What is the point of Full Screen DVDs?

Who buys Full Screen versions of DVDs? I thought the demand on Wide Screen version would be much more than Full Screen due to the distortion in some movies in FS. I mean, at my local movie rental store, popular movies leaves WS versions to be taken first. Then the people who come later have to settle for FS versions. Why would the movie rental place even feature so many FS for a popular title?

I'm not a terribly picky and meticulous, but I notice that certain movies that are projected on the whole screen, at times, just does not look good. Maybe some television shows and animation DVDs don't look bad that way, but major movies do.

But I assume FS DVDs continue to sell. Maybe some advantage?

Some people like it to fill up the whole screen, even if it distorts the picture. Take my father for instance..

My dad zooms in 2x, so he misses almost everything in the movie. I swear he and I cannot watch movies together. I can't stand anything but widescreen.

I'm the same way. Actually my mom had gone and bought a movie the other day I had to explain not to get full screen. Wide just looks better. Almost all my dvd's are widescreen. Only 2 or 3 arent.

On a lot of blocky TVs, widescreen pretty much cuts away half of the picture. I honestly don't understand why people get so worked up over this. Most fullscreen DVDs are specifically designed to offer the best possible camera angle in any given situation. A lot of people *gasp* just want watch the movie and probably, on casual viewing, hardly notice the difference anyway. It's a tradeoff between loosing some side action or being forced to observe a miniature version of the picture on screen.

Not really. You don't miss much at all unless your TV is tiny--my friend's 15" for example.

See my parents watch it on a 62" big screen, so I don't understand it. And you'd be surprised how much you miss in the fullscreen versions of movies.

Widescreen all the way. I don't care if I get a smaller picture on a smaller TV. Of course, this might be because I've taken to watching DVDs in my room since I have 5.1 back here and a DVD player in my PC.

But yeah, there are movies where Widescreen is the ONLY format you should ever get. Lord of the Rings for example. Bladerunner would be another. 2001: A Space Odyssey. All movies that shouldn't be seen in ANYTHING but Widescreen.

If you have a small TV, buy the widescreen version and hit the "zoom" button on your DVD remote. That way when you get a big, nice widescreen TV you can watch it without hitting zoom.

Usually those black bars aren't noticable during the movie (for me.) Hmm.

So true! I make sure all the LOTR dvd's I purchase are widescreen.

as for the black bars I tend to forget they are there. When you get into a movie they just seem to blend and you dont even notice them anymore, at least I dont.

Well I, personally, don't mind at all watching movies in full screen. It's really such a small difference that it's not even worth thinking about (again, "personally.")

However, when purchasing DVDs myself, I would generally prefer widescreen, if only for that tiny feeling of getting more for my dollar, since they're the same price.

But really, it's a small preference. There are some movies I'd rather watch in certain formats though, for reasons...I probably couldn't explain. Back to the Future, for instance, will always be meant for full screen, in my mind at least. Royal Tenenbaums, and all Wes Andersen movies for that matter, must obviously be watched in wide screen.

But other than those handful of exceptions, it's really not a big deal for me.

(...If you were wondering.)

Hicks like Full-Screen because they paid so much dern money for a tv that they're gonna use all of it. I used to work at Best Buy and that's what people would say. Intelligence = -9.

I will only purchase wide-screen.

If you even looked at the pictures, you could tell that one is Widescreen and one is Full Screen. The Widescreens more show MORE OF THE PICTURE. If you were more observant, you would've noticed it. Look at the picture of Galadriel and the other elf holding the ring. Notice how in the widescreen there is another elf to the let, that is totally unseen in the 4:3 version.

Either way, I don't mind how the picture's layed out, because it's not exactly large on my wonky fourteen inch. Plus, I've got no room (or money) to buy a larget tele to experience the benifits of widescreen. Ah well.
You'll see it's all a show, keep 'em laughing as you go. Just remember that the last laugh is on you.

I like my widescreen Laptop. Hmm

But yes, FullScreen movies are pointless. I don't know why it's taken DVD's to get into the Full Screen motion though, I recall watching more than one movie on VHS that was widescreen. I can't remember what movies they are though.. but they had em.

A friend told me the best way to prove the point of WS: Ask someone for a $10 bill, stretch it out in front of them and say "This is widescreen." Proceed to tearing off the sides of the bill and say "This is full screen."

And in the process you miss half the movie cause they cut if off. Go watch a movie at your theatre, sit in the front. Take both your hands and put them to your face so you can't see anything on the film to the left or right, that is full screen.

At my video store they only have movies in wide screen for the new releases. Older movies depends, but if you went there and rented any new DVD, its wide screen only.

I liked it more though when DVDs use to put both wide screen and full screen on the DVDs.
I can't think of anything to put here right now.

Wide-screen. I will never go back. When the Star Wars Special Edition came out, I suddenly noticed how key things are cut out of the frame to fit the main thing... like the AT-AT pilots. I had never seen them up until I watched ESB in Widescreen.

Well I don't think it's THAT drastic...I mean, when you watch a movie in full screen you really don't MISS anything that is absolutely necessary for the movie to make sense...

I mean, say you watch...I don't know, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, on TBS or something, and it's in full screen. If someone asked you if you'd seen that movie, you wouldn't say "Well, I've seen about half of it," would you?

I don't know...the best analogy I can think of at the moment is listening to a song without the bass guitar track. You still get the whole song, you get the lyrics and the solo and all that important stuff, but it just seems more complete with that bass. In fact, you probably wouldn't even notice the bass being gone, until someone told you.
