Looking at phones...
2010-02-26, 1:24 PM #1
My and my fiancee are working at deciding what phones to get. we are thinking smartphones, and both of us hate blackberries, and believe that iPones are too expensive for us. Alternatively, we're looking at semi-smartphones like the LG enV Touch.

our choices include the Droid Eris, the Samsung Impression/mythic/solstice, the LG enV touch as mentioned or something similar to any of those phones

so i'm looking for peoples opinions on these phones, or other suggestions. we will probably go with verizon since 90% of the people we call are on verizon, although she wishes to stay with at&t because she's been with them for 10 years. it has been a pain even to convince her to consider switching.

If you're interested in the Droid Eris, you may want to check out the Nexus One. This is the phone I'll be getting when it comes out in the UK.

the enV touch is awful. I only tried it at the store, but i hated it. A few friends have the droid eris and they really like it. Sure the Droid is more powerful, but the Eris is still up there. I also think the Nexus One is coming to verizon soon.

yeah, i really want a nexus one but i cant get past the 600$ price tag it has without a contract. and its comparable to an iphone 3gs with a contract right now. (ie, the 200$ range) see she really wants an iphone, but doesnt want to spend that much on a phone. i thought the eris was a nice compromise. we cant justify that kind of money for phones right now. also since the eris will be getting updated to the droid 2.1 software sometime soon i thought it would be a good choice.

in my opinion, you either go high end or not at all. Sounds like your budget might be better off with a featurephone. If you can't afford the phone price you definitely can't afford their much higher plan prices with data.
2010-02-26, 6:23 PM #6
Yeah, I bought a £300 pay-as-you-go Sony Ericsson about 5 years ago and it still works wonderfully well - to the point where I probably don't need a new phone any time soon. I really want a Nexus One, but I'll certainly wait for a while after it's released here before I decide whether to buy or not.

Choosing a phone is pretty difficult for me as I know that I'll be using it for the best part of the next decade before I get another, and this is something I think a lot of tech journalists forget. They get a lot of phones sent to them for review, so they'll have a new phone every month or so - and so can compare and contrast specifications accurately, but rarely the long-term usability.

I have a business account with ATT, so every year I can get a new phone for free. Almost any phone.

If you ever used symbian os then you will feel right at home. Otherwise you might want to slam your head or the phone against the wall.

But having said that, I think at $260, this phone is very hard to beat feature by feature, especially when its unlocked too. Recently, Nokia just announced their navigation subscription to be free for life. This is about a 300-400 dollar value as all Nokia GPS equipped phones works offline and has voice turn by turn that even reads out street names, take traffic and weather in the route calculation process, and as well POI functionality. Also, the phone has a resistive screen. The most sensitive of its kind, but its not capacitive. So that might be a con for you.

I personally own a Motorola Droid and it is dead even with an iPhone 3gs in literally every aspect except for two. One being the dedicated gpu of the iPhone, and two being the user friendly apple interface as opposed to a still incredibly user friendly android operating system. Otherwise the phones are exactly identical, right down to most apps for each as well.

The nexus one is scheduled to be released some time this spring. I'd imagine with its release the Droid will come down in price significantly and you will be able to buy one without the $200 pricetag. I would hold off on the Eris, as it has its fair share of bugs and is known to lag a bit.

Just my two cents on the matter, take itvor leave it. :)
2010-02-26, 8:53 PM #13
The Droid has the same CPU/GPU as the iPhone 3GS...
2010-02-26, 9:01 PM #14
Yes but a friend of mine who writes apps for the iPhone explained to me that the iPhone has a dedicated gpu which is why it always scrolls so smoothly. Whether or not that is BS, its an obvious edge over the Droid. Don't get me wrong, the Droid scrolls very smoothly with almost everything but the iphone will always have the edge over the competition there.
2010-02-26, 9:20 PM #15
iphones are pretty garbage if you live in a major city :ninja:

2010-02-26, 9:21 PM #16
Uh, yeah, no. It's the same exact GPU in both, a PowerVR SGX. It's part of the Cortex A8 platform that both of them use. It's also the same as what you'd find in the Pre, and probably a few other phones.

