So what do you guys think of the opening ceremony so far? Vancouver has a lot of live up to after what the Chinese did in Beijing.

Hmm, should turn that on. Sucks that the guy died on the luge earlier, though.

Opera lady singing the Olympic hymn. One of the few contraltos you'll hear, great dress, big voice. All I could think was "Jesus, look at that! Her breaths are WAY too shallow! Ms Flory would kill me if she saw me breathing like that!"

So I'm basically scarred for life from my days as a music student.
Fincham: Where are you going?
Me: I have no idea
Fincham: I meant where are you sitting. This wasn't an existential question.

It's really tragic. Such a young person with great aspirations.

Yeah, it's terribly sad what happened to that poor guy. I feel so bad for him and his family.

I thought the opening ceremony was awesome, I'm really amazed to see the patriotism that's come out in Canadians for these games too.

I thought they all looked like they were lip syncing. Could've just been the coverage here in NZ though.

I had to work tonight but I saw most of it on our tv's. Its such an exciting time to live in the Vancouver area. It sucks to get around anywhere with the traffic, but hopefully I'm going to try and make it in to Vancouver in the next little while, just to see some of the sites, I don't have the money to see any events though.

Nelly and the guy were, the whole fiddling/tap dancing bit was, but as far as I could tell that was it.

Also, I really liked the projector system, that was pretty cool.

They played the footage on the news this morning. They warned me that graphic footage was coming less than a second before it happened. Now my day is ruined. Thanks NBC!

P.S. I feel pretty bad for the people that knew the guy & anyone that had to watch it on television.
? :)

Megaprops to nbcolympics.com video designers. They added a "boss" button below the video player that pauses the video and throws up a blank excel spreadsheet. I lol'ed.

What an awful opening ceremony. I feel bad for some of those provinces being "celebrated" with some one dude flying around the stadium with a bunch of wheat fields under him.

I didn't get to see the ceremony. However, I did catch a review of it on the news & the whales swimming under the ice effect looked awesome. North Korea would probably put on the best olympic opening ceremony.
? :)

I didn't watch most of it - all I saw was the opera lady and I don' think she was lip singing.

Nelly Furtado and Bryan Adams were lip syncing. The entire routine with the dancing/fiddles was an actual performance as was the opera and Sarah Mclaughlan. Those people actually have talent. And Bryan Adams. :hist101:

You could tell when they switched the audio back and forth during the Nelly/Bryan Adams sequence.

His mother also was carrying the Olympic flag on.

each of the represented provinces / regions were done by people from those areas. Why there's a Peter Pan flying over wheat to represent the prairie provinces is beyond me.

I caught the end of it and it looks pretty good. Hurrah for the winter olympics, which I prefer to the regular olympics. :P

Indeed.

We don't really have a 'winter' in Australia

Chances are we'll still manage to win a medal or two though, cos you know, we're awesome at sport.

Poor Canada can't get a break. Just got smoked in Women's Mogul by USA in qualifying.

The Canadian chick was obviously holding back quite a bit, just doing enough to get through qualifying.
