It seems like whenever I play a game online and someone's being really aggressive and rude, or trolling, the best way to get them to reverse their behavior is to simple show them a little kindness.

For instance, a while ago when I was a WoW addict (lol) I remember very clearly one person was trolling in chat for a few hours.. suddenly, I just got this weird idea to whisper him and say "hey man, you seem like a pretty cool person, i like you". He replied with "tell me more". I said "thats about it" (or something along those lines). A few minutes later, he said "<3" and then stopped talking in chat altogether.

Another time I was playing Counter Strike and some guy was being really rude, talking alot of trash and just being really unpleasant. I said pretty much the same thing as I did to the WoW guy, with much the same reaction.. he stopped his unpleasantness instantly.

This was brought to my mind while playing MW2 today.. I pretty much had the same incident occur. Has anyone else ever been in/witnessed the same sort of event?

I bust my cherry on TF2 last night - I was originally bouncing between soldier and pyro (apparently they're straightforward) but then our medic quit and everyone was all MEDIC MEDIC so I gave it a go.

After one match a guy was like "medic you wait too long to uber" - I just said "sorry, it's my first time on this, I don't even know what an uber is" and instantly the whole team (who were dead and able to chat between the rounds) gave me a huge load of help, and a surprising amount of praise - "you're doing really well, keep it up" and stuff. It was really nice. Also, the guy who said "you wait too long" was first in with the help and praise.

I can see this taking up a lot of my time now I've finished Arkham Asylum on hard... <_<

I'm usually like this by default anyway. Yes, when someone is being confrontational, the surest way to have the situation escalate is to give him a reason to continue his aggressive behavior.
Looks like we're not going down after all, so nevermind.

I've noticed the TF2 community is really nice, in the few hours i played it

Aye, and for that very reason I shall be playing more. :)

I too was amazed as the TF2 community. I'm usually reluctant to jump into older online games simply because there's a learning curve and the players will give you a trashing both physically and vocally. To my surprise, my teammates were showing me the ins and outs of the game instead of going on about how much of a ****ty ****ing noob I was.

Does this seem so strange to you? Loatse preached this simple wisdom. So did Jesus.

I bet Jesus would kick arse at Quake.

It's happened in most games I've played online, Jedi Knight 2 was pretty good this way (contrary to their reputations, most of the top clans were happy to teach newbs how to play, it's more fun for everyone that way).

I heard he can, but he has to wait 3 days to respawn after he blows his legs off.

When someone is being obnoxious in a game, I typically spend the rest of the game with a focus on killing said person in the most humiliating &/or irritating of ways. For instance, in Quake Live, I'll attempt to predict their path & lay down enough proximity mines to blow them straight to hell & finish them off with a shotgun if they survive. In Jedi Knight I'll allow them to think that they have the Concussion Rifle but I'll be watching them in 3rd-person from around a corner & if my mines don't kill them, I'll finish them off with a Lightsaber or Thermal Detonator. In Mysteries of the Sith I'll simply freeze them with the Carbonite Gun over & over & over again & then *****-slap them with the butt of the gun & watch them crumble in to oblivion. It doesn't matter how many times they evade my tactics because it's worth it when you finally get even just one kill.
? :)

I usually tend to ignore them since it's the reaction that fuels them.

The oldest trick in the book on Canyon Oasis was to plant mines at the top of the "water tube" to the conc rifle room. As soon as you pop out of the water, bam, you're dead. And you don't even know they're there.

Ahhhh that old chestnut. At my old job, the lunchtime deathmatch game of choice was vanilla Half Life, and some kind soul had made a HL version of CO called COBase. Lots of fun was had there with lasermines... :awesome:

How do you rocket jump in quake/quake2/quake3? I always end up killing myself (or almost) with no benefit. What's the trick? I try aiming straight down and shooting and jumping at the same time, also tried tweaking the timing a bit to jump before or after the shot, but always ends about the same. Tips?

Q3 - you jump, and a picosecond later fire at the ground off and at an angle. If you have delay on your mouse click, do it at the same time.

The others, can't remember.

Picoseconds are so hard to count...

Sounds like me lol. I hate when people don't know how to play, but if they don't know how because they are new, I will gladly show them the ropes. It really depends if I'm in a casual 'I don't care' mood, or a more competitive one. My pet peeve is bad engineers, it's such an easy class.

Back to the OP topic.

I have a friend who specifically goes into servers to troll, and yes, what you do works because it's not fun or funny. The whole reason to go in there and troll is to get people mad, because anger is funny. Naturally. ;)

I was playing MW2 one night after getting home from a double shift at work, dead tired and not playing very well, especially because I don't have more than 5 total hours invested in any Call of Duty multiplayer. After a few matches, I get a message from some joker telling me I "suk," that I'm a "fagget" and a "*****" and that I shouldn't even bother playing the game anymore because it's embarrassing. I responded by just telling him I'm a girl and he starting sending profuse apologies.

Most players aren't that receptive to that kind of advice so people are more likely to give it when they know it's not falling on deaf ears.

He's not a bad guy, a bit of a hippy if anything, but he likes so screw with people online. The only reason I don't hate him for it is because people like him only bother people who let him. If you don't care, they move on.

I played Modern Warfare 2 online for the first time Sunday, and again last night. I got kicked out of 7 games before I ever got to play yesterday. "Hey, boot that level 3 guy, my friend wants to play." Once I finally got to play, I didn't do too bad. Very middle of the pack, occasionally I would do something great.

agree, win haha

I wish I could pull that off, my screen name won't allow it.

I do find it amusing when I pronounce a player's name "correctly" though. A guy named "S1LENT RAG3" is called "ess one lent rag three" or "xXx BLOOD VIPER xXx" has all letters pronounced. It really pisses them off and is very funny to the other people on the channel.

You know that it's impossible to kick players from public games, right?
2010-01-12, 6:13 PM #32
They were large scale games that friends invited me into. I didn't know anybody in the room except for my one friend - perhaps that's why I was kicked. Either way, they referred to me as "level 3 guy," which really hurt my feelings.

You know what game had the worst community ever? Gunbound.

Good lord those guys.

Anyone of a high rank would kick you from the opposing team if you were also highly ranked. They would only play against low ranked players.

Most obnoxious, juvenile group of players.

It helps a lot to bind fire and jump to the mouse buttons. You are going to take damage doing it but the general strategy is that you are using the maneuver to get to a powerup quickly that will either heal you or give you bonus damage which is more valuable than the health you lose in the jump.
