After i finnish Ogels city I want to start modding another game. However Ive fallen behind in the world of gamming and am wondering what the next big hit will be. (like JK, its in its 11th year and still running semi-strong)

What game\engin would youu all suggest?

Thanks

Unreal is the only good and free technology on the market. You can mod an existing Unreal game or create your own not for profit game with UDK.

Hammer is a little outdated and episode 3 won't be for another year... :(

A modern Radient editor would be good - try CoD4.

CoD4 doesn't have a very major mod scene, and MW2 effectively killed it.

Why must a game be the next big hit in order for you to edit it? I have been messing around with Sauerbraten engine. It's interesting in that it has built-in editing features, making terrain in-game is pretty fun. The graphics aren't that great, and the gameplay isn't amazing, but the editor is fun. http://sauerbraten.org/

Also I've been keeping up with Wolfire which is cool, they are an indie game company that releases all their in-progress work to people who paid for preorders. Their editing tools are really cool as well, they have custom editors for levels, animations/keyframes, skeletal rigging, physics, etc.

Sauerbraten actually looks pretty nifty. I'm downloading the Mac version now & am going to give it a whirl. Have any of you toyed around with Google Sketchup? I've been toying with it for a few days & it seems intuitive.
? :)

This is unacceptable. You are hereby bound to mod for JK for the next 10 years. :hist101:

Hm, UDK and Sauerbraten look pretty nice.

But then again, TODOA proved to me that all my ideas and thoughts for "modern" gameplay have already been implemented in the early 2000s so I think I'll just get back to Deus Ex when I get a new comp. At least it looks pretty enough these days.

Unreal or Hammer. Hammer is easy, and not really that far of a jump from JED/ZED to me. Unreal takes a bit more dedication.

The problem with hammer is that the editor doesn't really support the creation of realistic showers :/

Hammer needs to work out on its quirks. For me, texturing brushes is a huge pain in Hammer. Browsing the game textures is a nightmare, applying the textures exactly how you want it is annoying and the whole process is time-consuming (lack of key input, alot of it involves clicking text-box buttons).

Maybe I'm missing a big, important detail.

No, texture application is a pain. I agree. I also don't like it's inability to match textures on small surfaces well. Especially on round or arch objects.
