Hell yes indeed

I heard the book is better.

It feels like the cheapest sequel ever... however, it won't matter if the game's fun.

Must wait until it's more... ripe to be picked up. ;)

So far it doesn't feel cheap. Seems just as solid as the original, and looks even better.

Oh what the hell, for the first time in ages I've actually got money to spend on something impulsively.

So, it's a good game but still overrated and nowhere near as good as System Shock 2? :ninja:

BIOSHORT

No actually, it came out at about fourteen hours. I thought I was done when I got the little sister achievement, but the last level is the biggest in the game, unlike the original.

Commence spoiling : What the **** happened to Tenenbaum?

I hate this. Bioshock is NOT System Shock 3. Rate the game on it's own merits.

Would have been able to play yesterday if it weren't for this giant blizzard that delayed my Amazon delivery of the game.

Yeah, that's the problem... it doesn't have any. 90% of it was ripped from SS2, even the story. Just a few bits shifted around, some little sisters and some steampunk. Same formula, only not nearly as good.

How many here people have played SS2? i haven't. i have no desire to.

rate the game on its own, you wouldn't base Halo 3 on Serious Sam when rating it.

That doesn't even make sense. Halo 3 and Serious Sam are two entirely different franchises. The only reason BioShock isn't System Shock 3 is because they couldn't settle on the copyrights. It's a spiritual successor, it's not unreasonable to expect it to live up to its predecessor, especially when it takes the majority of its formula from it.

Bioshock was a videogame - I think we can all agree on that much. It was also a vast idea. Do ideas have sequels? I guess they sort of do. A corollary is a kind of idea-sequel, right? Or is a corollary more like downloadable content? I shouldn't have lead with something like this, maybe.

I don't remember exactly where the critical dialogue on the original Bioshock ended up. Last time I checked, it was considered a black rift in the earth where red devils clawed their way up from hell; a warped creature of great lineage, withered by drink and dissolution. If your apparatus is returning a verdict like that, one that could take all that Bioshock was and deliver this result, I might have it calibrated. If you don't emerge from Bioshock having considered it a net positive, that doesn't make you smarter than other people. All it means is that you've mastered the unique gymnastics required to **** in your own mouth - to dilute your own joy, or the prospect of joy. I don't ever want to be smart enough to learn that trick, and I suspect I'm in no danger. I'm old enough now to settle for the merely great, which I recognize is grotesque and counter-revolutionary.

Reviews of the sequel thus far fall into the expected numerical distribution, primarily on the upper reaches of the scale, but the text often reveals authors in the grasp of a gnawing anguish. As I've suggested before, I delight in this kind of thing: I like it when the machine fails. There's simply too much weight on the scale to get good data. What that means is that we must discover the truth of these things for ourselves, a wholly invigorating prospect.

I got a package today. Made me feel bad for skipping work, even though it was all icy and stuff.

Hey, I think BioShock was fantastic and I'm looking forward to BioShock 2. I just think it's a shame that much of what made System Shock 2 fantastic was left out from BioShock, and I think it was for the worse.

From the little I've played it so far, it seems like BioShock 2 is a lot harder than the first, but it has been a long while since I played the first one. I'm enjoying it quite a bit though. I love the drill, but hate that it uses fuel so quickly, I can usually kill one splicer before I'm half drained on fuel. Maybe it doesn't drain so fast on easy or medium though.

I'm ecstatic to hear they removed the stupid hacking.

Finished it a couple of hours ago. The story was good, and I liked that they brought Andrew Ryan back through audio logs. However, I was hoping for more Fontaine. He and Ryan were the definitive characters from number 1, and while you can throw a rock in the sequel and hit an Andrew Ryan audio log, I could only find two Fontaine diaries. I mean, why even get his voice actor back?

Also, Sofia Lamb wasn't quite the magnetic personality antagonist that Ryan was in the first. I get it: Ryan is free market economy, Lamb is collectivist. Little Sister is an analogue of Big Brother. It's the opposite of game one. That alone does not a memorable villain make. There was only one moment of pure chills I got from her character, near the end.

There's a series of ~10 in Fontaine Futuristics where he talks about Atlas.

There's two tonics that greatly increase fuel efficiency, a research goal that increases all ammo capacity, and damage upgrades that make you need less fuel in the first place.

Anyone else not buying this? I never even finished Bioshock 1, to the plant area, whatever it was called, and got too bored with it. The storyline in the first one was interesting, but I agree with Ars on this one. The first one was decent, but this is just more of the same. If they make another sequel, it's just going to get more and more pointless.

I still need to beat BIOSHOCK eine

I still haven't finished the first... the game lacks something to keep my interest. Someday I'll play it again, or try to.

Thing about the first one, is that yeah, it's kinda like a poor remake of an old game.
Thing about the second one, it isn't....

I played the first one entirely through, and enjoyed it somewhat, but it felt like too much work to finish. I found myself think "I've already put in x number of hours, I may as well finish..." The story was interesting, the characters were fascinating... I dunno. You know how some games have a level or portion that you don't really like, but you have to go through it to finish the game (Feros in ME1, Water Temple in OoT, etc)? That's how most of the first game felt. Not bad, but not very pleasant.

I would certainly not replay the first game, and I don't plan on playing this one.
2010-02-11, 1:44 PM #33
Everything I have seen so far about this game just gives me the impression that it's nothing but Bioshock all over again with small changes in the graphics engine and story. I've got no interest in purchasing it thus far, which is pretty bad considering I actually enjoyed the first one. I just don't want to play it again.

I'm getting the first one off of steam right now. I have never played it before.

I got it through steam for like, $2 or something crazy when they had a deal. IT was definitely worth the money.
For me, the game only seemed boring right near the end, and then the ending sucked (and yes, I got the good ending).
If the second improves upon the first, then it will be great.
