots going on and not enough pushing on with better stories, Im still waiting for them to re-do Back to the Future.

It'll be a while before we see any more Back to the Future, because as far as I know, Robert Zemeckis owns the IP.

I think they should reboot Avatar.

I'm kinda torn on spider-man. on the one hand, I really thought the people who made the first three had some unseen/under developed talent, and I was happy to see the series leave the high-school roots and go to more realistic settings (Peter wasn't in HS in teh comics from what I remember, but I wasn't a hardcore reader)

On the other hand, when I saw the first movie, I thought they could do better. I didn't like the second movie when I first saw it. When the third one came around, I had huge expectations then it sucked. Now I like the second one best of the three. So it's kinda like...I sorta didn't like all of them, but I still thought they were good?

I'm really scared about a re-boot to be honest, especially since it's in High School again.
