Advice on eBook Reader

Peace, Love, Understanding (PLU)

Can anyone give advice on a decent eBook Reader? I want to keep up with lots of journal articles. Some of them will contain pictures, graphs, etc... so support for a variety of picture formats is mandatory.

Other requirements:

-I will be spending lots of time reading this, so a screen that is easy on the eyes.

-A pretty big size.

-Internet access, sound, etc.... not needed.

Thank you, fellow ***-hats

In conclusion, the great Tenshu2.0 will attempt to post a combination of smilies which has never been done before:

How big? If you want the biggest eBook reader out there, I think the Kindle DX is still the biggest, but of course it's not cheap. I have one and love it. It can do pictures and stuff fine, but of course it can only show them in grayscale. If color's an issue, then well you're going to have to wait longer because there are no true color eBook readers out yet.

Otherwise I'd say the normal Kindle 2 or the Nook in the realm of smaller, more affordable ones.

Thanks Darth!

The Kindle DX is definitely the kind of display size I'm going for... The Kindle (2) is a bit too small for my tastes. Gonna check out the DX further. It looks great...

How is the iPad as an ebook reader?

Unknown. Nobody outside of Apple has seen one out of doors and it's an LCD display which won't be as easy on the eyes as a Kindle. It's outdoor performance may even be nonexistant.

Thanks..

are there alternatives to the kindle DX - meaning, eInk technology with large screen size?

There's the iRex 1000S, which has a screen slightly larger than the DX, but it's old, super expensive (like $859 retail I think), has a terrible battery, and is just generally not all that good.

Otherwise, the closest mainstream reader to the Kindle DX in size is the Sony Reader Daily Edition, but it's only got a 7 inch screen compared to the DX's 9.7 inch screen.

You can see if Sony's readers are that size. Other than that, I like the nook, but it is small.

I've been searching around for a while, and apparently the ebook reader market is still pretty limited :/

Yeah, there is no real competition for the Kindle DX at the moment, and really the only 3 major players right now are Amazon, B&N, and Sony. There's some stuff that might come out later this year that looks interesting, but who knows when (or if) some of them will come out and what price they will be.

I think that if you're simply going to use a device as an eReader, you're better off getting something cheaper than the iPad that's more suitable for your activities. I really enjoy the Sony eReader series. I've had the chance to play with 2 of them & they're great. This is coming from someone that absolutely hates most Sony products too.
? :)

Someone at work has one - its definitely a nice device, but not as portable as the Kindle 2. But what you're concerned about is size so it probably is the best device for you. I might wait a few months to see if they respond to the iPad by lowering their price a bit - but in reality that might not happen.
