"Oh, you'll be ok if you lose your job because you can continue your medical benefits with COBRA until you find a new job!"

What they don't tell you is that COBRA is ridiculously expensive. About 450% more expensive per month in my case. What a joke.

But wait, you should try applying for Medi-cal because you're considered low-income now. Oh, no, sorry, you're not eligible for medi-cal. Your sister is because she's considered "disabled" because she's a recovering drug addict. The illegal resident down the street is because... I can't explain that one. The prostitute down town is because she acquired HIV/AIDS through unprotected sex and intravenous drug use.

Ugh, this is my first taste of how horribly disappointing this whole system is.

Didn't obama pass a law that the feds would subsidize the cobra coverage? You should look into that, I think they cover over 70% now or something.

My 1st COBRA bill was +$500. After that it's about $270/month. While I'm not a fan of COBRA it's a lot cheaper than paying for private insurance. I would simply go without medical insurance if my prescriptions weren't more than my monthly payment. I have 3 prescriptions which would total about $300/month. I'm also trying to get surgery on one of my toes (nerve damage caused by a workplace accident) & one of my knees (torn quad muscle as well as an undetermined issue with the joint itself). Hell, having my wife's tooth pulled earlier this month was $170 out of our pocket & that's WITH insurance.

His former employer is supposed to contact him if he's eligible for this subsidy. That doesn't mean that he should trust them to do so though. He may actually be getting the discount & not be aware of it (it's the difference between $800/month & $300/month).

I'm lucky to be paying only $160/mo with COBRA. Fortunately I got benefits with being promoted to part time from per diem so I'll have real health insurance in two months.
