A horrible teaser, only shows like 5 seconds of gameplay, but :awesome:!

Episodic content? Lame.

Oldschool sonic? Win.
Think while it's still legal.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Sonic Team managed to screw this up.

They didn't mess up Sonic Rush. That game was amazing.

They just have a hard time figuring out what sonic should be in 3d. When we all know, he just needs to be 3d in the sense that Super Smash Bros is 3d.

In theory :awesome:

In reality... Sonic Team.... I'm gonna buy it, but I'm not going to let it get my hopes up.

Or New Super Mario DS.

Seriously, 2D games are still fun. I think some publishers need to remember that. The cool thing about a 3D sonic in a 2D environment is that hand drawing all the animations isn't necessary which is apparently very time consuming, particularly for making changes.
2010-02-04, 8:41 AM #14
Yeah, I would think creating a 3d model and animating it (especially for adding or changing animations) would be far faster than creating hundreds of sprites.

This is exactly how I feel. There's been too many crappy sonic games for me to get too excited, we shall see.

According to the very short Gamespot interview, it looks like the team on this isn't strictly the same Sonic Team, but also includes a collection of old members from the Genesis days.

Meh, I always liked the first few levels of the first one where you could go ultra fast the whole time. Then the later levels you have to slow down or you'll die. Then it becomes just a crappier version of mario. Meh.

As long as they use the name Robotnik for the international version rather than Dr. Eggman. Making us endure Dr. Eggman since the days of Sonic Adventure was unforgivable.

Also, Sonic Rush wasn't much fun. I'm a huge fun of the old Mega Drive / Genesis Sonic games and didn't like Sonic Rush at all.

Really?? Sonic rush was almost identical to the old sonic games except you were faster, had two screens, and could do stunts while in the air...

I so way beyond hate anything Sonic post-90s. The games are awful, Sonic's new look is dumb, the music is dumb, and even the cartoon is unbearable. 99% of Sonic's current fanbase is the furry community and everything Sega has done to the franchise has been to appease people who literally wish they could **** Amy.

Sonic Rush is "almost identical to the old sonic games" except it sucked. It was full of everything that makes modern Sonic retarded, especially the flood of stupid characters nobody cares about. The extra super kickin' rad speed just meant the levels were reduced to unavoidable instant death traps that necessitate precognition in order to succeed on the first attempt.

If it's anything like Sonic Rush... no. Just no.

Well then that's one plus for this, as I believe they said it won't even feature Tails, much less any of the newer characters.
2010-02-05, 1:45 AM #23
Sonic was meant to be a 2D side scroller. I don't think the game works from any other vantage.
2010-02-05, 1:54 AM #24
I enjoyed Sonic Unleashed (though I only played the Demo). But Sonic must be a side-scroller, that's how it is.

Doesn't have to be 2D though, just a side scroller.

They need to fix his running animation too, if the legs don't look like a blurry wheel it's no deal.

I don't know, I'm totally down with Tails and Knuckles. To me they are perfectly valid characters (and also awesome, especially the Knuckman). I did a report on echinda's in 1st grade because of Knuckles

Brian, is there any game that isn't Jedi Knight that you actually enjoy? :P Seriously, I don't remember the last time I saw you give a positive review about a game. :XD:

I've never liked Knuckles, but I always enjoyed the weird 2-player co-opness of Tails and Sonic, would've been better if Tails teleported back onto the screen quicker though

I disagree there. I had no problem at all making it through levels my first time without dying. I do agree on the new world of characters. It needs to be like the old, Sonic, Tails, (perhaps Knuckles), Robotnik, Robo Sonic (His dad, for those of you who didn't know), and that stupid rooster robot and his buddy. The end.

I would imagine for episode 1, they'll keep it just to Sonic. Then with later releases, they'll add in Tails, Knuckles, and hopefully stop there. :P

Sonic Adventure 1/2 weren't bad, they just were too kiddified. The terrible voice acting and overly cartoonish cutscenes were brutal. The gameplay (minus camera problems) was pretty good.

In my opinion, it lost the "edge" that sonic used to have, back in the Genesis days when Sega was playing towards a more mature audience. Like he was more of a badass back then. :awesome:

I'm fairly certain that's nostalgia there. You were much younger, and the graphics/audio were more limited.

Were you the age you are now back then, and had they the technology they do now back then, I'm guessing the "edge" would have been even worse, akin to Poochy or whatever the parody dog's name from the Simpsons was.

They did more with less, and told a different story. It wasn't about friendship and love and crap like that back then. It was just about Sonic taking on Robotnik for his crimes against nature. Sure it wasn't deep, but neither is the current line of games.

Even in S3nK, they introduce Knuckles, what his relationship with Robotnik is, the betrayal, and subsequent alliance with Sonic to take down Robotnik for good. And they did this without saying a single word back then. I think they could have done very well on modern hardware telling that same story, instead of trying to make friends with all these weird characters that in reality have no major impact on the fight for good and evil.

I'd kill for a Sonic game set in the SatAM/Archie continuity.

People say that Sonic would have been 'Poochie'-egdy, but they're forgetting that: 1.) Sonic did have cartoons and comics, and 2.) the setting was really damn dark. Because kids' shows were dark. Sonic, Secret of NiMH, All Dogs Go To Heaven,... we grew up with some awful, horrible, depressing stuff.

Sonic is more colorful and more 'edgy' because he's being marketed to the modern kid with modern toys... but that doesn't mean he would have been.

This. Everytime I think about it, it makes me feel like my grandpa when I say "Kids today are ********"... just like we were to our gramps.

You seem to have forgotten about the other Sonic cartoon that was aired around the same time. Though that's not quite as Poochie-style as much as...well...special.
