Yes, they do have a high maintenance cost because parts ore expensive (example, bmw's need special synthetic transmission fluid that costs almost $20 a pint), and you'll need to find a mechanic that is familiar with them

It's not just the special transmission fluid. It's EVERYTHING thats expensive.

but they are incredibly fun to drive,

Oh hey look, the only thing I agree with you on.

they have all kinds of convenient and badass extras

Sure if by badass you mean shiny extras that are going to cost a lot when they break.

and they are very, very good looking cars.

Not really. Most of them are fairly boring.

And yes, if you're looking to get girls, you WILL get more attention in a bmw (not why I bought it, obviously, but I can confirm that even in southern california where bmw's are a dime a dozen, I catch girls checking me out while I'm driving much more frequently).

Do you realize what you sound like? You sound like a tool. hey guys check it out, I drive a BMW and girls check me out.

Shut up. Just shut up. You don't know what youre talking about. You're being a cocky ******* because you spent money on a car for its badge. The Jetta and Focus are great cars.

I drive a '02 VW Jetta. It's aiight. Family car when I was in HS, now I got it at Uni. It's served me well, but has had a small host of minor electrical problems... and problems with it's plastic parts (front bumper, mirror adjustment dials, console compartment, cupholder) not being quite sturdy enough.

Edit: dunno how likely this is, but some of the smaller problems I've had may be the result of the fact that it was of the first crop produced at a new Mexican factory they opened, I dunno, the year before. That factory is closed now, apparently.

So it just has a coolant leak? What kind of leak are we talking, like it drips? Or is pours out whenever its running? If it's not too bad just keep a jug of water around with you and pour it in the radiator as needed.

I can see coolant leaking out from around the head gasket. If I drive it every day to work, I'll have to top it off every week to keep the level from dropping below the reservoir. Water isn't an option because it's the middle of winter here.

Thread tl;dr, but I love the heck out of my Outback. It's an 02 manual with heated seats, windshield wiper deicers, mirror defrosters, and an mp3 deck. I'd recommend shooting for an 01-04 for that price range. There are four lines of them, whenver-'00, then '01 was the first major remodel I think, then '05, then the '10 is new again.
Also, I can kill you with my brain.

Oh, and... yes, you can. (and you can certainly find 3 series with even lower mileage in great shape. Here's one advantage to buying a BMW. *Most* BMW owners are fanatics and are very proud of their cars, so they've taken really good care of them, and given them special attention.

(And yes, I do think my 180k mileage BMW is going to last, and I have a mechanic who agrees with me, (though he did reccomend a tune up).)

Where'd I say that was the only thing? I was just providing an example.

We know BMWs are expensive to maintain. I admitted as such. Get over it. Also, contrary to what you may believe, BMW's aren't just falling apart left and right. They're quality manufactured cars, and they don't just break constantly. Yes, when they do, they're more complex and can be harder to fix (or cost more) but that doesn't mean that they're breaking down every week. They're still reliable.

I'm not bragging about it. I don't care whether or not girls check me out (see the part where I said that's not why I bought it) I'm just saying it does happen. You guys are all assuming that Emon's number one factor in buying the car is economy. Maybe it is, but he never said so. So maybe, just maybe, he wants to buy something cool.

I never said they weren't great cars. I said they have a homosexual vibe. And they do. I don't dislike either of them, and I know exactly what they're capable of (I've driven 2 Ford Focus' and 3 Jetta's in the past (owned by friends), but I'd never want one for myself. It's more the look of the cars that's my problem with them. Look at those gay headlights and stupidly angular dashboard on that focus. Ewww. To me what a car says about it's owner is equally important as what it's capable of. (Yes I know my BMW says I'm a wanker. I don't have a problem with that. :p)

(Ah and as for them looking "fairly boring," I don't necessarily disagree, but they have overall, a very good shape and style. If I walked around in hot pink, leather, stretch pants, I sure wouldn't be boring, but do I really want to get people to notice me by looking like that?)
If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.

A 2000 with 115K miles? By "great shape" I don't mean "looks nice and owner says it runs well." I mean something that is mechanically sound through and through and won't cost a lot to keep up. BMWs are expensive to maintain. Old, used BMWs are even MORE expensive to maintain.

I think you can get the picture of what I'm talking about.

Anyway, if you don't want a BMW then that's fine. My reccomendation in that case would be a Toyota Corolla (like I've said about 3 times already). But 115k mile BMW is most likely going to be very mechanically sound. There's really no way to "prove" it to you, I was just pointing out that it's not impossible to find a BMW in that price range that's not a major risk.

also, mb. You're not the only one that can post videos:

Ok a Focus can beat a Nissan GT-R. But a stock BMW M3 would own both of them. It's a moot point anyway, cause he's not looking for a race car.

