New Steam UI

(If you don't know how to get to it, under settings- Account there is a dropdown list marked "Beta" select "UI Beta".

I like it, it's very slick. The new games list is great too.
Bit too many gradients for my taste though. And not enough green.
Oh man wait, it doesn't use IE anymore. :master:

Hmm, I have a rather nice Steam skin (Obsidian and Obsidian Orange), will it still work? Is it just a new skin?

The default Steam skin is awful. The one I use is mostly black/gray (with orange highlights for that version), very clean and professional.

No, it's an entire new UI.

I like it. :(
nope.

I thought the old was OK, but it was a bit utilitarian.

I don't like it. More stuff of things I don't care about, and more integration with the stupid IE browser. Don't they get that IE sucks, and for a UI that should be responsive, using a web browser like IE does not do it? >.>
2010-02-23, 6:33 PM #7
I think they're appealing to the lowest common denominator, since IE comes installed on people's computers in the fuсkt place.

EDIT:

I mean first

It doesn't use IE.

Presumably they used IE in the beginning because embedding IE is stupid easy. To get it working in 3D environments all they'd have to do is copy the GDI buffer to the framebuffer or such.

Sure as hell feels and looks like IE to me >.>

YES!!!! THEY FINALLY ADDED CATEGORIES!!!
WOOOOOO!!!!!!

Oh man, you have no idea how long I've been waiting to do more then just have "starred" and "not starred"
Finally I can have puzzle, fps, rpg and all those things (and yes, I have a large amount of steam games)
You can't judge a book by it's file size

Oops, the skin isn't Obsidian, it's Slate Orange.

Wow, definitely liking the new UI. It's fairly similar to Slate as well. So glad they finally got rid of that horrible, flat green ****.

Genre, And Series are what I'm doing.
I'm gonna have alot of OCDing to do.

Don't get too involved with it yet. I restarted steam and all the categories I had were gone.

Goddamn.
Thanks for the heads up.

I like it!

I tried to use it and now my Steam won't even start. I just get an error message about not being able to connect to the Steam networks every time I try to start it and it closes itself. And let me tell you, its really annoying cause I can't even login to try and change settings back. Steam is completely inaccessible for me right now.
Life is beautiful.

Only just now I'm getting trouble trying to install a game (steam servers are too busy right now) so perhaps that's related.

Well, that at least explains the friend's list shenanigans.

I THOUGHT I WAS ALL ALONE AGAIN OH GOD
Hey, Blue? I'm loving the things you do. From the very first time, the fight you fight for will always be mine.

Wrong, it uses Webkit now :awesome:

Also you can reject invites directly from Steam now :awesome:

Anyone who has problems with the browser not working (like me), go into Internet Options and turn off Automatically detect proxy settings.

Yeah, I used to have trouble with the browser in old steam, new steam browser works much better (I can actually buy stuff in there without having to open a page in chrome)

I tried the new browser through the in-game UI, and it's perfectly fluid and responsive. Steam really has become just an astoundingly good platform.

I just switched and restarted Steam - now the 'updating' window comes up and then says 'cannot contact steam servers, try again later'.

...

Edit: Tried a couple more times and it finally worked. It looks pretty cool so far.
woot!
2010-02-24, 5:41 AM #25
I tried the browser in the game UI, and while the browser itself was responsive, I couldn't even get the window to close when I was done. The X did nothing.
2010-02-24, 6:43 AM #26
Crashes a bit often for me. (Constantly.)
Looks great though.

I am having the same problem. How long does this usually take?

I'm kinda regretting trying the beta on a whim.

I just kept trying and it suddenly worked at random.

Emon: Yes, go to the same area where you selected the beta and turn it off.

The font reminds me of Zune...

Calling it now: Zune/Steam/XBL integration in the future.

I was gonna turn it on, then it tried to update TF2 while I'm downloading some free mmo and I had to kill the process. Also, I won't have internet again until Monday. ****.

I could care less if steam looked like a standard windows 98 box... as long as it FUNCTIONS. (I get a lot of startup crashes still)
