I'm pissed at PS3 (again)

Yes it is. The 360 is on multiple discs, the video is only 720p versus 1080p, and it's highly compressed. That's the difference apparently. Ingame looks the same supposedly.

I don't think anyone questioned that it'd look good overall though, its that the game apparently removes nearly all choices from the user.

I dunno. I know someone who has played it and they love it.

With the exception of the normal bad reviews anything gets, I have not really read any bad reviews excluding fan boy/girls that didn't get what they wanted.

It's certainly a different FF, but isn't that what new games are supposed to do? Do something different ... instead of repeat the same things over?

It isn't as bad as everyone makes it out to be. The game gets less linear as time goes on. And the battles are something that really gives you more choices than any FF before.

Say what? From what I read, you don't even get to control the other characters, only your own. And that the gameworld only opens up in the final chapter of the game, and the "openness" is simply picking a few linear dungeons to run straight down and defeat a completely non-story-related "Mission" target.

Either way, could probably make a whole thread about FFXIII :P

Also, I wouldnt mind having a PS3... but Im pretty sure GT5 is never coming out so I guess I don't have a reason to get one yet.

You could just get Forza 3 instead. And I'm pretty sure Forza 4 will be out before GT5.

I really want Forza 3 but I have yet to beat Forza 2. For the first time ever Trans Ams are really getting some respect in that game. I bought a wheel but don't have a comfortable way to use it yet. Contemplating building a base for it or maybe buying a chair. I fully intend to someday have a four console, four monitor system to play these games on.

On every disk I've played, I was able to skip trailers by hitting Disc Menu. Make sure it's Disc menu, and not any of the other menu options.

PS3 controller has "top menu" and "pop up menu" not "disk menu." Anyway, the "9" disk doesn't even load far enough to get to any preview unless it has internet.

Brian, seriously, and you know I love you, why do you only seem to have these problems? I could relate with some of your difficulty with XBox Live that one holiday season but other than that all my problems were with my modem or something else on my end. I know you're more tech savvy than most of us so, what the hell?

Forget Forza 2. Get all the achievements and then throw it away. You'll never play it again once you get Forza 3. Seriously. It's infinitely more awesome.

BEST ASPECT OF FORZA 3: Remember how in Forza 2 if you upgraded the nuts off of a car it eventually reached U level and became useless in anything except about 5 events? This problem is gone in Forza 3. When you pass S level, you just go into the R3 level, then R2, etc... You can also perform moderate upgrades on the race cars that come with the game like taking the restrictor plate off to give you more hp.

Yeah, I'm more likely going to get Forza 3. GT5 wins for having the Top Gear test track... but forza is actually out

I know, it's also that I have many games I've not even started or scratched the surface of. Until I get a comfortable way to play with the wheel, I'm not bothering with 3. I definitely know it's an upgrade though.

It's the rare case of a sequel in a sports game that is WAAAAAAAAAY better than any of the previous titles.

Only half-assed. They just get loose bumpers and doors, doesn't affect performance and the cars still bounce off the walls.

Heh, I never grew out of the need to have cars smash eachother either.
I remember complaining in grade school about GT3 not having damage.

Try as I may, I cannot get through a GTA game. I tried GTA:SA and GTA4. I know people who have 100% on GTA:SA. It must have taken them months.

Wasn't that an early test video like 2 years ago?
nope.

It might have been, but it was confirmed that it was all you were going to get.

Considering my PS3 isn't connected to the internet, this probably would have promted me to call netflix, and whoever else it took for me to exhaust my hate upon.

My xbox live seems to be working lately (past month or so). We use it for netflix streaming now because it's faster than the ps3 disk and the ps3 disk loses our places in movies a lot of the time (roku and xbox save your place when you stop in the middle of a movie -- ps3 says they do it, and they report that they will "resume" you, but then they start the movie at the beginning -- and fast-forwarding in netflix streaming isn't pleasant).

I have a fundamental problem with sony not allowing a "permanently disable without constantly prompting" setting for BD LIVE internet content. This isn't a technical issue. They make it really, really hard to keep disks from accessing the internet (you basically have to go through an extra screen every time you load a disk, and if you ever allow a disk to connect to the internet, it allows every subsequent disk to access the internet, until you drill back down into the settings and change it back). This is especially hard when you have multiple people in the household accessing the ps3. It would be easy enough for them to have the "confirm" setting as it is now, but when you choose to allow a disk, instead of changing the global setting, just allow that one disk.

The technical issue with the "9" disk and BD LIVE and black screens on that disk only, well, other people are having that problem, too (as I mentioned in a previous post) -- there are discussions about it at amazon.com (I would typically research this further, but searching for "9" in google isn't helpful).

That sucks for the PS3 then. That's how I skip all that junk on my PC and bluray player.
2010-02-15, 11:01 AM #65
I've never had a single blu-ray where Next Chapter didn't let me skip a trailer... I forget what button it is on the PS3 controller (I use a Logitech Harmony remote), but I think it's either R1 or R2.
2010-02-15, 4:20 PM #66
My only real problem with Xbox 360 is that I wish you could set a button combination password to confirm purchases. I prefer to leave my console connected to Live for Netflix and streaming videos from my PC (yes, for some reason MP4s won't play unless I'm connected to Live) but that means when my boy is playing if he hits some menu with optional content he can easily make purchases.

BTW, there is another Bluray player on Amazon Gold Box today and this one plays and upscales VHS! I'm tempted simply for the few collector's editions I have on VHS that I don't want to part with along with many kids films.

Wow, upscaling VHS! That must look AMAZING!

Better off just transferring them to DVD before they literally rot away.
2010-02-15, 9:00 PM #68
I agree but I read that a trick to bypass macrovision is to run a VCR through a digital camcorder to the PC. I don't have a functional VCR anymore so this unit might work nice for that. Also, like I said, I have plenty of kids tapes so it would be okay for that. I know low res upscaled still isn't hd but some of the reviews for the device basically say it takes them from crap to watchable.

I've never had any problems with my PS3, at all. Like, ever. It's been a while now since I've had it (80GB PS2 compatible model), and it works like a charm. I've never once had an issue with it.

Seems, Brian, that you're similar to my father, but your issue is with consoles rather than a PC. Seems no matter what PC, what configuration and network, my dad manages to screw **** up and run into problems, same as you seem to do a lot for consoles. Not that you screw **** up, just saying that problems few come across, you come across daily. Just bad luck I suppose :(.
