What? The History Channel has produced a documentary about WW2? Wow! If only they made more of those.

I caught bits and pieces of that when it was on, I think...I'm sure the footage is top quality, but does it seem to anyone else like calling it "HD" is..oh...a BIT of an exaggeration?

At first glance, the very concept of WWII in HD seems like an oxymoron. After all, isn't the footage from back then nothing more than grainy black-and-white newsreel? And really, how much definition can be added to film that was shot more than 60 years ago? The answers: no, and quite a lot, actually. The quality of much of what is seen in the course of these 10 episodes (each around 45 minutes long) is surprisingly good. Add to that the fact that most of it is in color (not colorized, but originally recorded in that medium, some at the behest of the United States government), and the result is nothing short of astonishing.

But yeah, I'm a little surprised they called it "HD".

It's on Blu-Ray, to be used on a blu-ray player.
So logicly it must have higher definition then a DVD, so it follows that it's high definiton.
Whether it's full 1080p is arguable.

Yeah, but just because there's lots of pixels displayed doesn't mean they all hold meaningful information that would be lost without them. At a certain point, 1080 rows of blurry image is no more useful than 480 rows of blurry image.

It was originally shot in film, so I expect that this will be better quality than the DVD version.

However, the DVD version is also entitled WWII in HD. Go figure. :hist101:

Get your hands on "World at War" instead if you can. I cannot recommend the series enough.