The only reasons it doesn't scroll as smoothly is probably:
A. The iPhone doesn't multitask (not significantly) so it has less things to cause jitter.
B. "Better" coding job.

Although it's not a phone (YET), ZuneHD has far smoother scrolling and UI in general than even the iPhone, so this is nothing Apple has a stranglehold over.

I'm certainly not going to get into a pissing contest with you over this, considering I am a new member to these boards, however I texted him just now and this was his exact wording:

"The daemon of the OS on the iPhone runs as a dedicated process with full, direct access to the GPU."

Take it as you will, I've said enough on the subject. I will simply agree to disagree and leave it at that ;)
2010-02-26, 9:52 PM #18
That really doesn't make any sense. The OS is not a daemon. The OS is the OS, and like all OSes that aren't being virtualized, it has direct access to ALL of its hardware.

What he might mean is native development on the Android, but there exists such development nowadays anyway, so it is irrelevant.

I don't know why you're talking about a pissing contest either, as I am simply stating 100% fact here. Really, go look at the Wikipedia pages for the devices yourself and compare. It's not a mystery :/
2010-02-26, 9:58 PM #19
Ah, well you know what I mean, no hard feelings mate.

I prefer the Droid over the iPhone any day of the week anyway.

I would recommend waiting until the new iPhone is released before you make your decision. It's rumored that it'll come out some time in April or May. I think it's worth noting that the newest iPhones came out close to a year ago (June 19, 2009) & that there will likely be significant improvements (rumors include 4G, dual-core processor, OLED screen, 5mp camera w/ LED flash, 802.11n support & a superior graphics processor). The truth is, most of the phones mentioned here are good & you'll probably be happy w/ any of them but there's simply no reason to rush out & buy something when something newer & possibly better is about to be announced. It's sort of like buying a 2010 car & then finding out a month later that the 2011 version was released & it's better.
? :)
2010-02-27, 5:05 AM #22
What's the point in a dual core processor when you can only run one app at a time?
Bassoon, n. A brazen instrument into which a fool blows out his brains.
2010-02-27, 5:21 AM #23
The rumored processor is the ARM dual-core Cortex A9 apparently.

http://www.electronista.com/articles/09/06/16/dual.core.a9.and.iphone/

Quote:
ARM has teased the future of the iPhone and other smartphones with added early details for its first dual-core mobile processor design. The Cortex A9 will shrink the manufacturing process from the 65 nanometers used on the single-core Cortex A8 used in the iPhone 3G S to 45 nanometers, letting it add the extra core without significantly affecting the power draw. Although it consumes more energy at peak, the smaller process and multiprocessing should ultimately lead to longer battery life.
The design also better handles executing out-of-order instructions than the A8 and can therefore handle a large batch of code more efficiently. A9 can scale up to four cores but is less likely to be used for smartphones in the near future.

Multiple cores better supports multitasking on those phones with supporting operating systems but would also allow for more efficient background processing, such as encoding a video or playing audio without affecting a user's existing tasks.

Importantly, the launch of A9 should also line up for the next wave of smartphones. ARM anticipates the technology being in shipping products by approximately this time next year. Texas Instruments has explained that its future OMAP 4 processor will use A9's technology and hints at sequels to the OMAP 3-based Palm Pre getting the more advanced processor. OMAP 4 will have multiple cores and should also have faster graphics built into the processor package, including 1080p decoding and encoding as well as 20-megapixel still image processing and support for larger displays.

Samsung is believed to make the Cortex A8 processor used in the iPhone 3G S, but its role in future iPhones is uncertain. Apple is actively recruiting for future Cortex programming and is therefore likely to support A9 technology, but its acquisition of PA Semi for the purposes of designing custom ARM chips suggests that future iPhones, possibly as early as next year, will have Apple-developed processors and won't be tied to roadmaps from others. Yeah, but you could continue doing this for years and years continually anticipating something better in the immediate future and never actually getting anything. When the new iPhone is released, you could then wait for the Nexus Two.

well we are also taking into consideration in the price of phones that we will be buying bundle packages of headsets car chargers and cases, which basically amounts to an extra 100$ over the price of the phones. we're willing to spend 150 each on a phone, but not 250 each...

also, i've read a lot of reviews about the eris, and peoples major complaint about it is that it doesnt have android 2.0 but it was announced earlier this month that the eris will be updated to the 2.1 software by the end of march. although hearing that the nexus one will be coming to verizon soon is definately good news to hear.

