Win7 boot problems
2010-01-31, 6:30 PM #1
Attempting to get this Windows 7 installation running. My PC is a bit older no doubt, but I did run the Beta of Win 7 with no problems.

It runs through the whole installation without a hitch, but when you start the computer it will reboot itself right before you would normally see the loading Windows screen. And keep rebooting itself. I can't even bring up the option for safe mode (that is, it's still f8 right?)

I tried all the normal troubleshooting, like installing with only the VGA cable plugged in, all non essential USB devices removed, only 1 HDD connected which was previously running Win XP 64bit. I removed the install DVD right after it copied files, and changed my BIOS back to boot HDD first. These were all things I found online to try, but nothing works. I'm 99% sure there is no hardware issue here, I know I could just install windows XP just fine. It just must be some sort of compatibility issue but I'm not sure where to start.

Try booting from the DVD and using the Recovery Console. Run the fixmbr command on the drive and see if that helps.

Something similar happened to me with bad ram, so run memtest86 just to be certain.
Beyond that, install it again, and test the disk.

I had a similar problem... I took out my ram and put it back in... worked fine. I might have changed up the order of the ram or something.

Make sure you're booting to the correct hard drive setting in BIOS. Some mobos will just reboot instead of telling you it couldn't find a bootable disk.

So after cussing and opening the case up a 100 times, I pretty much set it up how it was the first time, and it worked.. I don't know what happened

Some new info.

So apparently, when I actually got the install to work, was when I had disconnected my 2nd internal HDD.

I figured this out, when I went to plug in my 2nd CDROM and I booted up the computer and it did the same thing, restarted the system right before loading windows. Even after I turned off the setting for Automatically reboot on system failure.

So Im thinking power supply or something, but it's weird that all the devices seem to work when I was running XP. Maybe the mobo is just showing it's age.

Are your old CDROM and HD IDE? and on the same cable?

I was thinking maybe it's a Master/Slave issue.

Yes, I had the primary drive set as MS but the 2nd was CS so that actually fixed that issue. But the HDD's are sata, and when my second drive is connected, the computer reboots.
