What's it mean when you start receiving emails that appear to be from friends........

Who are claiming to be stuck in the UK with not money and needing 1200 pounds or some BS like that? My mom get one of these emails and is asking me for help and I'm like "**** idk use gmail"

Is it her computer? Or is something infecting the sender's computer? PS she's accessing her sbcglobal email address with Outlook Express.

I heard that's like a spam attack she needs popup blocker. But seriously, that's spam and she can delete it and block their e-mails in the future without fear.

I normally wouldn't worry about it, but the emails seem to be coming from her friend's email address.

Well whatever you do, don't send the money. I've heard about this happening to a few people.

Can you post a header for one of these e-mails if she doesn't mind? Like TE said, her friend might be the one with the problem.

Thanks

I just want to make sure it's not on our end. The other person is using Yahoo Mail. I'll see what more info I can get....

Make a phone call. Phone calls don't get worms OR spam!

Big deal. I could send you an e-mail that looks like it came from the pope. You cannot be certain about the sender's identity being authentic without using some form of certs or encryption to verify it. Technical users may be able to trace the e-mail's delivery path to determine if it's likely to have come from the sender, but it's not something Joe Average can or would want to do.

And of course if it is from the friend's e-mail address there is no guarantee she actually sent it. I find it more likely it is a worm on the friend's computer harvesting contact book addresses and spamming.

Easiest way to verify the e-mail is genuine is to reply and ask "Did you send this to me?"

I would suggest forwarding it to her as opposed to replying but in situations like this you also might not know if someone has hacked the email account. An alternate means of contact would be best if possible.
