So I just finished season 1 of TNG.

Holy **** this is good, 1x25 "Conspiracy" was an incredibly intense episode full of twists with a good mystery plot, 1x26 set up the Romulans as a new enemy.

I'm hyped, Gonna start season 2 tommorow.
I'm wondering how I should go about this, DS9, Voyager, and TNG ran parallell once right? So should I go through this chronologically? (I.E Watch the episodes that aired that day as they aired, rather then doing all of TNG then all of DS9, etc.)
Is Voyager that bad?

Please do not spoil this for me, it might be hard but please.

Portions of them are parallel, I forget where the overlap begins. You can watch each series through on their own, don't worry about chronology. It's probably best to watch them in the order they aired, which is TNG, DS9 then Voyager. That way any references or overlap are viewed in the order the writers intended.

If you think the first season of TNG is good, you'll find the later episodes to be amazing. I still think Patrick Stewart does some damn good acting in a few of the episodes involving being tortured and helping Spock's father.

I had a close friend who, after seeing the new Star Trek movie, took it upon himself to watch everything (series, animated, and movies) in stardate order (though he watched the Enterprise series last as he felt they'd be making too many references that he wouldn't get beforehand). That took a bit of work on his part, though, because I think he actually did an excel sheet to order them. If you watch them in production/air date order, though, you'll be pretty close to that anyway. From what he told me, watching them like that added a lot for him. If you want, I can see if he can give me the excel to post here.

As for Voyager, I liked it when I first saw it, though now when I watch reruns, a number of the episodes are kind of cringe-worthy. Any episode focusing on the Doctor still rules though. But I actually liked most of Enterprise too, though, which a lot of Trek fans didn't, so you might want to take that with a grain of salt (though the last season of Enterprise is still regarded as pretty good across the board of viewers from what I know).

Oh god I would kill for the excel sheet, I'm far too lazy to do it my self.
I had completely forgotten Enterprise, had the theme stuck in my head though.

I'm currently watching the original series. Working my way through to TNG, then DS9 then Voyager.

I had never seen the episode where Khan makes his debut til recently. It was awesome.

TNG is thought-driven, DS9 is plot-driven, and Voyager is character-driven. Whether you like Voyager is going to depend on whether you can enjoy the antics of the good characters (as Geb said, mainly the Doctor) and tolerate the bad ones. But if you keep Troi in the back of your mind, you'll realize that nothing in Voyager is nearly as bad as it could be.

Probably the simplest thing to do is watch all of TNG, then all of DS9, then all of Voyager. The overlap is minimal enough that you won't be missing much, if anything: DS9 draws a lot on elements set up in TNG, but TNG needs very little from DS9 to make sense. Likewise for Voyager.

Like Geb said, if you liked S01 of TNG, you're going to love the later parts. Season 2 can be pretty awful, though (especially the first and last episodes of the season, which are just abysmal), although there are a couple gems in there. And contrary to what everyone says, Pulaski is a far more awesome doctor than Crusher ever was; it's a shame she was only around for TNG's worst season.

also don't forget to check out the animated series too

First half of TNG aired alone, second half aired with the first half of DS9. After TNG ended, last half of DS9 aired with the first half of Voyager. Then the rest of Voyager.

They are still separate mostly (TNG occasionally references events in DS9 through dialog but nothing required for enjoyment, Voyager's first half is spent without contact with home so no problems there either).

It's said TNG switched over to a longer-arc way of storytelling around the third season or so, basically before then they did mostly one-shot episodes that were complete mini-stories, so that new viewers could jump in and enjoy them, but there was no overarcing continuity other than "exploring strange new worlds". They kept that "jump right in" enjoyability but added overarcing storylines, such as the Borg, which really improved things IMO.

More precisely:

The first episode of DS9 aired between TNG 6x11 and 6x12 (Chain of Command pt 2, Ship in a Bottle.)
The first episode of Voyager aired immediately following the final episode of TNG, during a 5 hour long special presentation that included all of the interviews on the TNG DVDs.

I started watching TNG a couple years ago. It is probably my favorite TV show. I'm just not happy about the 50 gigs it takes up on my external.

Netflix has the original series streaming in HD.

I hadn't watched the original Star Trek series since I was in a tiny little kid (age 3-6) watching reruns with my dad at night when he got home from work at 2am. I started watching it stream in HD with my wife, and am surprised at how crappy it is, how much I remember (20+ years later), and how much both of us still love it.

TNG is my favorite tv series of all time hands down. Without an exaggeration at all, I watch at least one or two episodes a day, usually while I am in bed at night falling asleep.

Brace yourself for Season 2 though. While it's not terrible, it's definitely nothing amazing compared to the other seasons especially. Don't go in thinking Season 2 will be just like the first season, it won't. By far it is the worst of all the seasons and drags the show a bit at times. And forget about a season finale, because as far as anyone that likes trek is concerned, Season 2 doesn't have one. You'll see what I mean when you watch the episode "Shades of Gray".

Seasons 3 and 5 are the best IMO, and 7 is really amazing as well. I love all of them, but if I had to choose those would be the stand out seasons.

I say watch TNG, and forget about all the other Star Trek series so far.

They had TOS Season 1 available for quite a while. They just recently took it away though. They never had season 2 or 3 though I don't think.

I recently watched S01 for the first time as well and while there were some great episodes in there, there were a LOT of bombs. For S2 I plan on watching only the highly recommended episodes, and will resume viewing all episodes in season 3. Well, that is when I get back to Star Trek, I may also be starting BSG.

I believe season 2 has the episode with the court marshal to determine if Data is sentient? That was fantastic.

You can throw the movies in there for good measure too. You can kind of match the times based on what uniform they're wearing. The Voyager uniforms showed up in Generations before they all switched to the grey-shouldered ones in later movies and the end of DS9.

Fun fact about TNG:

The second number in stardates given during the voiceovers at the beginning and during the episodes are the season number that particular episode comes from.

EG Stardate 41356.2 means the episode is from Season 1.
2010-02-11, 10:02 PM #35
Where do the rest of the numbers come from?
Nevermind, wiki says that the writers didn't intend them to make sense except for the purposes of spreadsheets like that.
2010-02-11, 10:24 PM #36
Yeah the rest of them are just jibberish that have little to no meaning at all in the Trek mythos.

See how many times you can spot a Boom mic in the shots or being reflected in the early seasons ;)

In the episode titled "Deja Q" there is a scene where Picard goes to visit Q in the brig. As he enters the door if you look on the ground you can see him accidentally kick one of his actor markers across the floor, it looks like a round ball and goes past the doorway really quickly.
