Sarah Palin wrote cheat notes on her hand for an interview.

I really, really hope she doesn't run next time round...whatever is left of the Republican party need to distance itself from these sorts of people. This sort of news is really trivial at best; but it does remind me all the time she is still hanging around the back...

What? I thought Sarah Palin claimed, through a spokesman, she had PHOTOGRAPHIC MEMORY.

Well it doesn't matter because Sarah Palin doesn't matter.

I don't understand why this was even posted, much less reported, much less even noted.

Apart from the usual feeling of smugness it gives to certain individuals with low self esteem, reporting on a failed vice presidential candidate that never had broad appeal and never held great popularity is inane.

It's funny, that's why I posted it.

She's actually really popular in the Anti-intellectual/Corporatocratic (Corporate Oligarchic)/"Libertarian" who has never read an economics book/Tea Party movement.

Making Palin and her group look foolish is really, really important.

They do a great job of that on their own, based on the merits of their ideas.

Attacking one of their leaders/figureheads because she writes notes on her hands is not exactly a scathing rebuttal of their stance. It's knee biting at best.

That, and you are implying they matter, or most importantly that making Palin seem foolish will matter to the audience you want to target. Long story short, I think it's an inane jab at some woman that I was tired of when she was introduced. I remember when I found out she was the VP candidate, I was laughing so hard that my colleagues asked me what happened.
2010-02-07, 4:28 PM #13
I don't know, I think they're pretty important. The movement was organized by Dick Arney (as a lobbyist,) it's funded by a lot of conservative sources and they're supported by Newscorp. They have a good chance at winning a lot of conservative Democrat votes and picking up a lot of pieces of the Republican party - it wouldn't be the first time in American history that it happened.

That said, the ridiculous part of the thing is... why her hands? There's no shame in using index cards.
2010-02-07, 4:29 PM #14
I think someone said a while back that making Palin as a person look bad isn't important, but making the idea that she represents look bad it.
2010-02-07, 4:50 PM #15
My only point is that I don't think this, nor even showing that Palin can't walk and chew bubblegum at the same time, will matter to those that stop and think "hey, this lady has some great ideas!". Mainly because they probably do they same thing as she did. In short: anyone who thinks the ideas she represents are good, probably won't be phased by anything silly she does. If anything this is more "humanizing".

On a tangent, I'm also friends with people as neocon as they can get, and they don't like her. WHO THE HELL LIKES THIS LADY? Why won't she go away? Can't she just fade into obscurity with the other failed candidates?
2010-02-07, 11:59 PM #16
There are a lot of people who really like her. I've just never actually met any of them. I know they exist, but I get the feeling they're not the sort of person I'd hold conversations with.

What people really need to understand is whether you like it or not Sarah Palin is relevant in today's political world. While it's very obvious to most people that she should not be, she still is, and that's just a fact of life. No amount of saying "but she's stupid lololol" is going to fix it. You don't get it. The people who like her like her because she's not an intellectual who makes them feel stupid. They identify with her, and since most people are misguided enough to think they're smart, her supporters think she is smart too. They think she just doesn't do a lot of uppity political talkin' because she gives it to you straight, not because she has no idea what she's talking about.

Imagine that I'm an alcoholic train conductor, and I derail a train because of my alcoholism.

If I then swear off alcohol forever, it's in the past. Nobody cares. People should STOP bringing up my train accident.

If I keep drinking and driving, we have a problem! It's not in the past. In fact, there's a pretty good chance that it's going to happen again. People should care. More importantly, people should KEEP bringing up my train accident - I might get shamed into going sober!

Does that help you understand my perspective on this trainwreck?
2010-02-08, 10:36 AM #20
Right, and in politics, the key to making sure the conductor can't get back on the train is ignoring him.

I'm not sure who you are saying "doesn't get it", but that's my point to a degree. Attacking her intelligence does absolutely nothing.

This allegory fails, because instead of attacking the problem, you are attacking the conductor's wife for burning the toast. You are not addressing the problem, you are addressing something incredibly tangential.

This isn't addressing the failings of Palin's ideals, her lack of broad appeal, or the hypocrisy in some of her statements.

This does not talk about any of the organizations dealing with Palin, republican, tea party, or Alaskan moms.

This is talking about her writing notes on her hand. This is incredibly silly and you look silly for actually tagging this with importance.

Unless you are exaggerating to make a point that some of us are taking this way too seriously (i.e. me), which then, awesome job.

When have quiet people ever dominated in any exercise of rhetoric?

Modern political conventions: if you don't have anything to say, keep talking anyway. It's stupid, but it works.

Isn't the far right's addiction to fundamentalist, uncharismatic, inarticulate leaders the problem?

My allegory wasn't really about derailing trains, after all. It was about alcoholism.

What a tool. I hate that. (regarding Gibbs)
Warhead[97]

Gibbs kind of reminds me of Baghdad Bob and while I find it humorous that Palin would have notes written on her hand for a speech I think it is silly to equate that with cheating.

I don't have a problem with her having notes. Just... don't write them on your hand. And don't criticize the President of the United States for using a teleprompter when you have notes on your hand.

Energy, Budget Cuts, Taxes, Lift American Spirits. What a list.

Index cards! There is zero shame! Literally millions of speeches have been read off of index cards!

The whole situation is ridiculous because it's so infantile. Everybody'd have the same reaction if Palin went up on stage with a toy firetruck and spent half an hour pushing it around while making "vroom vroom" noises. Once you hit 20 the only reason you should ever get pen on your hand is if you're a lefty.
2010-02-09, 6:34 PM #31
The issue is, this further cements her as "just a normal person" and not some fancy politician in the eyes of the morons who worship her. I can hear it now... "she just scribbled a few notes on her hands... she doesn't use a teleprompter or index cards or anything. she's a normal person who doesn't try to confuse us with a bunch of prepared speeches."

It's the kind of thing that scares me.

Well, if all she had were those few scribbled hand notes then I would view that favorable rather than being notorious for only being able to give an effective speech using TOTUS. I don't pay nearly as much attention to the news as I normally would right now so I haven't really caught any of the Tea Party Convention and really don't have any idea how well she actually delivered her speech. Speaking about technically, not content.

Wrong. See generally Obama's Q&A with the House Republicans.

Wookie, the real problem with her is her lack of political knowledge on a very basic level. She's appealing to the least common denominator of US citizens. She doesn't talk about complicated political stuff because she doesn't know anything about complicated political stuff. She's one of the politicians that doesn't have any answers, she just identifies the problems.

You could say she delivered the speech well is to say she's able to comment on the color of the car she drove to the event in. The biggest problem with Sarah Palin is she's being used as a puppet by some of the more devious conservatives to appeal to people so she can accomplish their goals if ever elected to high office. It's really deceptive, and I would much rather have republicans who actually know issues and understand them than someone like Palin, who doesn't seem to have any idea what she's talking about, and when she comes under criticism, just claims her critics are out to get her because she's a woman.

I would endlessly favor someone like John McCain or even Mitt Romney, who at least have an understanding of the issues facing this country, albeit I don't agree with their solutions.

I hope you understand what I'm talking about here, because as a republican, odds are you should be more pissed about her being the face of the republican party than I am.

You do have a point. He is generally pretty good off TOTUS when he is being deceitful. But when he is cornered with a question to which he has no reasoned response he stutters and stammers in a way that makes Bush sound Shakespearian.

I'm not really going to debate any of your opinions because I really am fairly indifferent to Palin but I do disagree that she is the face of the Republican Party. There is no face. She is one of the faces that are trying to pull the party back to the right and I do like that. I may be a Republican but I am a Conservative first.
