You awaken on a Mysterious island...

You awaken on a mysterious island. You have no idea where you are, or how you arrived here, except that a book with a magical moving image seemed to take you here.

With no information and no clues, your only option is to explore. What do you do?

[Yay another forum game. Myst co-op! Each reply can be one "move". I will navigate in such a way that I will progress until I reach points of interest or a split path. If you already know how to beat the game, I suggest playing along by visiting the Ages first. If this somehow takes off and I get a lot of responses, I'll do Riven next, which I'm sure very few of you know how to beat :P

Oh, and if multiple people reply, I will take the first sane move posted. Just tell me where to go or what to interact with in the image. I will not engage anything that cannot be seen in the image, that's cheating! I will try to take people who have not gone previously over repeat posters, so don't be afraid to post if someone beat you.]

Click randomly all over until something happens.

But really, I think you should check out that square box thing ahead of you.

I remember wondering how graphics could possibly get any better than Myst, ever.

Now they're about 800 times better, and in real-time.

You arrive at the box, and some stairs. Do you flip the switch? And once you climb the stairs, do you go right, towards the gears, or to the left?

Flip all the switches on the island up, and then flip this one back down

Nah that's a crazy idea, never mind. >_>

This game is boring.

turn around, open the door on the right - on the side of the hill. go in. go down the stairs. turn around until you see the control panel on the wall. press the button to open it. record a video of you manually and sequentially inputting all possible numbers in the control panel.

then end your life in a manner that is entertaining enough to make up for creating a myst interactive forum game. this will probably have to involve space robots.

I was tempted to post a youtube video of a Myst speedrun just to kill this, but had a last second change of heart. Best of Luck.

I was thinking you should play Zork or Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, atleast then you wouldnt have to upload pictures.

if you only follow the first half of my post, you should then repeat the process with the dates in the observatory.

if you followed the second half... nevermind.

Logic would state if you think this game is boring/stupid of an idea, that not posting would be the obvious choice to ending it, as then the thread would disappear. But nope, keep bumping it!
2010-03-05, 8:05 PM #13
(I only meant that it was boring in the sense that nothing was happening. I've been dying to see what the switch does for like two hours.)

I agree that Myst has not aged well. I enjoyed Riven though, but I don't think I can stomach slideshow gameplay in this day and age.

Does the company behind Myst and Riven even exist anymore?

Yes.

Riven aged a lot better, in that it still looks better than many games today (except a few places up close where the lower res textures used in rendering become apparent). It used a lot more movies as well, which was nice.

Each subsequent Myst game after Riven wasn't as good, but did offer more "freedom" in navigation. Myst III allowed you to look in any direction, and Myst 4 or 5 allowed to complete 3D movement I believe. realMyst also took the original and did that as well.

They also created Uru Live, which was an MMO Myst, basically. Huge, of course, with tons of areas, but played out like Myst. It's still around, and in fact just got a new lease on life recently. GOG sells it. They open sourced the server and data, so people can make their own servers, or ages in it. It's pretty cool looking.

I find, on the whole, that the "Old School" CG like that creeps the hell out of me.
It's just so surreal.

MMO Myst? I don't understand.
2010-03-05, 9:04 PM #18
Oh, and BTW: the Myst books are actually really good.
2010-03-05, 9:06 PM #19
The idea is there are "neighborhood" ages (they would work like MMO servers I guess) where you can interact with other people, and then go together using linking books to various ages.

In the retail release after it was initially shut down, it was retooled into a SP expansion. The "neighborhood" is huge and empty, though there are a few things for you to do and you get to do the "online" ages by yourself.

I'm guessing with the launch there are new online ages (I heard there was coop interactions required to solve some puzzles).

Neither did anyone else.

The bonus hidden age in RealMYST had a crystal viewer, where you could use different combinations of crystals to view procedurally generated worlds. Considering the game is literally about people who can travel to other worlds by describing them in a book, I think it was fairly silly for them to make a Myst MMORPG before the technology existed to implement such a fundamental aspect of the world.

It'd be like an Asheron's Call game without magic, or an EverQuest without elves.

Seconding this.

D'ni language can also be fun. I don't know of any other game series that have an artificial language.

so are we flipping this switch or what
COUCHMAN IS BACK BABY
2010-03-05, 11:08 PM #24
apparently not.

We could always do a Nancy Drew forum co-op. They have a bunch of demos on Steam. They're a bit like Myst.

You flipped the switch, but nothing of interest happened. You continue on the stairway up, where you are presented with the option of going left or right. Which do you choose?

Yep, I had all 3 of them. The second one, which was more of a prequel to the others, was the most interesting, as it really gave a detailed look into the D'ni society, and how linking books were more than just adventures for them, but a way of life. It's how they obtained materials, food, etc.

You stumble upon a letter on the ground. You read it, and then stuff it in your pocket.

Up ahead, you have the choice of going straight, or right, into the building. Where do you go?
