I will probably either put it in my savings or use it to pay off bills. I never quite understood why people blow it all away.

I usually get about $1000 back, but this is the first full year I didn't go to school, so I won't get the education credit. I still have charitable donation deductions, but I don't know how much (if any) the IRS will return. If I do get anything back, it will go towards a motorcycle helmet and the Motorcycle Rider Safety Course for Wife so she can get her license.

I was up until the point where she pointed out in my own handwriting that I put "2" down in "Number of Allowances"

Furthermore. All this time on my paycheck it said "Number of Allowances: 2" and I never bothered to question that.

In short, I fail at learning important financial matters.

I'll probably end up paying about $1000 - $2000 since none of my income gets taxes pre-deducted...

Because some people are responsible throughout the year, pay their bills on time, have no debt, and almost two years salary in savings, so they reward themselves with this "unexepcted" (see previous explanation) windfall.

I pay my bills on time, have no debt, and have money saved up. I guess I have never felt the need to "reward" myself for doing the right thing.

Then you're just letting the best in life pass you by.

That is ridiculous. Frivolously spending an income tax return definitely does not rate as "the best in life".

I hope those "two years salary in savings" are either part of your retirement fund or you're actually doing something with (investing). If you just have two years of salary in a bank account somewhere, what a waste.

I'm going to receive $2841 from federal & have to pay $166 to state.
? :)

So it turns out we should get a refund of a little less than $5700. Pretty good considering we maybe had $1200 withheld and probably grossed about $83,000 last year.

I haven't filed yet, but I did receive a check from UTC for 32 hours that I worked and they didn't pay me. I stopped working for them in November but I just got it last week because the post office here sucks ***.

That sort of reminds me of my wife's boss (not really). He purposely hires illegal immigrants (most of them are from Burma/Myanmar) just so they can't complain when he doesn't pay them (they're afraid of getting fired, being deported & few of them speak English). He has several employees that haven't received a paycheck since December. There's nothing more satisfying to him than watching his entire kitchen staff weeping when their paychecks bounce week after week & they get charged fees for it which he refuses to reimburse them for.
? :)

Pretty sure he would be racking up the most in overdraft charges if the checks to his employees are continually bouncing.

The end result might feel the same but it would seem to me that there is a difference between them not paying you and you not getting the check because the post office sucks.

Oh, come on, it doesn't even makes sense. The boss would probably be the one crying if all of the checks he is writing to his kitchen staff are bouncing every week! I imagine he would be paying more in overdraft fees than to the kitchen staff. And why wouldn't your wife report these practices of his? There certainly are creeps in this world but your story smells as fishy as anything those asian immigrants are likely to be preparing.

I'll be using mine to pay medical bills. We owe $1800 for the birth of our daughter ($10,000 if we didn't have insurance) & $1000 for my unsuccessful hernia surgery ($4000 if we didn't have insurance).
? :)