No, I don't because your example is incredibly contrived. You think it has a homosexual vibe because you once heard someone call it "gay" and you thought that was funny.

...wait, what? The BMW M3 is a moderately priced sports car, if that. The Nissan GT-R is a supercar. It would destroy the M3 on the road or on the track. The Focus RS would likely be far better than both at rallying.

I know my car (Scion tC) has a...bad reputation (ricers lol) but FWIW, it is a good car in my opinion. New it's < $20K (my intended price) but I'm sure you can pick up a used one for like $6K or something like that. I think it has good handling and a pretty good motor (160 bhp/162 ft. lb. torque). It has good acceleration IMO. Gas mileage is good if you don't drive like me. If you keep it at around 65, you should get 27-30 MPG out of it. It's a 2.2L 4-cyl. I think the final drive gear (for manuals at least) could be a little taller. I'm all ready at 3,000 RPM going 65.
Code to the left of him, code to the right of him, code in front of him compil'd and thundered. Programm'd at with shot and $SHELL. Boldly he typed and well. Into the jaws of C. Into the mouth of PERL. Debug'd the 0x258.

No Sarn, most BMW drivers are in it to show off. Most are not fanatics.

Did you get your car checked out? 180k is around where most BMWs start having a lot of trouble. I never said they were falling apart left and right, but they do break down. You know. Important things like control arms.

Yes you are, yes you care, and I doubt it does.

No I'm not. Gris can back me up on this. i give recommendations based on whats cool and reliable, not some boring Kia.

Sarn, you are incredibly eloquent. The only part of that statement I agree with is that you're beng a wanker. I wasn't posting videos to post videos. I was attempting to prove that the Focus is a capable car, especially when it comes to rallying.

Outside my price range at the moment, but thanks for looking for me. I'm going to hold off a few months until my financial situation is a little more clear.

Oh, and I did see a fantastic Grand Marquis Ultimate Edition on eBay, somewhere around 50-60K miles for only 8000 buy it now. :o

Haven't you ever heard of negotiation? I bet you could have that for 7800. If he doesn't agree then walk and call him back in a week to see if his situation has changed. Buyer's market for these cars.

Yeah, I honestly always got a gay vibe from Sarn. *shrug*

Oh wait now I get it. Andrea and the baby are Sarn's beard to cover up for all the gay ****ing he's been doing in the navy. Rock on.

$6000-$8000 is a pretty good range.

Civic's are iffy, because it really depends on what kind of owner had it before. As long as you can get one that's never been tampered with/modified or wrecked, they will go 200k+ miles without any major mechanical problems.

Toyotas are long lasters as well.

Something thats cheap, but probably not very reliable (or the same as the car you had) is a Dodge Neon, they are turds, but you can get a 2005 or newer for around $6000.

Hurr. But ok, honestly, a lot of people have thought me to be one of those non-flamboyant gays in the past. So I guess I do put out that sort of vibe. Maybe it's because I grew up around girls, and it's made me have somewhat feminine mannerisms... But trust me, it's not definitely not true. :p

And please *don't* get a Dodge Neon. I'd rather you get Jetta, or even a Focus. :p

If the Ford Focus gives a homosexual vibe, I'll just have to get over it, cause I wants it. 2012 Ford Focus looks awesome and it's the first new car to get SYNC 2.0 (Aka MyFord).

You should get a Focus RS. Then when (most) Mustang owners call you a pussy, you can brag that your car is faster. ;)

Erm, SYNC's on version 3.1 now, so I doubt they're calling it SYNC 2.0.

Worked absolutely amazing for me a few months ago when I test drove a car with it.

It even understood strange non-English artist/song names like "Monoral - Kiri". In fact, it was the quality of the voice recognition (plus it works with zune :neckbeard:) that made me fall in love with it.

It's the best voice recognition software I've used really. The only problem it has is when you say something that it can't find, it'll basically go with the closest thing that it can find instead of just telling you that it couldn't find anything. I've never had it mess up as long as what I've told it to play was actually on my iPhone.

Same with the phone contacts. It can understand some of my friends' very foreign-sounding names, so I think that's pretty damn good.

I love my 97 Prelude. Sporty, quick, looks good, and has the reliability of any other Honda, Easy to work on, parts of plentiful, huge knowledge base. It doesn't have much of a back seat, more for looks and insurance. You could get a 5th gen Prelude for 8 grand or less.
