Do you still own any VHS?
2010-01-17, 4:38 PM #1
So on Friday night I watched a VHS for the first time in god knows how long. [It was The Patriot if anyone cares.] Anyway I just mentioned this out in the chat and Vin pointed out that he doesn't own any VHS, and when I thought about it I realised that most films that I own are still on tape. The first DVD player I had was an original release PS2, which means that I've actually had DVDs for less than 10 years.

Anyway, do you still own any? And for those of you with youger kids/nephews/neices/cousins etc do they actually know what a VHS is?
nope.

Not in the apartment, but my family has a cache of them back home. I watched Jurassic Park about a month ago on one and was amazed at how fuzzy the picture it seemed compared to my memory.
It took a while for you to find me; I was hiding in the lime tree.

I still own a VHS in my house, but the last thing I watched on it I think was Emperor's New Groove, which at least on an HD TV made the degrading images more apparent. I'm a big fan of older technologies, but I also prefer technologies I think can better stand the test of time. VHS, unfortunately, suffers degradation even in ideal conditions, it would seem, and it's not like a video game cartridge that you can throw against a wall and still have it work.

I do still like how much more immediate it was to record on VHS and audio cassette tapes of TV and radio back in the day, leaving with a physical copy, but oh well.

It probably wasn't nearly as fuzzy when you watched it before. Magnetic tape has a tendency to degrade badly especially when not maintained.

VHS is also a lower resolution than even regular television and dvd by an order of magnitude. So even a perfect quality vhs would look fuzzy with how used to dvd and television we are.

I might still have a copy of Half Baked floating around on VHS somewhere. Certainly no VCR though.

Yeah we have VHS tapes. But no VCR.

I had to watch a VHS for class one time... It took me a week to find someone with a VCR i could borrow. Oh, the tape also exploded in the VCR and I had to take it apart. oops

I have a whole bunch of VHS :D
2010-01-17, 6:06 PM #11
Not only do I not own a VHS, but I can count the friends I have that own one on one hand... it's one.

I know this because when I was getting rid of my VHS tapes a couple of years ago, everyone declined informing me how they got rid of them ages ago.

I have an unopened star wars box set on VHS. But it's probably degraded beyond viewability by now.

Don't open it whatever you do... and keep it in good condition, you'll cash in!

Most of the movies back home are VHS. I think there's only 5 or so DVDs.

Even if I did own any ... they would be old enough now to be completely unwatchable on the VCR I don't have.

My relatives found some old home videos a few years back ... they were probably ~15 years old. It was all static. Funny..because a few weeks ago another relative found ~50 year old film home movies and it's fine. (no audio though). The older technology holds up fine.

Sure but undegraded tapes on standard definition sets of generally smaller dimensions still would not seem as bad as watching a tape today on, likely, a larger screen designed for higher resolution content. I'm not really arguing the point, just putting it in context.

I remember a friend of mine, over 13 years ago, that was into laser discs. He often chastised VHS movies. I invited him over one night and we watched something on a 4 head VCR playing through a Dolby II Pro Logic Surround system (pretty much the best we had to work with back then) and he was really surprised. Of course that pales in comparison to what we have available to us now.

I have a THX Widescreen version of the OT released on VHS that was billed as the last time the trilogy would ever be released in that form (restored print, unmolested edit). Each tape opens with a segment of an interview of Lucas by Maltin. Yeah, that's one version of several releases of the trilogy I have.

I do believe that's them.
I remember fast-forwarding the interview so many times it got damaged to the point where the interview was broke, but everything else was fine.

Hmm, freaky coincidence. We got rid of our VHS cassettes just this weekend.

(Well, technically we haven't got rid of them yet, because they're in a box in the boot of my car waiting until we go into town next weekend to visit the charity shop.)

But those are the original tapes, not the THX release with the interviews. Maybe you can find yours on this page.

I never bought a VCR, or owned any VHS tapes. Once I had my first PS2, that's all I ever needed. It'll be a sad day for me when DVDs go south, which is only a few years away.

I don't own any movies in DVD or VHS. I rarely watch a movie more than once unless it's totally tubular (e.g. Star Wars) & could never justify paying $10-20 or so for a dust collector. However, I must admit that I do own this (only the "Empire Strikes Back"). I've had it since I was a small child & just can't bare to part with it.
? :)

I have a crapload of VHS tapes. I have more DVDs than VHS, but I can't afford to replace all my VHS tapes with DVDs. Although I wish I did (because they'd take up less room).
