Have a "fat" PS3? Don't get on PSN, unless you like corrupted data!

http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/01/sony-dont-turn-on-your-ps3-until-psn-bug-is-fixed/

So far, reports say that if you log onto PSN on a fat PS3 (as of sometime last night), it will corrupt data on your system/profile, mess up games (Heavy Rain will actually refuse to play even offline afterwards), etc. This is turning into a major disaster for Sony.

I actually used mine and nothing happened :/, even with Trophy enabled games. I did get an error that I couldn't log into PSN though. Sucks for those with Heavy Rain right now!

Yeah, damage is random, and it looks like they might have kept it from corrupting if you log in now, but it's still messing up badly (including resetting the clock).

And just this weekend I was chatting with a friend about how I admired the PS3 for being so stable as opposed to the 360 and the Red Ring of Death. Heh.

I was playing Heavy Rain yesterday and then watched a blu-ray afterwards. At some point I noticed an error about losing the connection to PSN. Shut it off after the movie though and haven't turned it on since.

what realy gets me is that sony of america have been very quiet on this issue, as if they are trying to see if it fixes itself so they can say that they fixed it.

This argument is dead, RRoD isn't even an issue anymore

Dead now, but historically still valid and I'm sure still plays a part in some small margin of users choice on what console they want.

It still seems like 360s die more often than PS3s. I still know people who get RRoDs from their consoles they've had for the end of 3 years running now when a lot of those were still in inventory (like mine). If holding all things constant except for breakage rate, I'd probably choose the PS3 over the 360.

I was thinking about selling my fat (non-ps2 b/c) PS3 over here in the UK for some pounds, maybe convert em back to dollars and buy a slim. I figure there's no point in having a fat PS3 that doesn't play PS2 if I could get the Slim for little to no dollars.

Both of them can break, I've seen the DVD drives go out on more XBox's than RRoD, and I've seen more Blurays die than RRoDs. At least the XBox has a 3 year warranty. Of course if you have a 3-4 year old XBox your chances of getting RRoD are higher. But if you just bought one, don't worry about it.

My only console to ever break was my PS2... Well, and my old NES barely works now...

And there's an extra year's free warranty specifically for RRoDs, I think. If you're outside of the warranty, you can actually still sell it to some people (though probably not for much). There do exist people that buy RRoD'd 360s, though I have no idea for what purpose. Maybe they make for nice hats.

Also, Microsoft are actually remarkably good at responding and fixing RRoDs, the customer service is fantastic. Sort of a mute point, though, as it really shouldn't be this likely to break in the first place. The failure rate of early 360s is ****ing ridiculous (the actual figures seem to vary from 20% to 60%, but even 20% is incredibly high).

Haha, actually if you look on craigslist people claim to be able to fix RRoD for like $30-40, so I imagine that they will buy the "hat" and fix and re-sell it :P

I read on consumerist that they are no longer providing boxes + shipping service to send in broken xboxes, is this true? If so, I don't think that would count as fantastic.
2010-03-01, 5:51 PM #21
they still cover the shipping but what i'm reading is they no longer ship out the boxes

no problem for me as i kept my coffin from when they fixed my RRoD just in case it happens again

but there's that problem of MS being able to easily say "you didn't pack this well enough" and deny you the repair if you happen to not have one of those boxes with the nice packing materials they used to send out handy

Reportedly the issue is now "resolved", although no word from Sony on how or why. It's highly likely that due to the fact this was a date issue, that the time has simply ticked past the trouble area in the system's code. And it's unknown if any corrupt data will have a lasting effect.

If you want a joke, look at Sony's attempts to crush homebrew on the PSP.. I remember when they "patched" the GTA glitch, but they somehow messed it up and the same homebrew enabler was released again for a later firmware.

Edit: this reminds me of the infamous Zune glitch from last year, too

It reminds you of it because it's actually the exact same issue. The ARM chip responsible for the Zune leap year issue is the same one responsible for the leap year issue in these PS3s. Whoever developed that chip should be shot.
