I for one am completely shocked and amazed that Lucas intends to continue whoring out Star Wars. Who could possibly have seen this coming? It's like the sun setting in the west or something. MADNESS.

All I want is the original non-edited ones in HD, no edits, no 3D, no "Features" just Star Wars in 1080p.

I'd prefer the thx-mastered versions. (NOT the special editions)

I for one would love to never hear "3D" mentioned again in relation to any television show or movie. Stupidest gimmick that's ever threatened to go mainstream. If in ten years everything is in 3D, I am going to stop watching TV/Movies.
2010-01-21, 4:12 PM #13
I haven't seen a "modern" 3d movie yet. I think I will go see avatar this weekend (assuming it's not still sold out as it has been for weeks). The 3d displays they have at parks like disneyland is old-school, I hope the newer stuff is better.

Didn't that 3d thing effect started in the late 50's?

Dammit, why can't OMG 3D EFFECTS just die out like VIRTUAL REALITY of the 90s?

Hell, even Nvidia is into this stuff.

It worked really well for Avatar so why not give 3D more of a chance? Do you guys hate it just because of the glasses?

I agree with this entirely. I always thought it was stupid until Avatar. That was pretty sweet in 3d. It didn't feel like a gimmick at all. It was just 3d. No stuff popping out at you or anything. Just added an extra and welcome layer of immersion to the whole experience.

I tried it out on display at microcenter and was pretty impressed. But have yet to see one of these new 3D films

And why, in all honesty, wouldn't Lucas want to release the Star Wars movies in 3D? The effect has finally been refined to the point of near perfection, and the movie that did it will soon be the highest grossing movie ever made. If it's a way for him to make money, he's got every right to do it. It's called capitalism.

With the new 3d technology, Star Wars would be pretty awesome in 3d.

From what I understand, you have to actually film using special cameras to be able to achieve that depth and realism. I'm not certain it can be pulled off with pre-existing films.

And yes, wearing glasses throughout the film, if you are unused to wearing glasses is rather tedious.

Besides the technology still isn't quite up to snuff, in my opinion. There were plenty of times were Avatar flicked or blurred out poorly during rapid camera movement.

My main concern is Lucas putting his cursed grubby mitts on Star Wars again. You just know he'll have to make a special special edition for release with altered scenes and all that jazz. Like Brian said, he'll probably fling bantha poo our way, have a few more burping aliens and maybe a new dance off between Luke and Han Solo. Who knows!

I can say that wearing glasses over glasses is pretty awkward and uncomfortable.

I never thought of that. Yikes, that does sound terrible.

I guess the only good way is to be used to wearing glasses, and then wearing contact lenses to the movie? :P

Nobody has claimed that he doesn't have the right. I have the right to do a lot of things, but that doesn't make it good for me to do them. For example, I can wear a tutu and dance on the street corner, but would you really want me to?

Because people have to let others know that they aren't paying for it because they don't like it to satisfy their egos.

I'm going back through all the massassi tutorials. I'm going to delete all the screenshots and replace them with random pictures of dog poop. Some of them, I'll replace with flash versions that have farting noises. I'll also change all the facts around so you get confused. If you have a problem with it, I expect you to keep your mouth shut in order to prove something or other about your ego.

I've heard this argument before and I've never understood it. At a certain point after someone has created something, it ceases to be his own intellectual property and is an inextricable element of the society it was given to. This is the reason copyright duration used to be - and should be - quite short. George Lucas made a contribution to modern culture. People who feel that contribution was especially significant are going to feel strongly about him making changes to it, and they should feel strongly about it.

Think about it this way: the French made the Statue of Liberty. Should the French be allowed to 'remake' it? Turn it into a postmodernist statue of molten wreckage, for instance? If people objected, possibly because it's a landmark and a symbol of America, would you call them crybabies? Apparently you would.

the effect that has "been refined to perfection" still requires that you shoot the movie with a special camera system (or go 100% CGI)

i think what needs to be realized is GL would have to...

1. do a 2D to 3D conversion... the results are never all that great
2. recast and refilm the whole ****ing thing with 3D cameras
3. remake the whole trilogy as CGI animation

any of the 3 would likely be used as another excuse to delay the bluray release of the movies even more

While I'm actually on board, at least in part, with your point, there are some problems with the Statue of Liberty example you gave:

1) While the design and such could be traced to one guy, we're pretty much talking about something from one nation to another, not (arguably) the vision of one person to the public. We're usually a little more understanding of giving the rights to an individual over a nation, however right or wrong that may be in certain situations.

2) There is only "one" Statue of Liberty in your example. Changing it would destroy the original. Lucas can make as many versions of Star Wars as he wants, but the original will still be available. The Holiday Special still exists, after all.

3) It would seem to be a bit of an infringement on freedom of speech if we denied him the ability to do what he wishes with Star Wars, especially if we're going on the "Star Wars is public domain" argument, no?

I admittedly am not as vehemently upset over his revisions as most old Star Wars fans are either.

As for the movies being remade in 3D, I can't say I see it "destroying" the franchise, but I've never seen what's so great about 3D either, so I'm pretty indifferent.

Had George Lucas bestowed upon the people of the world ownership of Star Wars as a gift, that would be different. He made Star Wars and he owns Star Wars. The French gave America the Statue of Liberty as a gift. Had the French simple erected the statue on their land as a salute to American liberty they would have the right to do with it what they want, but they didn't. They gave it away.

George Lucas owns Star Wars. He can change it and re-release it how ever much he wants to. It's not like he comes to your house and takes your copies and replaces them with the new ones whether you like it or not. And to the people that want the originals on DVD or Blu Ray just like they were released in theaters, I say too bad. You can get the special editions and prequels on DVD and someday Blu Ray.

When Capcom made the Resident Evil remake for Gamecube I didn't ***** about the fact that they changed a bunch of things to try to improve it instead of releasing the same game on a different system, so I don't really see why people ***** about Lucas doing things to Star Wars when he thinks the movies are better with the changes.
