What is this, some other reality?

Google Chrome, as I now see it after arriving from work (and this is for other pages as well).

Posting from Firefox.

According to the internets, "that gibberish is the font system complaining that it can't find any glyphs for the characters on the page."

That's not gibberish, nor a font system issue. The text you see is the javascript code that is meant to run on the Google homepage. Check and make sure javascript is turned on, clear your cache, restart the browser.

Install any extensions recently? Sounds like you need to reinstall at that point.

But the question that worries the generation is, "What happened?"

Thanks for your help, btw.

No idea, but based on your last screenshot, it's not rendering properly whatsoever. Even with javascript off it shouldn't appear like that.

Reinstall chrome?

Make sure JS, Cookies, Images, Plugins are all always on in the new Content Settings dialog if you're using Chrome 5. It doesn't work quite right (it blocks internal pages) so you have to leave them on. Next Dev build should fix it.

If that doesn't work or doesn't apply to you, back up your profile, clear everything, and if that fixes it restore the old profile and delete files one by one until it fixes, then restore again except for that one file. Then you'll keep as much of your profile as possible.

Otherwise export bookmarks, wipe your profile and uninstall Chrome, and reinstall and reimport your bookmarks.
