Sea Shepard is this Anti-Whaling activist group.

A couple times now they've lost ships to collisions.

They just got a new boat in the last month or two due to a ramming

They keep blaming the Japanese ships for the collisions.

I call bull****.

watch the video, i call bull****. They crossed the path of the other ship on purpose, the Japanese ship tries to escape when it realises the other is changing course but can't in time.

The Japanese did it.

How can you trust anybody who prints "RESEARCH" on the side of a whaling ship? At least the activists are honest about what they're trying to do.

They put Research on the side because Thats what they're doing

No, they aren't.

1.) Their research objective is to determine that it is safe to resume commercial whaling.
2.) Their only research motive for killing whales is to analyze stomach contents. Identical information could be obtained by analyzing stool.
3.) They use the ICRW to justify selling whale meat even though the IWC has condemned Japan's research programs for having no scientific merit.
4.) The "research" vessels and institutions are owned and operated by subsidiaries of commercial fishing corporations.
5.) Japan's official response to the controversy is to blame it on racism. Even they can't think of a better argument for it.

I think the guy with the little boat would be best off not running in front of the guy with the big boat.

That's just me, though.

As long as whaling is sustainable, I don't see any problem with it.

Man, I thought they finally announced a (naval) sequel to Opposing Force (with a guy not actually named Shepherd). Guess not!

Its illegal, and they're whaling in a nature preserve.

also, anyone who says the japanese didn't cause that collision has never been at the helm of a large ship. they totally swung the stern in for a buttslap

Well, I guess the Japanese don't appear to want to honor the treaty, so I guess it isn't illegal for them.

So, can someone tell me what exactly is wrong with whaling? I mean, obviously it could potentially wipe out species, but what is the big deal about banning it completely? Why not regulate it or something?

It is being regulated.

By an international treaty the Japanese government signed, ratified and then wiped their asses with.

Well, technically it officially is, IIRC. Everyone knows the Japanese are playing fast and loose with the rules but nobody really cares because nobody gives a **** about minke whales and Sea Shepard makes everyone go :cripes:.

Given how the Japanese can liberally wipe their asses with this "treaty" with no repercussions it probably isn't worth all that much in the first place.

I remember like 0 specifics on this thing though...but I'm pretty sure I'm vaguely accurate here.

Well sure, I had gathered that the Japanese were not following the rules, so to speak, I was just wondering why the rules were implemented in the first place (or for that matter, what exactly the rules are).

Hey COmmander 598, what's the significance of your internet name? Is it from something or is it completely random and unique?

Pretty much. It's all a face-saving thing, just like how they literally beat up anybody filming their in-bay dolphin slaughters.

I, personally, don't really care about whaling. That's why I don't badmouth the other countries that engage in commercial whaling - because they are quite candid about it. Japan lies, though. They lie because they know most of the people on the planet are opposed to whaling, and they're too two-faced and cowardly to be honest about it.

But they have a good reason. Wish I could find this in hi-def. [Edit : Better.]

After whale populations crashed, the IWC put in place rules that attempted to make whaling sustainable. Populations continued to crash, however, so after much public pressure they banned it outright.

On an interesting side note, Japanese whaling may soon come to an end, as the government subsidies that keep it going are threatened by the economic downturn. Also, they have trouble selling the meat because there isn't enough demand for it to justify the number of whales they kill.

On a random note isn't this the group that Hayden P. (Disney, heroes) belongs to? Maybe not but I know she is big into sea life preservation groups.

Maybe it is like the ridiculous sinking of the HMS Victoria, when Admiral Tryon ordered his ships to turn and sail towards eachother and then turn away at the last minute and sail parallel to eachother in two columns - however, the HMS Victoria somewhat predictably collided with the HMS Camperdown and sank.

That means the Japanese government has decided to breach the treaty. The means that what the Japanese whalers are doing isn't illegal, but it should be.

Japanese whalers hunt in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary. IWC established the sanctuary by popular vote (actually, I'm pretty sure Japan had the sole dissenting vote.)

That's why it's a tricky area. It depends a lot on what you define as 'illegal' in an international context. What they're doing isn't illegal by Japanese law, but it's clearly antagonistic to the other signatories to the ICRW.