I would agree w/ you if it was more than a few months off or if another big announcement was scheduled soon after this one but I get your point. I put off buying an eBook reader because of the announcements that were supposed to come in January & then the iPad was announced & now I'm waiting to see how that turns out & it's starting to look like I'm caught in an endless cycle.

My humble opinion, at least on this topic, is that all of these various smartphones are such a ridiculously expensive luxury that most of the people that have them, shouldn't. Don't get me wrong, I like the phones and I was considering an HTC Imagio awhile back but $200 for a device and then adding $30 a month to my bill just to be able to use it would have been idiotic for me. Now, if I could skip adding the data access to my plan then I would have gone for it as I was looking to replace my dead PDA. As it is, I wisely decided not to purchase it and ended up getting a free after rebate Samsung Intensity that I am mostly happy with. I don't text much (mostly because I don't want to pay more for a different plan) but the included keyboard makes it easy for me to make the calendar usable. Saved my butt the other day from missing a dentist appointment. I guess I should research if it can sync with Outlook. Later I ended up finding a fairly well rated Dell x51v PDA in a pawn shop. It would be nice to have an all in one device but it's also nice to have a phone that's just a phone.

I like Verizon. They may be more expensive than some of the other companies but the wide coverage area is good when I'm on the road or what not. Ford, why does your fiancee want to stay with AT&T? Is it just because she's had them for 10 years or has the service been wonderful the entire time? If it's the latter then have her call them up and explain that she's considering leaving but might be tempted to stay if they cut you a break on a combined plan for the two of you. Otherwise, cut and run to the company that is going to give you the best value.

The Droid is probably out of your price range but I'd consider it. Android 2.1 is supposed to be out soon...it should have been all ready but I'm of the opinion that Verizon is holding back. Anyway, Android 2.1 is supposed to bring more functionality like pinch-zoom. Actually Android 2.0(.1) supports this all ready (those of you with Droids update your Google Maps) but I think Verizon nerfed it. I'm not sold on Verizon relinquishing its ways of not being control freaks over phones. I think Verizon is trying to control the Droid somehow.

Anyway, I digress. I got my sister the Droid Eris when I got my Droid (promotional offer) and she seems to like it. She's not sophisticated enough to care whether it's on Android 1.5 or not.

Nerdatry: I jailbroke my Droid and installed a modified version of Android 2.0.1. It has some UI changes and incorporates some 2.1 features.

Just go to Amazon or somewhere to get the accessories you need. I picked up a case, screen protector, car and home charger for about $15. All seem to be working fine so far.

Does that have Windows Mobile 5 on it? I recently found my old Dell Axim x50v in a drawer and had entirely forgotten what a fantastic device it was, though it runs Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition which is pretty slow at syncing and write speed (though read speed is pretty fast, bizarrely). What do you think about the x51v? Specifically, what's the OS like? I don't think I can install WM5 on the x50v :(

To me there doesn't seem to be really noticeable differences between the OSs but I was without a PDA for awhile so I kind of had to refresh myself on some things. I don't know if it is the battery in the device or how I have the settings adjusted but the battery runs down fairly quick under use. There are references to an Activesync glitch but I don't think that is my problem. I have ordered another battery from Amazon so we'll see how that one fairs. You may be able to update the OS. I found references to putting 6 on the 51. There is even a youtube video documenting it. Supposedly doing so enables full support of SDHC but I don't know as I only saw one post somewhere referring to that.

Pinch gestures work well on my maps as well as Dolphin Browser. I would, however like to root my phone as you have in order to overclock it a bit. I'm just nervous to, plus I like android how it is, I don't think I'd me making any major UI changes. I would like some more home screens though.
