Star Wars in Dubai

French photographer Cedric Delsaux has used Dubai's current economic wasteland as a backdrop to star wars themed images:

You know, that got me thinking.

If we ever got visited by an advanced race, they would probably go there.
Plenty of desert space to land their big ships after being like "oo tall buildings let's go there"

I'm not sure if that's cool and interesting or dumb and weird...

Wait, so is Dubai poor again?

I don't think it'll ever be the amazing tourist location the Dubai government wants it to be. It's sooo damn hot there all the time. Like it's all cool and air conditioned when you are in one of the amazing malls, and then you step outside and it's like getting hit by a bus.
If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.

Never being near any middle eastern country myself, is it all that safe for Americans to be vacationing in places like this? Obviously I know its Dubai and not Baghdad but all the same I am under the impression the anti-western attitude is prevalent throughout all the middle east in certain factions.

Also I was under the impression Dubai's economy was rather plush due to the oil industry and such?

it's safe if you don't act like a jackass. Just be friendly and polite. If you show respect most middle easterners will not bunch you in with those "evil americans."

Also there's a lot of white people in Dubai (other tourists, and europeans who work down there) so you won't stick out like a sore thumb.

So... he just photoshopped some star wars stuff into some images of a crappy area or an unfinished building?

Meh.

Why do they call it 'Start Wars?'

Before they made it to space, when they were just beginning, was Start Wars

Every country has it's bad spots. One should not visit Detroit first and believe that's what the rest of America must be like.

yeah that's true. There's a lot of areas in Dubai that are nicely developed, and in fact some reeaaally incredible malls. Also several las vegas quality hotels. There's also run down or undeveloped or partially developed areas. And that's what the artist seems to have showcased here for the most part.

Vegas is nothing compared to Dubai. I'm talking 120 - 130 degrees and 85 - 90 % humidity in the summer (which is when I was there)

They started all these massive construction projects assuming that the money would keep coming in, but it hasn't, so they've defaulted on their debts, which has shaken investor confidence. It's a major setback, to be sure, but it's not like Dubai and the rest of the UAE is going to start looking like Yemen.

Then again I'll live again in Vegas any day, we'll get maybe a 115 max and only 20% humidity and winters with an average of 40-20 F. Dubai is not for us moderate temperature humans. They can have it.

Not at all, I assumed the same thing until I heard that fact...I think on the History channel or something.

hah yeah. The heat isn't so bad, but when you throw in that high humidity.... It's killer.
