Heavy Rain

Well, I finished it yesterday. Impressive game, I have to say. The story towards the end has you yelling at your screen every time you make a mistake. The best part, is talking with other people who have played it. Everyone seems to experience it in some other way... One of my friends killed off a main character, while mine never even got into the place his was....

Graphically, the faces and lip-sync are really impressive, the models and animations are slightly above standard. My only real complaints were occasional clipping or the command buttons being hidden behind objects.

Anyone else playing it?

It was pretty good. There was one massive plothole left unexplained that really bugged me. I'm definitely going to play through it again to go about stuff at a completely different way.

Seriously, why does Ethan always wake up from his blackouts with an origami figure in his hand? He's obviously not the killer, so where is he getting these figures from during his blackouts? Is Shelby following him around and putting figures in his hand?
2010-02-26, 9:05 AM #3
Yeah, that and the fact that there was no blue 1983 chevy that the killer was driving.

I think some of this stuff will be patched in on DLC. Sadly.

I tried the demo and the mechanics really didn't float my boat.

I don't really consider it a game, its more of an interactive movie. Kinda like those books you used to read as a kid that would have you turn to different pages based on decisions you want the character to make.

Yeah either that or it's all expected to just be written off as stuff Shelby did to throw people off the trail and they didn't feel like elaborating on any of it.

Yeh, I used to love those. Its the controls and the constant "press x, press square, half-spin left joystick, press triangle, shake controller, piss your pants, touch your nose, scratch your rear, hold L1 and press X, watch character choke, press R2!"

I'm not big for the Simon Says crap.

Of course, now I spoiled the killer's name for myself reading the spoilers here so I probably killed a big part of the excitement in the story.

Haha isn't that all any game is? See opponent, press fire, dodge bullets, press right, throw grenade, left trigger! Take cover, space space space!!!!

I generally despise quicktime event sequences in games. Heavy Rain is pretty different though. It's not "press this button in this amount of time or the game's over and you restart". You only ever get one chance to do things, and if you **** up it may be as insignificant as not dodging a punch from someone, or as significant as someone dieing and the story being altered completely because of that.

And then there are split second decisions it throws at you sometimes where you barely have time to think about what you want to do and just have to react. They did a very good job with the tense situations they put you in, especially the closer you get to the end.

I really enjoyed the scene where you have to drive against traffic in the rain. I imagine that's about how nerve racking it would be.

The gameplay sounds a lot like The Indigo Phrophecy (or Farenheit as it was called in other countries) is this correct? cause that game was awesome. too bad this isnt coming to PC...

I think The Indigo Prophecy was made by the same company as Heavy Rain.

Well, you're not TOLD what to do. What bothers me is the Simon Says gameplay, not the fact that I'm pressing buttons. Of course you press buttons to play a game.

As was an older game I rather enjoyed called Omikron: The Nomad Soul. Unfortunately it no longer works on my modern video card. :(

Anyway quantic dream makes great games when they're not bankrupt.

I want to play this but I don't own a PS3. :(

Yep. I hear die-hard adventure gaming fans will love it.

Omikron was pretty sweet.

If the fighting and shooting parts weren't so mediocre it would have done a lot better.
2010-02-26, 5:34 PM #22
I hear the game comes with a little piece of paper, and then the loading screen tells you how to do some origami.

I don't have a PS3, but there's now quite a load of PS3 exclusive titles that are making me consider it. Damn you marketers and your cunning tricks!

Nope, the whole game is completey realistic, more or less. There's some futuristic technology, but that's about it.
2010-02-26, 7:47 PM #26
I could have sworn when I read about this game month's ago in Game Informer that it was also to be on the 360. Drat.
2010-02-28, 5:40 PM #27
Good. I also noticed the futuristic technology from the forensic sun glasses and the forensic power glove.

It uses 6 axis motion control, sort of wii-style, where you flick the controller up or shake it to make it do stuff. I didn't even know the PS3 controller could do this, I don't know of any other games that use this function, but I'm not sure if the 360 controller could do this.

The ARI (Glasses and Glove) that the FBI agent wears aren't really all that unrealistic. I'd bet we could make those today, but they'd be obsurdly expensive... UV/Infared specs, with an online database connection to identify samples on the fly... whew.

Well, the fingerprint and DNA analysis is pretty unrealistic. That still requires a vast series of laboratory analysis and synthesis and can only match against DNA currently held in DNA databases. The scientific equipment is certainly not going to become simple enough to become hand-held (let alone hidden in glasses) any time soon, and the legal framework to hold everyone's DNA in a database - while certainly a current issue right now - will take a long time to change, and even longer to implement.

While the tech is Heavy Rain is somewhat plausible in principle, it certainly isn't within the timeframe where it is set (a few years in the future?). More importantly, however, the augmented reality setting on Mars is really ****ing cool.

Yeah, parts of it are reasonable, but other parts like the on-the-fly DNA analysis are pretty unrealistic right now.

I think you guys forget how many problems could be solved with a budget that has no ceiling... lol

Was that environment supposed to be Mars? It had at least two close moons/planets in it's view.

I'm going to have to commandeer my friends PS3 for this experience. It sounds like I'd be stupid to miss it.

That you would. I'm taking my PS3 over to a friends house tonight for a group play. It'll be fun to see how their choices differ from mine, and effect the story.

It's a game that is really fun just to watch. It's not really a computer game in the normal sense, more of an interactive movie. It has a lot of very clever set pieces, they're taking a lot of the fairly basic moviemaking techniques for building tension and empathy and applying it into a computer game. When you deconstruct the scenes, you'll see that they're just sort of using what Hollywood has learnt over the last 50 years and none of that is strictly original - but it's all put together fantastically well.

What it really has in spades is emotional realism. There's a scene where you talk to a woman in early stages of Alzheimer's and I found that really unsettling and quite uncomfortable, because they've done it so subtly and quite accurately (within the limits of the mechanics of the game, obviously). I actually didn't like that at all, it really hit a difficult emotional point.

Haha I thought for sure I was going to fail the game after that happened, didn't know at that point that it always happens.

I lost 3 characters because I am incompetent with the playstation controller. Stupid circles and triangles. The ending was absolutely heart breaking for me.
